The Campania region
Campania is a region in southern Italy. The region has a population of around 5.8 million people, making it the second-most-populous region of Italy; its total area of 13,590 km² makes it the most densely populated region in the country.
Located on the Italian Peninsula, with the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west, it includes the small Flegrean Islands and Capri for administration as part of the region.
Throughout much of its history Campania has been at the centre of Western civilisation's most significant entities. The area was colonised by Ancient Greeks and was within Magna Græcia, until the Roman Republic began to dominate. During the Roman era the area was highly respected as a place of culture by the emperors, where it balanced Greco-Roman culture. The area had many duchies and principalities during the Middle Ages, in the hands of the Byzantine Empire and some Lombards.
It was under the Normans that the smaller independent states were brought together as part of a sizable European kingdom, known as the Kingdom of Sicily, before the mainland broke away to form the Kingdom of Naples. It was during this period that especially elements of Spanish, French and Aragonese culture touched Campania.
Later the area became the central part of the Two Sicilies under the Bourbons, until the Italian unification of 1860 when it became part of the new state Italy.
The capital city of Campania is Naples. Campania is rich in culture, especially in regards to gastronomy, music, architecture, archeological and ancient sites such as Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestum. The name of Campania itself is derived from Latin, as the Romans knew the region as Campania felix, which translates into English as "fertile countryside".
The rich natural sights of Campania make it highly important in the tourism industry, especially along the Amalfi Coast, Mount Vesuvius and the island of Capri.
The Amalfi Coast / Furore area
The Amalfi Coast (Italian: Costiera Amalfitana) is a stretch of coastline on the southern coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula in the Province of Salerno in Southern Italy. The Amalfi Coast is a popular tourist destination for the region and Italy as a whole, attracting thousands of tourists annually.
During the 10th-11th centuries, the Duchy of Amalfi existed on the territory of the Amalfi Coast, centered in the town of Amalfi, until it was sacked by the Republic of Pisa in 1137. In 1997, the Amalfi Coast was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a cultural landscape.

This property has some wonderful features and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The furnishing and decor are in good condition and on the whole the property was very clean. I loved the layout with the lounge and open plan area in the middle and the two bedrooms at either end. It felt spacious and light. The terrace was a real bonus and with sunny weather we spent a lot of time either in the morning or early evening enjoying relaxing in the sun. The photo's don't do enough justice as the lounge is presented as cramped and tiny. This was because the rather large sofas are pushed right together and we spread them out a bit and created a lovely large living area. The negative points I have are that the bathrooms had not had the time spent on keeping them up to high standards of cleanliness. The toilets were stained and I spent two days cleaning them. so lucky next people! We also felt that a little bit of mis-representation had been given. The parking space was the roadside - very narrow with a fair amount of passing traffic. We had to park the hire car right up to the wall and put the wing mirrors in. All normal in this area but a bit annoying that the owners parked their car off road in the parking space. We never found a safe or a DVD player not that we wanted one! The owners were very helpful and lovely. They provided us with some more hangers and even bought us some beach towels as we asked if we could borrow some. I didn't like the way the owner came in and kept closing the shutters while we were out but I'm sure that was her way of trying to be helpful. We were given fresh towels half way through the week and the bins were emptied. It was quite a journey to Amalfie everyday taking about 20mins down the windy narrow road but we got used to it and eventually started to use the boats more to get along the coast line. We had a wonderful time here and although there were some small niggles I would thoroughly reccommend staying here. You do feel like you are in the Italian village setting with the church bells and the lovely lemon groves around. |
