“Excellent apartment”

This is an excellent apartment. Situation if perfect, furnished to a high standard. We prefer self catering as my husband is an excellent cook and likes to cook the local food himself. A bit wary of doing this overseas as not all kitchen equipment lives up to his high standards. This kitchen lacked nothing. The apartment throughout is to a high standard. Bedrooms are roomy, with both rooms opening out onto the living space below (this can be closed off with sliding doors). The handover works smoothly and the owner was available throughout the week and was very friendly and helpful. Valletta is a delight and steeped in history. We stayed for a week and didn't see everything it had to offer. Would recommend this apartment to anyone. Only to be surpassed by the Penthouse which was open during out stay. Would be well worth spending the extra to have the roof terrace and a balcony to sit out during the evening.

We spent a week in Malta for our honeymoon in September 2011, and The Old Mint was the perfect place to be based. Located in Valetta (the capital of Malta), close to restaurants and museums, and a short walk from the bus terminus, where buses can be caught to every other part of Malta (as well as buses connecting to the ferries to Gozo and Comino). The apartment was exactly as advertised, and is a brand new conversion (apparently we were the first to stay in it since it has started being let?). The building had a lobby, then two split level apartments (one each on the 1st and 2nd floor) and then maybe a single level on the 3rd floor? (we didnt explore 3rd floor) The owner arranged our collection from the airport by a private chauffer service (21 euros each way) and then met us at the apartment for check-in. They were polite and friendly, and gave us two sets of keys so that we could go out independantly if we wished. We gave a 150euro security bond for breakages, but got it back at the end with no problems. This apartment was on the 2nd floor, accessible by lift or stairs. The apartment was over two levels. The lower level was an large openplan living/dining/kitchen area, and a bathroom with a toilet, sink, very large power shower cubicle (big enough for 2!), washing machine. Then, up the spiral metal staircase, there were two very large double rooms, and another bathroom, this time with a bathtub and power shower above it, as well as sink and toilet. The whole apartment was in a very modern/minimalistic style. There was also a small balcony (internal facing over the lobby) from the lower floor) which had a clothes horse and was ideal for drying some clothes that we washed. We had the apartment for just the two of us, but with the two big bedrooms and two full bathrooms, this would easily be ideal for two couples travelling together - the rooms were easily both as nice as each other so neither couple would feel like they got a bad deal! Included in our booking fee were all kitchen implements/glassware/crockery etc (very posh kitchen, we only cooked once but were very jealous of the awesome professional knives provided), dishwasher tabs, washing up liquid, teatowels etc, flannels, hand towels, bath towels, beach towels etc, and 5euros per day electricity included (we had the aircon on all night and some parts of the day, and barely used 2euros a day). If you have a smartphone or laptop, you may wish to pay for wifi (5 euros a day) - we did and then used TripAdvisor etc to look for places to eat out each night, as well as stick our holiday photos on Facebook. Pros: *Great location (both for the capital city, and all other parts of Malta) *Very secure building (external door key, number pad to open internal lobby door and then seperate apartment door key) *Very clean, high quality accomodation *Good aircon - essential when its 32c + every day! *Amazing baker that knocks out pizzas for 6-7euros in the basement next door (til 11:30pm) *Very close to the ferry dock with regular (every 15 mins at some times of day) ferries over to Sliema *Much cheaper than the (frankly quite dated, and manky) hotels in the capital Cons (I had to think really hard to think of any!) *Not suitable for disabled/elderly/small children due to metal spiral staircase up to bedroom *Bit of an effort to get large cases up to bedrooms (again that staircase) but my case is pretty big! *Quite a few TV channels but of the ones in English most were news channels. I'd advise to pack a few DVDs (there's a player provided) for any quiet nights in (UK DVDs should work fine as same zone). Finally, a few words about Valetta. I've stayed in Malta before, but in the more "tourist resort" areas. Valetta is a much more pleasant place to stay, and much more convenient for buses going literally anywhere on the island - we went to Marsaxlokk, Sliema, St Juliens, Paceville, Mosta, Mdina/Rabat, Bugibba and Golden Bay, all on direct bus routes (2.60euros for a day bus pass). Two bits of advice though : *Everything in Valetta is either up or down hill, so bring good walking shoes and be prepare to develop calves of steel! *Don't expect nightlife within the capital - one or two cafes are open serving wine until 11:30/12 but after that you are better to head into Paceville (night buses run both ways until 4am ish)
