At Villa Leopoldo C you will have a double bedroom, a bathroom, and a large living-room with a fireplace and a kitchenette. The place You will be guests in a small medieval castle in stone on the top of a verdant hill on the outskirts of a small and gracious hamlet, called Montisi . You will be in a region of Tuscany which lies south of Siena and which is called ‘Le Crete Senesi’, a territory which has been preserved and protected due to its environmental, historical and artistic beauty. You will have the most loved landscape of Tuscany around you: one of sweet and green hills whose tops are adorned by lines of cypress trees and also medieval villages set around towered castles. You will be in a region where the most famous wine in the world is produced: the ‘Brunello di Montalcino ’. You will be able to visit the numerous farms which produce wine and taste extraordinary wines as well. The town of Montalcino is only 27 km (about 16.8 miles) away. In the hamlet of Montisi, just a few steps away from the house, you will have a restaurant and small food shops. Its history You will live your vacation in a fort whose origins date back to the fourteenth century, when the Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala of Siena, owner of the surrounding lands, built it as a administrative place and a fortified warehouse to the products of the local terrain. The castle kept its same functions throughout centuries to come with different administrators until the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo, in 1775, decided to sell the fort and its lands. The castle and part of the lands were bought by people who are actually ancestors of the current proprietors. Therefore, the same family has maintained this castle through centuries, cultivating it with love to its traditions. Nowadays, the agricultural farm linked to the castle produces wine, oil, and vin santo: products that you can taste in loco! The shared gardens and swimming pool As guests of Villa Leopoldo C you will have a 11x7 meter (about 36 x 22 feet) swimming-pool available. It’s located in a large garden. The swimming pool is in a panoramic position, allowing you to have a view of the below valley even from inside the water. The sun-drenched area around is furnished with umbrellas, deck chairs, and sunloungers. You can even sit under a gracious portico covered with roof tiles to relax in the shade and enjoy and scenery consisting of the valley. The swimming pool is available from half April to half October. Not far from the swimming pool, you will have a barbecue area, with a barbecue in stone. And also under a pergola, you will have wooden tables and benches. In this area you will also find a large patio sustained by stone arches, with a ping-pong table and bikes available free of charge to all guests. Another old garden, shaded by two high Lebanon cedars, is located along the old surrounding walls of the castle. From here you will have a wide and endless view of the sea of hills below. You will be able to relax in the shades of trees in perfect peacefulness, enjoying even two large stone tables amidst the perfume of lemon trees planted in large terracotta vases. From this garden you can reach the living-room available to all the guests of the castle. The room features a vault ceiling in bricks and is furnished in a simple and rustic way, with tables and chairs, a wicker furniture area, bottles of wine on shelves on the wall, and old countryside objects. A nice and characteristic place which is perfect to be enjoyed with friends! The house Villa Leopoldo C is a large apartment, and all its rooms feature a wonderful view of the valley. You step into the apartment from the inside courtyard of the castle. You will enter a living-room with a romantic balcony overlooking the garden and the valley. Near the balcony you will have a couch and two armchairs. In the living-room there is a kitchenette with a four-burner stove, a small oven, and a fridge. The double bedroom is large, and it features an elegant painted ceiling. The bathroom inside the room has a shower. Nearby tourist attractions Every year, on the first Sunday of August, the castle where you will stay hosts the beginning of a medieval costume parade whose climax is reached with the celebration of an old medieval competition, so-called ‘Giostra di Simone ’. It is a very interestingly historical revival! Not to be missed! Moreover, in the area, between October and the end of November, there is also the Mostra del Tartufo Bianco (Fest of the White Truffles). From Villa Leopoldo C you can easily plan one-day visits to the most beautiful cities of art in Tuscany. Distances: Siena is 50 km (about 31 miles) away and Florence is 110 km (about 68 miles) away. Villa Leopoldo A is an enthralling 110–square–meter (about 1,184 square feet) apartment which sleeps four people. It features a wide private terrace with a view to a valley and shared swimming pool and garden. The apartment is part of a fascinating historical construction. It features heating and parking space. There is a double bedroom, a twin bedroom, two bathrooms, a living–room with a fireplace, and a kitchen. The place You will be in a small and gracious medieval hamlet consisting of old houses in stone and surrounded by the green of vineyards and olive groves. The hamlet is located on a prominent position on one of the sweet hills which are part of the ‘Crete Senesi ’. All around you is a landscape which is the most loved and typical of Tuscany , reproduced by numerous artists and filled with an atmosphere of peace and tranquility to be experienced by all! You will be in the area where the famous Brunello di Montalcino wine is produced. The little town of Montalcino, with its beautiful cellars where you can taste heavenly wine is only 27 km (about 16.7 miles) away. The beautiful medieval towns of Pienza and Sinalunga are about 15 km (about 9.3 miles) away, Siena is 50 km (about 31 miles) away, and Florence is 110 km (about 68.3 miles) away. In addition, a few feet away from the place, there is a restaurant and some food shops. In Pienza you will have shops open even on Sunday. You will need a car during your stay at Villa Leopoldo A. Its history From the fourteenth century… The apartment is part of a small castle whose origin dates back to the fourteenth century. During that century, the Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala of Siena, owner of the surrounding lands, built the castle as a fort to keep all the products of the place. The warehouses of wheat and oil, along with the main house and the peasant and artisan lodgings, were enclosed within the crenellated walls and protected by a high watch tower and moats filled with water. During centuries the hamlet and the nearby land had belonged to the Hospital of Siena. But then, in 1775, the place was sold by the Grand Duke of Toscana , Pietro Leopoldo, to the ancestors of the current proprietors. Unfortunately the elegant medieval crenellated tower was destroyed and knocked down by the Germans during their withdrawal from the Second World War. …up to today! The castle still preserves its medieval structure on the inside: still intact are the two small courts around which there were the lodgings of the peasants and the shops of the artisans. And you can still visit the main house. On the walls you can still see the old coat of arms of the Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala and of the oligarchs who have succeeded throughout the centuries. Inside the master apartments you will be able to visit the bedroom with the splendid canopy bed where the Grand duke Pietro Leopoldo used to sleep during his visits, the old reception room with its authentic furnishings, the great kitchen, and also a gracious and small eighteenth–century theater. Right outside the walls you will see a perfectly preserved small church where religious ceremonies and weddings can be held. The castle is surrounded by lands from which their proprietors still get wine and olive oil: products that you can purchase at the place along with the fantastic creamy Limoncello, which is produced by the owner with the lemons of the garden. The shared swimming pool and the gardens While at Villa Leopoldo, you will have, along with other guests of the other three small apartments, a large garden and a beautiful 11 x 7 meter (about 36 x 22 feet) swimming pool completely at your disposal. The pool is in a panoramic position, and even from inside the water you will have a wide view of the wavy hills below. Around the swimming pool there are umbrellas, sun loungers, and deck chairs. And next to the pool, you can relax outdoors on a terrace shaded by a cover with roofing tiles. The swimming pool is available from half April to half October. You will be able to organize outdoor barbecues, maybe with the famous Tuscan steak: in the garden, at your disposal, is a barbecue in stone and a pergola under which there are tables and wooden benches. From the garden you can reach a portico under which a ping–pong table and some mountain bikes are placed, all available to every guest. Another wide and fascinating shared garden is placed along the walls of the castle, and it features the shape of a large and long terrace facing the valley below. This garden is shaded by a linden tree and fruit trees, and there are also big vases where lemon trees are cultivated, quite typical of old Tuscan master houses. In the shade of the trees, you will have tables and chairs available. Along with the entrance to this garden, you will notice a spacious common living area. It is an informal and nice room to be enjoyed with somebody else: it features a magnificent vaulted ceiling with bricks, and you will also notice, amidst shelves with bottles of wine and antique objects of the countryside life, a small living–room in wicker furniture, a table, an easel, and a lot of space for you to enjoy your hobbies. The house Villa Leopoldo A has an entrance which is separate from the inside courtyard. In order to step into the apartment, you have to climb a stairway consisting of 15 steps of stone. You will enter a spacious living–room where there is a large fireplace, a couch, armchairs, and a television set. The kitchen communicates with the living– room, and it is quite spacious. Besides the cooking area, there is also a dining table. The kitchen is equipped with a four–burner stove, a small oven, and a fridge. From the living–room you can reach the two beautiful bedrooms, which have windows overlooking the valley. The bedrooms are large and elegantly furnished. Each has its own bathroom with shower. One room is a double bedroom while the other features two single beds. Villa Leopoldo A boasts the fascination of old Tuscan countryside houses: the floor is in terracotta, the ceiling is sustained by wooden joists, and the furniture is in wood and wrought iron from the local handicraft. Furnishings are elegant and well cared for. The private terrace From the living–room of Villa Leopoldo A you can go straight onto your private terrace, about 20 square meters (about 215 square feet) large. From the terrace, your eyes will gaze at a vast horizon of green hills. On the terrace you will have an umbrella and a large table with chairs: the perfect place to enjoy some fresh air from your first cup of coffee in the morning until your evening dinner under the stars! Nearby tourist attractions During your stay at Villa Leopoldo A you will be in a great and convenient position to go on daily visits to places in Tuscany, beginning from Siena (50 km or about 31 miles away), the one hundred castles spread in the Sienese countryside, Florence (110 km or 68 miles away) and all the surroundings. Its history The castle where you will be staying was built in the fourteenth century with the purpose of protecting the goods and the lands of the Hospital della Madonna della Scala of Siena. Throughout the centuries, the castle was controlled by several administrators, each establishing works to the fort and their own coat of arms on the walls, many still seen nowadays. In 1775 the castle and part of the lands were sold by the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo of Tuscany to its last rulers, ancestors of the current proprietors. The castle was surrounded by high walls and ditches, and it also had a watch-tower which was destroyed during the World War II. In its interiors you can see two old courtyards around which there were the shops of artisans. You can even visit the bedroom where the Grand Duke used to sleep, with its magnificent canopy bed and also the small eighteenth-century theater. The shared gardens and swimming pool During your vacation at Villa Leopoldo D you will have two large green areas kept as gardens at your disposal. These are shared with other guests of the castle. In one garden you will have the beautiful swimming-pool, 11 x 7 meters (about 36 x 22 feet) large. On the sun-drenched area around the pool, you will have deck chairs, sunloungers, and umbrellas. The swimming pool is available from half April to half October. A covered loggia with a beautiful view to the valley will offers you some coolness and shade. In this garden there is also a masonry barbecue and a pergola furnished with wooden tables and benches, perfect for outdoor meals. From the garden you can reach a wide portico under which you will have a ping-pong table and some mountain bikes. The second green common area lies along the wall of the castle facing the valley. You will see two high Lebanon Cedars, a pergola of wisteria, and several terracotta vases where lemon trees have been planted. In the shade of the trees there are tables and chairs. From this garden you can step into a rustic room with a vault ceiling in bricks and furnished with wicker armchairs, a table, and objects of the old countryside life, a perfect place to enjoy your hobbies. At Villa Leopoldo B you will have a double bedroom, a spacious living-room with a divan bed, a kitchen, and a bathroom with shower. The place You will be in a fascinating medieval fort of high walls located on the top of a green area. All around you will see the green of vineyards and olive groves. And from above the castle, you will have the view of a hilly landscape of extraordinary beauty. Le Crete Senesi are small hills which succeed as waves in the sea. Millions of years ago, such hills were actually the bottom of the sea. Le Crete Senesi offers a scenery of extraordinary colors: in spring time, under the blue sky, you will see all hues of green shine over fields; in summer, you will see the golden shades of ripe cultivations blossom; and in winter you will feast your eyes on the extraordinary colors of the ploughed land, which change into hues of yellow, red, or white. It was built by the Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala of Siena with the purpose of gathering and keeping products coming from the lands of the region, specially wheat, wine, and olive oil. Several administrators had been called by the Hospital to manage the castle until 1775, when the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Pietro Leopoldo, decided to sell the fort and its lands to people who were actually the ancestors of all the eventual proprietors of the place. And to welcome you as guests will be the direct descendants of such traditional family: they will lead you on a visit to the bedroom reserved to the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo, the living area, the great kitchen with the typical and enormous fireplace, and the small eighteenth-century theatre. They will also let you visit, if you want to, the vineyard. And the owner of the place will offer you some creamy limoncello to be tasted; one that she herself prepares with the lemons of the garden! The castle dates back to the Middle Ages and is located on a street which was once called Via Francigena. The castle also offered hospitality to pilgrims coming from the north of Europe and who would stop in Rome .
