The Dordogne region

There is much to do and to see within the region: vineyards, markets, sea, lake with beach and play area, caves, castles, cities such as Bordeaux, Prigueux, Saint Emilion, Sarlat ....

We're in the heart of wine country in Montazeau! Here you can enjoy award-winning local red, ros and white Bergerac and Montravel wines, made at properties a short distance from your holiday home.

Just 30 minutes away are St. Emilion and Pomerol, exclusive districts of the vast Bordeaux vineyards and home to some of the finest (and at Ch. Petrus, the most expensive!) wines in the world.

We can organise a tour of a vineyard on request.

Places to visit
Every day there are local markets in different places. In summer its worth going to an evening market whith music, local food, dancing!

15min : Montpon, little practical town where you find several supermarkets and on Wednesday a nice local fresh market.

15min : Sainte Foye La Grande, a bastide . Small nice town but comes mostly alive during the Saturday market ! classified as one of Frances nicest markets!!

30min : Saint-Emilion : A must!!! Nicely renovated wine village, known from all over the world and protected! Lots of little old narrow streets. Lots of wine boetiques (expensive!!!). Go and drink a glass of local champagne in the ruines of the old abbey of Les Cordeliers. You by tickets for a visit to the monolytic church at the tourist office.

30min : Bergerac. Old and new part of the city. Small city again. Markets on Wednesday and Friday. Monbazillac is close and famous for its sweet white wines. Beautiful chteau! Eat at La Tour des Vents in Monbazillac!!!

30min : Libourne. Worth a visit at Sunday morning!, or combine when going to St Emilion or Bordeaux. Take the little roads to go there, not the motorway!!

30min : Riberac. Friday market. Quiet town, take a quick stop when going to Aubeterre.

45min: Aubeterre: wonderful art village; has a monolitic church! Amazing!

30min: Castillon La Bataille: not very special; only at market days (Monday). In july and august they organise a big show at the site of a castle with hondreds of actors and horses....the play of the war of 100 years! A exceptional experience!

45min : Bordeaux. A mix between Antwerp, Barcelona and Parijs. A world city, easily visited by foot! You can walk here for hours and hours. Little streets, the river, shopping, terrasses, antiques, ....so many things to do and to see! You cannot miss Bordeaux!!

45min : Prigueux. A bit smaller than Bordeaux. Do the walk around the old part of the city (by following the arrows). Worth a visit!!

45min : Brantme. The Veneti of the South. The Dronne River runs through the center, which makes it very beautiful. You can take a ride with a small boat.

30-75min : From Bergerac to Sarlat : Dordogne Valley, with Sarlat, Domme, Beynac, St Christophe, Limeuil, Lalinde, Lanquais lots of little lovely places to visit ; with prehistorical caves, castles etc.

30-75min : the Bastide tour, small middle aged villages as Eymet, Monpazier, Beaumont

1,5h : Atlantic Ocean: Arcachon, Dune de Pyla, beautiful beaches, extrordanary dune, worth a day trip!

“We had the most amazing wedding here!”

Reviewed 7 Sep 2011

From the moment we found this gorgeous house online, we knew it was the place we wanted to get married. We had the most amazing time and the owners Iris and Michiel were brilliant and so helpful before, during and after our stay. Very accommodating and patient and were so great at helping us prepare for our wedding day giving us names and addresses of suppliers and locals. The house is absolutely gorgeous. Finished to a very high standard. They have thought about everything and were super helpful when we needed little added extras. The rooms were luxury and the design is gorgeous. The saltwater pool and the hot tub are a real added bonus. The grounds were perfect and the outdoor space very accommodating for our 40 guests. The kitchen facilities were brilliant too with big oven and hob as well as 2 fridges to keep everything cool in the summer. We will definitely be re-visiting and have already recommended to friends. It's the perfect base to relax and explore the local area and all the vineyards. It's very child friendly too as we had a 1 year old staying with us and we had everything we needed including baby chairs, baby baths and cots. If you want an unforgettable stay - then La Chartreuse des Moulins is the place for you.

“Exceeded expectations, favourite part of our trip”

Reviewed 4 Sep 2011

This place was amazing. The owners were very friendly and extremely helpful. We stayed here with a large group (12 adults and 4 small children). There was so much room and the provisions and set up was the best I have seen in a rental property. The surrounding country was beautiful, the local wine and the local restaurant was so very good. Three euro for a bottle of great wine! The outdoor areas were great too and lots of room for the kids and laying in the sun or under a shady tree. There were also lots of toys and games already there for the kids which was very helpful. If we had our time over again, we would have stayed at least 2 weeks instead of 1 week. There was so much to see and do locally, but we didn't want to leave the house! The only hassle we had was with payment (trouble with banks) and finding where the house was - there are a number of ways in and out of the street, so the directions became confusing. Would definitely go back there.
