The Andalucia / Malaga Province region

Álora is 40 km inland from the Costa del Sol near the famous climbing area of El Chorro at the head of the Guadalhorce Valley famous for citrus fruit growing. Famous for the warm sunny climate, the Arabic architecture and food, the moorish influences of the old towns, and the gentleness and welcoming nature of the Andalucian people, this is a wonderful place to visit and has something for everyone.
Transport via road or rail is excellent, and access to cities, sporting activities and wonderful beaches is really good. Malaga is underrated and the old town is well worth a visit - not only to see the Picasso Museum. The shopping is good too! Recommendations for day trips - Cordoba by train, Gibraltar by car, Nerja/Maro by car (just over an hour)
The Alora area
Álora is a traditional white hill town with winding streets, and lots of small shops, restaurants and bars. Just 12 km from the town is El Chorro with world class climbing attracting the best climbers. The Ardales Lakes are just a short drive through the national park - wonderful for swimming, hiking, cycling, and gentle walks. This is a beautiful area year round.
Andalucia is renowned for its Ferias, its festivals and holidays. Here we have a feria in July when everyone enjoys the holiday atmosphere, enjoys the dancing and singing with flamenco of course being the star performer. The nearby areas and villages all have their own ferias too, so there is plenty of enjoyment to be had. However, all year round there are excellent restaurants, many having large covered terraces for shady summer eating. In winter we celebrate the day of the kings on the 6th January, and we have holidays for 'Andalucia Day' and various saints days throughout the year. Any excuse really to get together with friends, relax and eat together and generally have fun.

We enjoyed a super week in Casa Los Olivos and didn't want to leave. The house is very clean, comfortable and very well equipped with a private garden and a lovely pool. It is such a relaxing place and Helen and Alan are superb hosts - very friendly and helpful but never intrusive. It is a lovely area of Spain with splendid lakes and mountains and thankfully very Spanish and not touristy. Alora is a nice town with everything you could need including an excellent train service into Malaga which proved to be an interesting city to explore. We very much hope that we can make a return holiday in 2012. |

My husband and I stayed at Casa Los Olivos back in June. We had such a lovely stay. The hosts were very friendly and gave us some great recommendations for nearby places to visit. The self catering accommodation was very comfortable and spacious but we spent most of the time lying around by the pool and having table tennis championships. Perfect! |

As parents of two young children the words 'family' and 'holiday' haven't exactly gelled in the past - but this was a really lovely, relaxing 'family holiday'. The accommodation is spotless and very well appointed - we didn't have to lug travel cot or car seats with us as they were provided - and having 2 bathrooms in the cottage was great. The location is beautiful with views of the mountains and the church in Allora. A safe pool (well fenced in and locked when not in use) meant we could let the kids run around the garden without worrying. Enjoyed the outdoor table tennis and the many comfy places around the villa to enjoy that sundown G&T. We went into Allora (which feels Spanish rather than touristy) a couple of times to eat and thanks to the hosts recommendations had excellent meals. The hosts are very welcoming and helpful (and were good at only being around when we needed them!) - they even babysat for us one evening giving us the chance for a grown up night out. The kids loved the wolf sanctury and the beach is a short car ride away. Would recommend - we will be back! |
