Location description from owner

The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region

Poitou-Charentes boasts a wealth of unique and beautiful landscapes. The coast is lined with limestone cliffs, pine fringed sandy beaches and coves and the white sands of Ile de Ré. Inland, the canals and waterways of the Marais Poitevin marshes are overhung by willows and poplars, while the vine clad banks of the Charente River are bejewelled with chateaux and castles. Fields of sunflowers bask in the summer sunshine..

The majority of the population reside; in the towns and villages of the Charente River valley between Angoulème and Rochefort; in the cities of Niort and Poitiers to the north of the region and along the coast. The agricultural land in between is rural and sparsely populated, marked by small farms, pastureland and fields of wheat, corn and sunflowers.

Poitiers, the regional capital, is an administrative and commercial centre perched on higher ground that overlooks the Clain and Boivre Rivers. The city's winding streets and boulevards reveal the Gothic Cathedral of Saint-Pierre, Romanesque churches, Roman baths and amphitheatres. Châtellerault, the second largest town of the Poitou-Charentes, lies about 20 miles northeast of Poitiers. Niort, in the department Deux-Sevrés, which is one of the oldest towns in France, is also one of the larger towns within the region and is a centre for the French commercial services industry.

Poitou-Charentes' coastline is scattered with seaside resorts, with the Ile de Ré said to receive more hours of sunshine than anywhere in France bar the Cote DAzur and the neighbouring Ile d'Oléron is the second largest island in France after Corsica. Both islands, which are famed for their shellfish and beautiful beaches are connected to the mainland by bridge and are accessible by car.

Finally, the town of Cognac, located on the banks of the Charente River, is known for Poitou-Charentes' most famous export, the brandy of the same name. The town itself has a pleasant and relaxed feel and it seems that everyone here is involved, one way or another in the business of making brandy.
