“Vacation in a lovely villa”

Reviewed 25 Apr 2016

We, that is two couples, felt lucky to spend a very wonderful vacation week in this really lovely villa from 29/08/2015 until 05/09/2015. Already the warm welcome by Claire, the kind administrator, made us forget the traffic jams on the highway very quickly. We found a welcome basket with nibbles and wine prepared for us on arrival and a first tour through the villa with the appropriate explanations by Claire resulted in even exceeding our high expectations. The encounter via email with John and Christina, the owners, was very pleasant and their informative "Guide to a restful holiday" sent to us before arrival, had already given us the opportunity to familiarise ourselves with the practicalities of the villa, wide choice of excursions, restaurants and shopping. We found a very well maintained villa in equally well kept grounds. One noticed immediately that these premises were created not only for holiday guests but clearly also enjoyed by the owners for their own holidays. The decor inside and out is of high quality and we found everything we needed for a successful holiday week. The villa is located in a quiet residential area on a sloping hillside to the south and is virtually in full sunshine throughout the day, which resulted in us making good use of the generously sized pool. We also liked that we were able to park both cars inside the grounds of the property. Trips to the historic center of Montpellier and the mountainous hinterland were also a good experience. The very minor drawback was the slightly longer journey to the Mediterranean beaches, but which, once you were there, were very beautiful and left nothing to be desired. In conclusion, we can say that we can recommend this villa without any restriction. Heidi und Wilfried Oelkuch, Germany

“Our wonderful experience at Villa des Cigales”

Reviewed 10 Jul 2015

This villa is everything promised and MUCH MORE!  This is an absolutely beautiful and very livable home which we all enjoyed.  Having a disparate group of 3 married couples, one single woman, and two 13-year-old girls required that there would be multiple things to do and ample space at the villa for everyone to spread out and find their own niches.  And we did just that!  A few of us craved the small back patio and table.  That’s where early risers enjoyed their breakfasts and some online reading of the news (the Wi-Fi is excellent).  Others wanted to coziness of the kitchen table for breakfast, while others (teenagers mostly!) slept in.  The quiet and large second living room became the private hangout of the teens. Ping pong in the basement was great. Hammock snoozing became a favorite pastime. Dinners out on the covered front terrace were spectacular. We made daily forays down to the marvelous patisserie in the village and consumed untold numbers of croissants.  The two big nearby supermarkets - Casino and Carrefours - provided for every need. We found French food to be amazingly CHEAP!  The fresh veggies and fruits were exceptional and so inexpensive that we almost turned into vegans during our stay.  None of us gained a pound despite many delicious French meals that two of us prepared (we even brought French recipes with us, which were, of course, especially tasty with such great French produce).  We also had many delicious restaurant meals all over Paris, the Loire Valley, Montpellier, and the many places we visited while at the villa.  Some of us went to Aix-en-Provence and Arles, others to Carcassonne and Nimes.  We will went to the Camargue, stopping at that terrific Parc Ornithologique where they have large flocks of flamingoes.  We swam in the Med three times. The water is always clean and very refreshing, with sandy bottom. We also went up to St. Guilhem-le-Desert (twice). This is not to be missed, and in particular, people should visit the fabulous Le Grotte La Clamouse. We’ve visited lots of caves in the US, but this exceeds all of them because of its many different levels and fantastic formations.  It’s also a cool relief on a very hot day.  The village of St. Guilhem has to be among the prettiest in the whole world!  And we also stopped to swim down on the Herault River - a lot of fun, with its miniature rapids.   Montpelier is a wonderful city in itself, and the tram makes it a breeze to get to.  All of us went in at least 3 times, did some shopping, saw the major sights including the extraordinary cathedral. We loved the Musee Fabre, and enjoyed several terrific restaurants. Of course, when we weren’t doing all of these things, we were swimming in the simply gorgeous pool.  No one went through an entire day without at least one dip, and the two girls were in it until we dragged them out at 11 pm every night!    Thus, the villa provided all 9 of us with a truly wonderful vacation.  We are all back at our homes now in England, California, and Maryland, but our hearts are still in the Villa des Cigales.   We hope and intend to come back sometime!

We are very grateful for such a detailed and positive review. It reads almost like a fairytale. Your obvious happiness about your successful holiday makes it so worthwhile to keep on striving and maintain the high standard we have set ourselves for our guests. We would love to welcome you back any time!
