The West Country region
If you're after clear air, sweeping cliff walks, breathtaking views, traditional villages and vibrant market towns brimming with restaurants and shops to explore, Dorset is for you!
Dorset's 25 mile coastline forms part of the Jurassic Coast, a stunning stretch of 200 million-year-old shoreline that has been designated a Natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO due to its outstanding geological make-up. The beaches around Lyme Regis, Charmouth and Seatown are a magnet for fossil hunters. At Charmouth you will find a Heritage Coast Centre where you can join an organised fossil hunt.
West Dorset is renowned for its good food and is home to Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall's River Cottage and Canteen at Axminster, Mark Hix's Oyster and Fish House at Lyme Regis, Mat Follas's Wild Garlic Restaurant at Beaminster, Hive Beach Cafe at Burton Bradstock and the Riverside Fish Restaurant at West Bay, all within a half hours drive from Cedar Cotttage.
West Dorset offers many attractions all year round, hosting a Jazz Festival in Lyme Regis during May, Dorset Art weeks during May and June, and Carnival Week in Lyme Regis during Augsut. Places worth visiting further afield include Abbotsbury Swannery and Gardens, Corfe Castle, Monkey World and the beach at Weymouth.
The charming countryside Dorset has to offer has been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and it's easy to see why - take some time to discover this beautiful county at your own pace.
Situated in one of the most picturesque valleys in this part of the county, and spelled as Chideock in the Doomsday Book, Chideock is only a stone's throw from Bridport (and West Bay) to the east and Charmouth to the west, both of which are outstanding holiday destinations in their own right. Chideock has it's own holiday access to the Jurassic Coast via Seatown, and is just two miles from the famous Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast which has breathtaking views. Chideock had two pubs, the George and the Clock.
The vibrant market town of Bridport is two miles away and has much to offer in entertainment with the Electric Palace Cinema staging live music, comedy and theatre plus films, the Arts Centre with regular exhibitons, live music, host to the Curzon cinema and other events, plus the recently opened Lyric Theatre.
Bridport has a market every Saturday and Wednesday, a Country Market every Saturday and a Farmer's Market on the second Saturday of every month selling a variety of organic and local produce.
The Vintage Quarter is also expanding, situated within the Old Rope Yards of St Michael's it has artist studios, vintage shops and an antiques centre, open Tuesdays, Wednesday and Saturdays.
Bridport still has independent shops including Bridport Records and Leakers, the Bakers, as well as Waitrose and Morrisons, galleries, a museum, a libray and a good variety of restaurants and cafes.
In August Bridport holds a Carnival and in June is hosts a Food Festival and in November a Literary Festival.
