Wissett Cottage is the quintessential, traditional Dorset stone cottage. Steeped in period character such as exposed stonework, ancient timbers and a partly thatched roof, this 300 year old cottage provides a cosy and welcoming 'home away from home' that combines rustic charm with comfortable furnishings and modern day conveniences.

Lying within an 'arrow's flight' of the historic ruins of Corfe Castle, Wissett Cottage is conveniently situated close to all village amenities such as the bakery and excellent local pubs. A short, 5 minute stroll will take you to Corfe Castle station from where you can board one of the vintage steam trains operating on the famous Swanage Steam Railway. The village nestles in the heart of the magnificent Isle of Purbeck and lies close to many areas of outstanding natural beauty. With nearby coastline forming the eastern end of the renowned World Heritage Site, The Jurassic Coast, the area provides a diverse range of scenery and attractions such as pristine sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs, quaint villages and pleasant seaside resorts which will appeal to all ages and interests.

On the ground floor of Wissett Cottage you will find a bright, spacious living room equipped with woodburner, tv (freesat) and blu-ray player. With comfortable sofas seating up to 8 people, there is plenty of room to relax after the day's activities and logs for your first fire will be provided during the winter months. Meanwhile the stunning dining room, with its double height ceiling and original (ornamental) inglenook fireplace, boasts a large refectory table seating up to eight people. The kitchen is fully equipped for all of your culinary needs; appliances include electric oven, gas hob, dishwasher, microwave,fridge/freezer and washing machine. Upstairs you will find a modern bathroom (bath with pressurised shower attachment, basin, toilet), separate WC and two homely bedrooms (Bed 1 - king-sized double, tv; Bed 2 - standard double and 3ft single) from which you can glimpse views of the nearby Purbeck Hills. All bed linen is provided and you will find the beds made up, ready for you on arrival. A sofa bed in the living room provides additional accommodation by prior arrangement only. Children are very welcome at Wissett Cottage; a travel cot (please bring your own cot bedding), high chair and stroller buggy (suitable from 6 months) are available for our smaller guests.

The entrance and south-facing aspect of the cottage is framed by attractive neighbouring gardens and is approached by a shared driveway which provides parking for one vehicle. A detached garage provides additional parking as well as lockable storage for bikes, canoes or surfboards. To the rear, there is a pretty, private, walled courtyard with patio furniture for 'al fresco' dining in the summer months.

Please note:

Bookings are usually for a minimum of 7 nights and run from Saturday to Saturday. Last minute, short break bookings are occasionally available - please inquire for further details.

A strict 'No Smoking' policy operates for guests staying at the property and regrettably, due to fire hazard presented by the thatch, barbeques are not permitted.

The West Country region

The county of Dorset boasts diverse and intriguing natural and cultural histories dating back to prehistoric times. Whilst evidence of the dinosaurs who roamed subtropical forests abound in the county's geology might be attractive to modern day fossil hunters, others may romance in the delights of 'Hardy Country', exploring the beautiful landscapes portrayed in many of the author's classic novels. For some, the allure of the millionaire lifestyles enjoyed by the inhabitants of Sandbanks might call, or perhaps, the simpler pleasures held by the region's many sandy beaches are more appealing.

The major towns of Poole, Bournemouth, Dorchester and Weymouth provide a host of amenities and opportunities for leisure activities whilst quieter resorts and towns such as Swanage, Lyme Regis, Shafetesbury, Wareham and Bridport all offer their own particular charms to those who wish to explore.

With its coastline having been designated a World Heritage site, The Jurassic Coast fringes many areas of outstanding natural beauty, each with its own character and notoriety. From low-lying heathland to dramatic cliffs and pristine, sandy beaches, the scenery changes endlessly to nurture a wealth of flora and fauna, enchanting and inspire its visitors to return time and time again.

Corfe Castle

The Isle of Purbeck is a part of Dorset which roughly encompasses the area east of Lulworth Cove to Shell Bay, at the mouth of Poole harbour, to the small market town of Wareham at the northern reaches of Poole harbour. The beauty of this world-renowned coast line is unsurpassed and vistors who venture a short distance inland will be enthralled by what the Isle of Purbeck has to offer them. Dominated by the majestic Purbeck Hills, its gently rolling landscape has provided shelter and sustenance for mankind over thousands of years. Today, this beautiful area is dotted with quaint villages comprising cottages built from the locally quarried Purbeck limestone, giving them their unique character and charm.

The village of Corfe Castle, named after the ruined fortress which stands proud at its gateway is the largest and most populous of these such settlements. Within its bounds, you will find four traditional English pubs, a superb bakery, a delicatessen/general store and a post office. The Swanage Steam Railway operates from the station within the village and, of course, the castle itself is a fantastic visitor attraction. Walkers and cyclists alike will rejoice in the ready accessibility from the village of numerous routes into the picturesque hills and vales. The traditional sea-side resort of Swanage with its variety of amenities is a short 5 mile ride away. The scope for nature lovers to indulge their interest is endless, whether it be: dolphin watching from the cliffs of Durlston Country Park; watching the migrations of bird life at Poole harbour; surveying the landscape for mammals such as Sika deer or, indeed, reptilian life which is indigenous to the area's heathlands. All in all, the Isle of Purbeck offers something for everyone.

"Perfect Family Holiday Cottage"

Our family LOVED staying at Wissett Cottage. Due to the high standard of "home comforts" provided, all of us (1 x Granny, 2 x 34 year olds, 1 x 3 year old and 1 x 5 year old) had a thoroughly relaxing and stress free holiday. The beds were very comfortable, the kitchen well equipped and the icing on the cake was the stunning views of Corfe Castle.

We used the bus stop right outside the cottage to travel around and with the aid of the buggy provided by the cottage, explored the local area easily.

We cannot wait to stay again - mainly due the positioning and Wissett being so family friendly and welcoming.

"Beautiful cottage in great location"

Three generations of us stayed at Wissett Cottage and we all loved it. It's a beautiful character cottage, spacious, tastefully furnished and very comfortable. It has a well equipped kitchen for us to cook our own meals but is close to pubs and restaurants for eating out. The owners have taken a lot of care to provide information and tips about the area. For a cottage the stairs are quite wide, which meant that my 83-year old mum could cope easily with them. Its central location in Corfe Castle is ideal for exploring this beautiful part of the country.

"Beautiful cottage in perfect location"

This was our second stay at Wissett Cottage, this time with a toddler, a young baby and a Granny in tow. Both times we found the property spacious, yet cosy in the colder evenings. The kitchen was modern and well stocked with every utensil we could possibly have needed. The rest of the house retains its period features but with subtle modernisation to provide all the necessary 'creature comforts.'
The setting is simply perfect - within short walking distance of the centre of Corfe Castle where a couple of shops provide the essentials (and more), a few pubs and gift shops and the National Trust shop. The view of the castle itself from outside the cottage is quite breath-taking.
We spent most days in Swanage where we had family staying - only a 10 minute car drive away. I think we could have easily caught the bus - there's a fairly regular service from Corfe.
All in all, this was a great location and property for a family holiday - whether we wanted to stay in and make use of the TV/board games, or go out and about to explore the local area.
