Description

Chalet de l'Ours is a traditional farmhouse in the charming ski resort of Sainte Foy-Tarentaise. At 115sqm it is considerably larger than most 3 bedroom apartments and offers a very large open plan living/dining/kitchen area with some stunning mountain views.

Fully renovated in 2013 in a traditional style it is luxuriously furnished with beautiful stone floors throughout. Spread over 2 floors it offers a large, comfortable living/dining area, a fully equipped kitchen, 3 beautiful bedrooms each with hand-crafted, built-in storage, 2 bathrooms, a separate 3rd wc and offers wi-fi throughout.

The living area has 2 large, extremely comfortable Chesterfield sofas, a matching club chair, west-facing balcony, log fire and a large smart TV. There is also a mezzanine area with a Chesterfield sofa-bed and expansive views to the north. Large windows facing north also offer fantastic, uninterrupted mountain views. These windows and the balcony offer a huge amount of natural light.

There is also a mezzanine area with a Chesterfield sofa-bed and expansive views to the north. Large windows facing north also offer fantastic, uninterrupted mountain views. These windows and the balcony offer a huge amount of natural light.

The main bedroom offers en-suite facilities and also benefits from a west-facing balcony. There is ample room for a cot should that be necessary. The second and third bedrooms have uninterrupted mountain views to the north whilst all 3 bedrooms have extremely comfortable double beds and hand-crafted, made-to-measure storage built in. The 3rd bedroom can be offered as a twin rather than a double.

Both bathrooms offer bath, shower and wc facilities and have large, well lit mirrors over the sink and the large boilers will support two people running a bath simultaneously.

The kitchen is fully equipped with a butler sink, 110cm range-style cooker featuring a double oven, microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and a Nespresso coffee maker.

Sainte Foy is a great resort for children. The village is small and very safe and there is a lot of outdoor space for them to run around. The apartment has plenty of space for baby items such as push chairs and cots. However, if you have toddlers please be aware that we have 2 open staircases and none of the drawers or cupboards are currently child-proofed.

The Winter season:

We operate a Sunday changeover for most of the Winter season. This offers clients the dual benefits of travelling to and from the resort when the roads are quiet (the main changeover day in the wider area is Saturday and traffic can be extremely heavy, especially during the peak weeks) and being able to enjoy a Saturday on the slopes as the final day of their holiday (as most people are either leaving or arriving on a Saturday the slopes are generally very quiet on a Saturday).

May & October half-term:

As these are generally quiet booking periods we can offer the May & October half-term weeks with a Friday check-in and Sunday check-out for the price of a standard week. We are also open to extending this offer to other weeks outside the peak Winter and Summer seasons.

Outside the ski season:

Chalet de l’Ours offers great walking, hiking and mountain biking opportunities direct from the front door.

During the summer the resort's Grand Plan lift will open for foot passengers and mountain bikers.

The wider Haute Tarentaise and Savoie area has a rich and varied history having been ruled at various times by both Italy and France. The resort itself shares a 25km border Italy and several historic fortifications are within an easy drive. These include the Fort de la Platte, Fort du Truc and Fort de la Redoute Ruinee.

There are several nature reserves in the area with the Réserve Naturelle des Hauts de Villaroger being a 15 minute drive away. Please be aware that this area serves as a refuge of the Tetras-Lyre and can only be accessed with an approved guide.

The apartment contains several maps and books detailing local walks for all levels of fitness. The walk to the hamlet of Le Monal is easily achievable whilst the return hike to Lac Noir is likely to take most of the day but is well worth the effort. June is a particularly colourful month as the meadow flowers are in full bloom.

Location description from owner

The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region

Sainte Foy Tarentaise borders Italy and at various points both Italy and France have laid claim to the Haute Tarentaise and the wider Savoie region. As a result the area has a rich history and there are numerous historic fortifications within easy reach including the Fort de la Platte, Fort du Truc and Fort de la Redoute Ruinee.

Nature lovers are also well catered for. Within a 15 minute drive lies the nature reserve of Réserve Naturelle des Hauts de Villaroger, This reserve can only be accessed with an approved guide and is one of several in the area. There are a wealth of walks in the region to suit all levels of fitness with June being a particularly colourful period as the meadow flowers burst into bloom.

The apartment has maps and books covering local walks for those looking to explore.

The cycling community is also well catered for. There are some seriously challenging road climbs in the area, The Cormet de Roseland, Col de Petit Saint Bernard and Col de l'Iseran all present a significant challenge. For those looking to spend their time exploring the region by mountain bike we can recommend local guides.

For those looking for something a little bit more laid back the picturesque village of Beaufort is a short drive over the Cormet de Roseland and the equally enticing Italian village of La Thuile can be accessed via the Col de Petit Saint Bernard which also encompasses the resort of La Rosiere.

Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise

During the winter the charming ski resort of Sainte Foy offers some of the best off-piste skiing and snowboarding available anywhere, but without the crowds and lift queues of its more famous neighbours. The quiet slopes are also ideal for families, beginners or those looking to brush up on their skills.

For those ready to explore beyond the resort boundaries we strongly recommend hiring a local guide and experiencing some of the readily accessible back-country routes through the national park areas that border Sainte Foy. These areas are very much a part of the off-piste attraction the resort is famed for.

If you are new to the Haute Savoie you may want to explore other resorts in the area. Tignes and Val d'Isere are just a 15 minute drive away and the huge Paradiski area is accessible from the small hamlet of Villaroger just a 10 minute drive away and visible across the valley from the apartment. Whilst these resorts lack the village charm of Sainte Foy they do offer better shopping opportunities.

The late spring and summer offer some fantastic walking, hiking and mountain biking opportunities directly from the front door. The walk from the resort to the hamlet of Le Monal is easily accomplished whilst the return hike to Lac Noir will take most of the day but is well worth effort.

However, the chalet can also serve as a delightfully tranquil base from which to explore the whole Savoie region.

“Excellent stay”

Reviewed 20 Apr 2015

We are a family of 4 and stayed for a week at the chalet de l'ours. It is very cosy and confortable, with beautiful and quality furnishings. The beds are very comfy too and the kitchen is very well furbished. During the day there is a shuttle that goes up the hill and that drops people off right by the Esf, the ride is only a couple of minutes and we never has to wait for it more than 3 mn. Lee has given us very helpful advice regarding the childrens ´ ski lessons and Lesley has been very helpful and nice during our stay. We hope to be back at the chalet for Christmas!
