Campofelice di Roccella

The small town Cefalù is located 70km east of Palermo and is really worth a visit! Cefalù is a picturesque fishing village that enjoys a splendid position between the sea and a rocky promontory. The town’s current name derives from the Greek word Kephaloidion, meaning head or chief, and the town saw its heyday under the Norman king Roger II, who decided to initiate the work on the cathedral in 1131. The town is divided in two parts; an old part that is mainly for pedestrians and has many nice little boutiques, and a new modern part with supermarkets, gas stations and car rentals. Corso Ruggero is the main street in the old town centre, and it has many different shops and in cross-streets you will find many good restaurants. The old town centre is dominated by the cathedral and the Rock rising in the background. The town’s history is chequered; many different kinds of people have governed it, for example the Arabs, the Greeks and the Normans. The historical heritage is reflected in architecture, location and the atmosphere. Today Cefalù has a population of 14,000, but in the summer months this number is more than doubled. Cefalù has become incredibly popular in recent years; the town is fascinating and many tourists that come here choose to come back.

We stayed here for 8 (very hot) days. Salvatore and Ensa met us as arranged at a nearby location. They were both very welcoming and friendly and despite our lack of Italian and their lack of English we managed to converse rather well using our son's poor French and our daughter's slightly better Spanish. Salvatore was very patient. They showed us all around the villa and explained everything and even helped us out with water. They were very helpful in suggesting where to shop and also recommending a local restaurant. The villa was spotlessly clean and well equipped. We particularly enjoyed using the outdoor kitchen area with BBQ. The outdoor shower was very well used at all times of the day. The location is excellent in a gated residential area so very private with easy access (100m) to the beach which has coarse sand. It was nice to be away form the rows of sunbeds and parasols. Salvatore arranged for us to have passes to use the swimming pool in the next community but we swam in the sea every day. When we had a minor problem with the a/c and toilet Salvatore arrived to sort them out within 30 mins of our text. Nothing was too much trouble. A car is essential but there are several supermarkets within a short drive giving plenty of options for self-catering. Campofelice di Rocella town is beautiful with two amazing gelateria. Cefalu is also very easy to access. The town of Castelbuono is about an hours drive but worth the trip. We decided to go on the spur of the moment but happened to choose the night when the whole town were out to celebrate a religious festival. We also travelled through the mountains to Taormina, (about 4 hours), a place that had been recommended to us for our holiday. We were all really glad we weren't staying there and only stayed for a couple of hours before returning to the peace and tranquility of Campolfelice this time using the easily accessed Autostrada. All in all a fantastic villa in a great location with superb hosts if you like to be immersed in the true Italian culture. We didn't meet any other tourists during our stay which is just how we like it.
