The Sicily region
Sicily's climate is so mild that it is possible to bathe from spring to autumn. Perhaps no other European landscape is as varied and colorful and its luxuriant vegetation is reminiscent of north Africa: all species of palm trees, cycads, bougainvillea, cacti, aloes, jasmine, geraniums, etc. There are many places which are really worth visiting and spending time: Cefalu, Taormina and Mount Etna Europe's highest and most active volcano (3,323 meters) near Catania in the north east of the island, the majestic monuments in the Valle dei Templi (Valley of the Temples) of Agrigento, the beautiful Trapani area and Erice.
The coasts offer a landscape of fascinating beauty almost everywhere. There are hundreds of beautiful beaches, most famous are: Cefalu, San Vito lo Capo, Scopello, Taormina, Trapani, Pachino, Pozzallo, Marina di Modica and groups of marvellous smaller islands are scattered round the coast: the Aeolian Islands, the Egadi islands, the isle of Pantelleria and the Pelagie...
The west side of the island has beautiful scenery namely the Zingaro Nature Reserve (in the Province of Trapani), The Riserva dello Zingaro (1600 hectares of Mediterranean vegetation), palms, agaves, and 40 different types of birds, the stacks (the clipps) and tuna fish in Scopello (place tuna) with its fine Norman tower A pearl, a melting pot of civilizations of the past, the centre of the Mediterranean Sea. Palermo has been for centuries the capital of maritime trade and port for the peoples of the lands bordering the "Mare Nostrum". Conquered the Phoenicians, was the principal city of Magna Grecia, Roman colony, Arabs and Normans and Spaniards, and the Angevin and the Swabians.
All in Palermo exudes richness of cultures, red-domed churches, from San Giovanni Martorana hermits, display the manufacture of the peoples of the East, the market is increasing the historic charm of Arabia, the architecture of the centre tells the influences of different people, all equally fascinated by the city "all doors" (Panormus).
And those who have reached the sea and those who were to enjoy the mountains, enjoying the sparkling view of the Conca d'Oro, the valley planted with citrus groves that, illuminated by the sun, shining like the most precious metal. Sicily and Palermo as its capital, evokes the purity of flavours, the abundance of fruits of a rich and kissed by the sun for most of the year.
All that Palermo has its characteristic strong and ingrained. Customs of its inhabitants, dialect as influenced by Arabic and Spanish to allow Palermo to feel more like the peoples of East and some of his compatriots and foreigners to understand what is good, with some even speak their language. Palermo is famous for its mild climate, but also the pleasures of the palate. And, if you stand out among the cakes and cannoli quashed, where the queen is the ricotta, part of the "salt", which has roots in Palermo doc genuine traditions of behaviour. Take for example the bread cha meus ", ie the sandwich-pie stuffed with bovine spleen. A speciality of which are related to the rites and customs, as well as bread and cake with a sandwich, or so-called "stigghioa 'entrails of lamb roast or grilled meats, often on street corners. Not to mention the arancine: a speciality. Of course, to reel off the culinary tradition of Palermo there are not enough books.
Ecstatic to leave the visitors, help with art nouveau buildings, monuments, mansions, theatres. Teatro Massimo, the second in Europe after the Paris Opera, has returned to its former glory in 1997, after years of inactivity.
