The Argyll and Bute region
Millport is a very nostalgic town on the Isle of Cumbrae. Although less than 10 mins by ferry from the Scottish mainland, being on Millport is like stepping back in time, with great beach access and lots of traditional seaside fun.
Scotland's most accessible island can be reached in just over 8 minutes from the Ayrshire town of Largs, and just over 60 minutes from Glasgow by car, bus or train.
You'll discover a world that time forgot; safe clean sandy beaches and rock pools; strolling along a prom; relaxing with great views; eating out in cafes, pubs and restaurants; just unwinding and letting the world go by.
The island benefits from its own microclimate thanks to the Gulf stream, often basking in sunshine when it's raining in Glasgow!
Millport has the UK's smallest cathedral, the house with the smallest frontage, a world famous Marine Research Station, over 1000 bikes for hire, ferry crossings every 15 min in the summer, a good variety of shops, indoor and outdoor amusements, children's trampolines, old fashioned boat swings and much, much more.
The highest point on Cumbrae provides unrivalled views of the Clyde coastline and on a clear day you can see the mountains of Jura.
Millport, along with Rothesay on the Isle of Bute, is famous with generations of daytrippers from Glasgow as one of the resorts visited going "doon the watter" (down the water), meaning taking a trip aboard a River Clyde paddle steamer. It is still possible to experience a traditional day out courtesy of the Waverley Paddle Steamer which calls at Millport twice a week during the summer.
For a town of its size, Millport is very well served by shops. Amongst the shops available are newsagents, grocers, craft and gift shops, clothes shops, electrical and hardware stores. There are three cycle hire shops, with several hundred bicycles between them as cycling round the island (10.5 miles) is a very popular pastime.
There are several good restaurants (inlcuding Italian, Scottish and Chinese) and a great chip shop.
The Cathedral of the Isles of the Scottish Episcopal Church, completed in 1851 and which seats only 100 people, is the smallest cathedral in Great Britain and perhaps Europe.
Millport has an 18-hole golf course and bowling green, both with spectacular views over the Arran hills. Other recreational facilities include a crazy golf course and two football pitches, one at either end of the town. For fishing, there are two fresh water reservoirs beside the golf course where fly fishing is available and excellent sea fishing, primarily for mackerel, is available. The best place for this is from the rocks at Farland Point, just inside the town limits.
The town has hosted a Country and Western Festival in September for the past 19 years, and a fireworks display is held during September Weekend. Millport has the world's narrowest house, The Wedge which at its front, measures just 47 inches or 1.19 metres. The house is 22 feet long by 11 feet wide at its widest point.
Millport Bay contains a number of free-to-use visitor moorings, and is a popular destination for sailors in the summer. There is a small boat yard at the western end of the town.
The library also provides free wifi access.
The CalMac ferry from Largs operates every 15 mins in the Summer and every 30 mins for the rest of the year. The bus service meets the ferry at the Cumbrae slip and takes you to Millport in just a few minutes.
