The Rhone / French Alps / Haute-Savoie region

Chamonix is at the heart of Western Europe in the french Alps, very close to Mt. Dolent where the french, swiss and italian borders meet.

Chamonix is probably best known as the skiing and alpine capital of the world. As a destination it has a reputation for the extreme and this, whilst undoubtedly true, can mask a wide array of sporting and leisure activities (particularly in summer), peace and quiet, great nightlife, and superb scenery that can be enjoyed at whichever pace suits you. Chamonix is the perfect place to come for a week's holiday, a season, or a lifetime, as you will never run out of things to do or tire of the views!

The lively streets of Chamonix are a colourful mix of sport shops, guide offices, restaurants, bars and cafés. Every Saturday the town hosts an outdoor market brimming with local crafts and produce. On bad weather days there is a cinema, a bowling alley, an ice rink, a large sports centre with a pool, gym and indoor climbing wall and numerous museums in which to while away the day.

Chamonix / Les Houches area

Chalet Narnia is located in the very pretty and typically alpine village of Vaudagne. Les Houches is nearby and chamonix only a quick drive down the motorway.

Situated in the Haute-Savoie region of France, Chamonix is bordered by Switzerland and Italy and dominated by the incredible Aiguilles de Chamonix mountain chain which peaks at the top of Mont Blanc (4810m) - the highest in Western Europe. The local population of Chamonix numbers around 10 000 inhabitants but this figure swells to nearly ten times that with the influx of tourists, climbers, alpinists, backpackers, students and seasonnaires. There are two distinct seasons here: summer and winter, but the area is busy for most of the year with different activities at the fore-front of people's minds.

Whilst the principal town is of the same name, 'Chamonix' is often used in reference to the whole valley, stretching over 28km from Le Fayet to Switzerland. It is, however, made up of several distinct and charming villages including Servoz, Les Houches, Les Bossons, Les Praz, Les Tines, Argentiere, Montroc, and at the top of the valley: Le Tour.

How to get there

1 hour drive from Geneva airport (Easyjet, BMI Baby BA etc) or 2 hours from Lyon.

Also possible to drive from Italy through Mont Blanc Tunnel.

Further details indoors:
The chalet is located in a very peaceful and beautiful part of the chamonix valley with amazing views down the valley to Servoz and to the right the Mont Blanc Range. It is only 5 minutes drive to the ski lifts in Les Houches or a little further down to Chamonix. There are several good restaurants and bars such as Le Delice nearby in Les Houches and the views from the chalet at night are fantastic looking down on the lights in the valley.

In winter the whole area is covered in snow and really is a beautiful alpine spectacle. In summer it is a fantastic spot to start the many walking trails over the mountains towards St Gervais and along to Chamonix. The chalet has a large garden all around it with a stream at the back a bbq and loungers. Surrounding the chalet are meadows covered in snow in winter and in summer you can spot deer, badgers, marmotte and birds as well as the many varieties of Alpine flowers.
