The Puglia region
Puglia is in the "Heel of the Boot" of Italy. It is a wonderful place to explore for great food and wine, guaranteed sun and beautiful beaches. The summers are lovely and hot. There are wondefrul small towns such as Ostuni known as the "White City" with its historic centre and great restaurants; Alberbello, a "trulli" monument town and larger cities such as Brindisi, where you can shop and stroll or eat along the waterfront or the great Baroque architecture of Lecce. Torre Guaceto (about 10 minutes away) is a nature reserve and its long beach with white sand and crystal clear waters is great for swimming and tanning. Further afield, this little known region is awash with rolling vineyards, midieval villages and craggy shorelines, visit wine-making hilltop towns and soak up la dolce vita in sun-dappled piazzas. The nearest airport is at Brindisi about 15 minutes drive away and BARI about an hour away. There are train services to/from Brindisi from Rome and the North. There are ferries from Brindisi to Alabania, Greece and Turkey.
San Vito dei Normanni
Brindisi is a city with great history, modern day shopping and a attractive pedestrianised waterfront. Explore the ending of the "Appian Way", where the Roman soldiers arrived from Rome and departed to the East. Enjoy alfresco dining on the waterfront after a pleasant stroll.

"Hot, hot, hot!"
We travelled to Italy in search of some summer sun, fine wine, great food, and we were not disappointed! The villa was well placed for exploring the local area, with San Vito Dei Normanni only a few minutes drive down the road if you need to top up on anything at the local shops (which were well stocked) or from the street sellers. The watermelons are a must! Ostuni is well worth the drive one evening and at festival time when we arrived, the town was absolutely buzzing. One afternoon we took the coast road to Brindisi and stopped off at one of the many beaches along the way, clear waters, clear and great for swimming. The villa itself is set in large grounds and in August it was warm enough to dine outside most nights, after extracting the children from the pool.... a tough job as they spent much of their time immersed! It's set well back from the road to Brindisi, in a quiet spot and is very peaceful. All in we had a great week and could've easily spent a lot more time exploring or just chilling. Finally, I must mention our host Lina, who couldn't have been more helpful and organised a number of things for us over the week - including booking us in at "Volcano", a great local restaurant in San Vito.
