Very Good

“Lovely little family run establishment, great base for exploring the East Coast of Rhodes.”

Reviewed 16 Oct 2012

I turned 40 this October and I was originally looking for a villa to share with friends, where I would stay for 2 weeks and friends could join me as and when they could. Unfortunately my friends plans changed so I opted for an appartment instead but I wanted one where I had the option if friends 'could' make it last minute, they could stay without massively affecting the cost esp as Thomas Cook wanted to charge a ridiculous supplement for each additional person being added during the two week block I was away. I found Summer Memories on holiday Lettings and contacted the owners and explained my situation. George (the owners son) explained in my quote he gave me that the price was 'for the apartment and providing I didn't exceed the amount of people the apartment was suitable for, the cost was a fixed price. Perfect for what I wanted & George was extremely helpful with the booking procedure as well as organising transport from the airport. (Note if getting a taxi to here from the airport, ask George to book it for you as it will be 10 euros cheaper than if you just take one from the airport yourself.) I was in Room 11 the first week, a spacious mid floor appmt that sleeps 4-5 people (2 single beds in a main bedroom, 2 single beds in a partitioned room from the kitchen/dining room and a double sofa bed in the dining room. The kitchen is clean and adequate. Simple and has a few plates and utensils. (Note: sounds silly but if you can bring a scourer/washing up liquid as they aren't supplied though they are cheap enough to buy I suppose). The bathroom was clean, towels supplied every day except Sunday. The water was always hot, the shower was powerful. My shower head was broken but I mentioned it to George and it was fixed the next day. The balcony is spacious and had a table and chairs as well as a drying line. You don't need to bring a hairdryer as one was supplied. There is a safe which you can use at a fee but I didn't bother as I felt the facility was safe enough anyway. There is also a fan in each room and you can have air con at a fee also but I didn't bother. During my second week I was asked if I could move up to the top floor due to a family with children arriving who wanted a lower floored room. Essentially I had the exact same apartment with a better view so I was happy to do so! :) The pool is cleaned every day by Vassilis the owner and is shallow at one end getting deep quite quickly to 1.9m. There were plenty of sunbeds but I was there out of season. I gather it can get busy during peak months. The bar does a good selection of well priced food and snacks from morning to 5.30pm and the Summer Memories drinks are some of the cheapest in Pefkos. Stavros, Vassilis' elder son makes a mean Mohjito! There is a happy hour every day and both George, Stavros and their mum Debbie are always helpful with any needs during your stay and very knowledgable about the island. There are 'theme nights' (BBQ's in main season once a week, quiz night Mondays, Kareoke nights Thursdays & after the BBQ on Sundays). Bear in mind if you go end of season they may not always run if the hotel is quieter. However there is plenty to do in and around Pefkos/Lindos. The bar also has a pool table, an air hockey table and 3 computers should you wish to use the internet. That said, wifi is available with a very good signal. Buses run from a stop 3-5 minutes walk from the hotel and the taxi rank is a 5 minute walk in the opposite direction. I had last visited Rhodes in 1997 and stayed in Lindos and it was my initial intention to return there but I am glad I chose Pefkos as most of the villas in Lindos don't have pools due to strict planning laws (unless you stay above the main village). Pefkos was the ideal alternative as its only a 5 min bus ride to Lindos & its beaches, restaurants, bars etc, but there are still plenty of eateries, bars etc in Pefkos also. Pefkos beach isn't as sandy, sheltered or picturesque as Lindos cove but its still pleasant to relax on and watch the day go by. There are also boat trips to Lindos from Pefkos ranging from 16-20 euros. Further South is Lardos, Kiotari and Prasonissi which is easily accessible by car or bus. All in all, I cannot fault the Spartalis family and the Summer Memories Hotel. Granted its not a 5* luxury hotel but then I didn't want to be 'just another face' in a 'faceless hotel. I much prefer smaller family run establishments and Summer Memories is just that. Its clean, spacious, nice grounds, quiet and perfect for couples, families, friends old and young. The Spartalis family are lovely and so helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. I was genuinely sad to leave last week and I DEFINATELY will return in the future. Thank you Sharon :)
