Location description from owner

Northern Ireland region

The Causeway Coastal Route has some of the most jaw dropping scenery you'll ever encounter and is considered to be one of most scenic drives in the world. From the capitol Belfast, you can take the road to Carrickfergus and on to Larne which is the gateway to the Glens of Antrim passing through the picturesque villages of Ballygalley, Carnlough Glenarm Cushendall and Cushendun and on to the seaside town of Ballycastle, which each year hosts the famous Lammas fair at the end of August . Four miles off the coast of Ballycastle is situated the island of Rathlin with its seal colony and puffin bird sanctuary which is accessed by regular ferry crossings from Ballycastle. This is basically where the Irish Sea meets the North Atlantic Ocean. As you travel west from Ballycastle you will come to the small village and harbour of Ballintoy, made famous in one of the episodes of the cult series 'Game Of Thrones'. As you journey westwards White Park Bay and the Carrick-a-rede rope bridge are both considered worth a visit. Quite near by is the world famous National Trust and heritage site of the Giant's Causeway near Bushmills and in the town itself is posssibly the World's oldest commercial Distillery which first received its licence in 1608. As one travels further west along the coast you come across Dunluce castle which is a ruins dating back to the 17th century which was destroyed by fire in 1641. A couple of miles further on the coast structure turns from basalt to limestome and the white rocks as they are locally known comes into view. This is particularily good beach area for surfing when the wind is in the right direction. This beach stretches all the way to Portrush and sand dunes behind give way to the famous Royal Portrush Golf course where the 2012 golf Irish open was held. In Portrush you enter what is colloquially known as the triangle area of Portrush ,Portstewart and Coleraine area is where annually the North West 200 motorcyle road race is held in the middle of May each year. Portstewart which is similar in size to Portrush is home to another championship links golf course and its sand dunes give way to the two mile Portstewart strand which is owned and maintained by the national trust. At the westward end of this strand is where the Bann river flows into the sea an area known as the bar mouth. Further west across the river is the small seaside town of Castlerock, hamlet of Downhill and Benown Strand a seven mile beach fronting onto Lough Foyle. A ferry at Magilligan sails between that location and Greencastle in Co.Donegal. A beautiful railway journey is the route between Coleraine and Derry/Londonderry which takes in all the areas previously mentioned.

Portstewart

The Portstewart/Portrush/Coleraine area is compact in size and amenaties both for sporting and other pursuits. Portrush and Portstewart are arguably among two of the finist golf links courses in the world. The immediate area offers excellant fishing both sea and game river fishing anglers. It is also a favoured area for cycling, walking and the many sea sports whether it be swimming, surfing, wind surfing or the fovoured play pursuit of children building sand castles on the many famous blue flag beaches - Portstewart strand being the closest which stretches towards the River Bann where it flows into the sea at an area known as the bar mouth, a distance of approximately 2 miles in length. The town of Portstewart has a beautiful promenade which looks out towards Lough Foyle and Donegal. It has a delightful play park beside the front and has many lively restaurants, bars and ice cream parlours Mauds and Morellis being two of the better known ones.
