The Messenia Region

Peloponnese (the south edge of mainland Greece) is the geographical department that displays a large number of historical sights, a rich partition of coasts, a hinterland with beautiful nature, villages with a remarkable arcitecture, developed cities and a high touristic infrastructure.

It boasts the largest and most spectacular concentration of ancient sites, including Mycenae, Epidavros, ancient Messini and Olympia, where the Olympic games were founded. Less known but equally fascinating are the many Byzantine (medieval) cities, churches and fortresses, including the hilltown of Mystras and the sea-rock of Monemvasia. The rugged Mani peninsula, central of the three fingers, positively bristles with towers and frescoed chapels. Or, if you fancy something more civilised, check out the elegant seaside town of Nafplion, with its narrow alleys, tiled houses, castles and festivals.

Those who prefer natural wonders to man-made will not be disappointed. The southerly mountain range of Taygetos offers breathtaking gorges, spring flowers and well-maintained mulepaths to link them. Some of Greeces finest beaches can be found on the westren finger around Pilos, or along the endless pine-shaded strand that forms the west coast.

If someone is looking to visit just one part of Greece with a bit of everything, Peloponnese is certainly the place.

Verga Beach

Day trips can easily be arranged to many historical sites - Olympia, Mystras & Monemvasia to name but three. In Kardamili , 25 km (mentioned in Homer's The Iliad) there are numerous tavernas and good tourist shops as well as the site of Ancient Kardimili with a fascinating little museum.
This a popoular area with walkers on waymarked paths all over the Taygetos mountains.
You can also explore (by boat) the famous Diros caves, about 90 minutes driving.

Kalamata (7 km) is a lively, typical mediterranean city. The old town in the north is picturesque, full of cafes, farmer's restaurants and shops selling local products. The centre of the city has prestigious cafes and all kinds of modern shops. The sea front is 2.5 km long pebble beach full of cafes, bars, pizzerias, and night clubs. Walking on the sea front is a pleasure during the evenings. The town has many major super markets with all kind of products.

“Lovely seaside villa in Kalamata, Greece”

Reviewed 27 May 2015

Panos, the owner met us close by to take us to the villa. A lovely, clean villa, well kept inside and outside. Very accomodating to any needs that came up. A beautiful outdoor garden area, with a fabulously large marble table to eat outside and enjoy the seaview. A small store opposite the driveway which was very handy to pick up a few little things as needed. A lovely property to come home to after being out and about and exploring during the day. Definitely recommend to anyone who wants to get away from the toursity areas in Greece, and enjoy and relax by the sea.

“Lovely View of the Med via Fig Tree and Jasmine”

Reviewed 27 May 2015

We had a lovely week, especially sitting at the marble table under the pine and fig trees, looking out at the Sea. Your garden is beautiful. The hammock is wonderful! I only wish we were here when the figs were ready to pick! Your neighbors at the grocery store were quite nice and allowed us to park the behemoth of a van down at the end of their parking stretch -- it was simply too large to easily get in/out of your driveway.

“Eccelente”

Abbiamo trovato pulizia, serietà, buon gusto. La casa era accogliente, comoda e in una meravigliosa posizione. Anche le nostre amiche ne sono rimaste entusiaste. Ci siamo trovati benissimo anche con la gente del posto

“very pleasant, very nice, a little noisy”

Reviewed 24 Oct 2012

We spend one week at Kalamata. The house is close the sea. The garden is also very pleasant, in terms of trees, places of the table under the fig, lights at nights. The house is really well decorated. We bedroom are very confortable, the airconditionned is helpfull in summer ! The only blak point is that the road is close from the house and so, is noisy specially at night. The kichen is a little small if you like cooking. The owners are really nice and hellpfull (they wrote some restaurant we tasted : so good !) We travelled from Kalamata to different historical places with pleasures We enjoyed a lot this place

“Beautiful house, great location, marvelous garden, fabulous sea view”

Reviewed 8 Jan 2012

The house is situated in a huge garden with olive, pine and fig trees, where you can take a rest away from the high temprature. We enjoyed our morning coffees under the shade tree and on the balconies, which had a great view of the sunset. The house itself was beautiful, tastefully decorated, and had all the amenities we needed, while everything was clean and well maintained. It's a good location for travelling to lots of historical places like Sparta or Olympia, as well as for visiting marvelous beaches, mountains and other interesting places. The owners were very kind & hospitable, and welcomed us with great enthusiasm. We spent one of our best holidays there, and we hope to return again!!
