Location description from owner
The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region
The Gironde department is part of the Aquitaine region situated in the South West of France. This particular estuary region is also known as the Gironde Estuary and includes Bourg, Blaye, Plessac, Berson and many more beautiful villages, towns and ports.
Bordeaux is the capital of the Aquitaine region, as well as the "prefecture" of the Gironde department. A vast area of Bordeaux is a classified UNESCO world heritage site, boasting 474 listed public buildings, 100 of which are grade 1 listed. The old french nicknames for the city were "La perle d'Aquitaine" (The Pearl of Aquitaine), and "La Belle Endormie" (Sleeping Beauty).
Bordeaux is the heart and soul of the world's finest wine trails - to hear the merest whisper of one of the following names is enough to bring a smile to many a wine lover's face and help to make mouthes water. In less than one hour you could be visiting one of the world's most famous and historical wine chateaux including Château Margaux, Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Angelus and Château Moulin St Georges, to name but a few.
Each appellation within the Bordeaux region holds an annual spring wine festival. These tend to follow one of two formats:
“Portes Ouvertes” Wine growers remain within their Chateaux and open their doors to the public for wine tasting (degustations), feasting and often musical events – fun days.
“Printemps des Vines” - Wine growers gather together into one place and hold one big gourmet wine tasting festival.
Hopefully, you'll discover a bargain – a marvellous “wine gem”.
Our holiday retreat also offers easy access to the Atlantic coast and water sport activites.
The beautiful, golden sandy beaches of the Atlantic ocean are easily reached via the Blaye Vehicle Ferry and short drive to some beautiful sandy beaches. Lac Arcachon and other nearby lakes offer safe bathing and are a great place for learning and practising any water sport activities. This area is flat and great for cycling and walking - there's lots of cycle paths and routes to explore. Activities here include: kite surfing, wind surfing, surfing, water skiing, sailing, cycling, Europe's largest sand dune - the Dune du Pilat is well worth a visit too.
Haute Charante and Charante Maritime
Heading north you will discover the glorious beaches and small fishing ports of the Charente-Maritime such as the Meschers-sur-Gironde, Royan, La Rochelle and of course the jewel of the Atlantic coastline - the Ile de Ré. There is a zoo at Royan, an aquarium at La Rochelle and lots of museums and art galleries with some great antique shops and broncantes throughout this area. Another interesting place to visit is the Remy Martin cognac distillery in the historic town of Cognac. Visits could include:
• surfing and beach activities
• zoo (one of the best in Europe at Royan)
• aquarium (boasts more than 10,000 sea creatures )
• cognac and visit to distillery
• visit to Royan and La Rochelle
• Ile de Re and UNESCO site
The local area offers plenty of leisure activities to suit everyone and most of them are with a 5 to 25 minute drive including:
Fishing, jet skiing, boat trips, cycling, walking, bird spotting, visits to local historic world UNESCO heritage sites at Blaye Citadel, golf, tennis, horse riding, coach and horses ride, horse jumping events, drawing, painting and taking photographs, bespoke wine tours & tastings, swimming and fishing @ lac de Moulin Blanc and it's lakeside restaurant, roman villa ruins and remains.
Our closest amenities can be found in the nearby village of Berson (1.5 kms). Here you'll find the artisan Boulanger (Bakery) which is filled with the fresh aroma of warm, fresh baguettes and croissants for a typical French breakfast treat. This village also has a small supermarket, a Tabac (which doubles up as a bar) and a pharmacy etc.
Bourg-sur-Gironde (8 kms) has a farmers market on Sunday mornings and plenty of shops including a hyper marker - Carrefour. There's plenty of beautiful and historic buildings to wander around.
Blaye, Bourg-sur-Gironde and Markets
The UNESCO site and port of Blaye (7 kms) is an wonderful local place to visit with the historic citadel and it's regular Wednesdday and Saturday morning markets - selling local fish, sea food, artisan goods and other locally grown produce or handmade crafts every Wednesday and Saturday mornings and also has a very good choice of supermarkets ( LeClerc and Lidl) and other interesting shops and cafes and bars to sit and enjoy the beautiful views of the estuary and port life.
Buorg is a beautifully peaceful port town, it also has a smaller citadel and lots of ancient buidings and architecture. There are regular farmers markets every Sunday moring and a hypermarket (Carrefour).
If you enjoy eating out, there's a really good selection of local restaurants, one has live music on 3 evenings a week, in the summer season. All offering a great variety of delicious food, one includes free wine in the set price, all include a warm welcome.
