If you are visiting Granada and looking for a place to stay Cortijo la Mata is perfect for couples, families, or groups of friends as it offers a really tranquil environment while at the same time offering its visitors all that the city has on offer.

Cortijo la Mata, owned by Johnny and Angie and superbly managed by the ever-friendly and helpful Laura, is a traditional Andalusian farmhouse built in the year 1911 converted into a holiday villa with all mod cons. Situated in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range yet only 15 minutes by car from the Alhambra Palace and the city of Granada the house is located just outside the old village of Monachil in an area of outstanding natural beauty surrounded by olive, almond and cherry trees.

For those who are looking for a complete escape to the Andalusian countryside yet want to take advantage of all that the city of Granada has to offer plus take in the ski slopes of Spain's highest mountain range the location is perfect.

Sierra Nevada ski station is only 30 minutes away with the added advantage that there is a separate road from the village to the resort hence avoiding much of the Granada city traffic.

Total land area of 1,500m2 which includes the villa (275m2 distributed over three floors), a 30m2 pool, beautiful mature gardens of over 100m2, several patios and terraces totalling around 300m2, parking area of 100m2 (for 4 cars) and private mountainside of 800m2.

The perfect setting for celebrations, family reunions, workshops and seminars. From mountain biking, rock climbing and Spanish courses to flamenco lessons and cookery courses we can organize almost anything! Cortijo la Mata is registered with the Andalusian Tourist Board VTAR/GR/00194.

We had a very enjoyable stay at villa ‘Cortijo La Mata’, the owner (Scott) was always contactable to answer any queries in advance of our stay and the local caretaker (Laura) was very helpful throughout our visit. Despite the heat (45 degrees one evening due to a heat wave) we did a number of walks through the Sierra Nevada mountains outside Monachil, went up on the cable cars at the Sierra Navada ski resort which was only a 50 minute drive away, had Bar-B-Ques in some evenings, and visited Granada on a number of evenings (20 minute drive into the city centre). We particularly liked the fact that the temperature cooled down at night making it possible to sleep more comfortably. We believe that this was due to the cooler mountain air at approx. 1,000 meters. The layout of the villa also suited our party as each of the three individual families had their own space, yet we also enjoyed the benefits of being under one roof. If you are seeking a modern sterile environment, then this is not the venue for you. The age group of our party, 11 in total, ranged from 2 yrs. (youngest grandchild) to 75 yrs. (Grandparent). Overall we were very happy with our experience in Monachil and would give serious consideration to returning again.

How do damage deposits work?
