Location description from owner

The Occitanie region

The Languedoc-Roussillon is one of the most fascinating areas of Europe, bordering the Mediterranean Sea to the east and the Pyrenees Mountains to the south. It benefits from an exceptional climate and has an unusually rich wildlife, a spectacular coast, and surprising history. Things to see include mountains, rivers and lakes, ancient cities, towns, villages, thermal springs, abbeys, and cathedrals, châteaux and castles, notably the famous mountain fortresses popularly known as Cathar Castles.

In recent years it has become a popular French holiday destination, with long sunny days, Mediterranean beaches, tourist facilities, thousands of miles of walks, and rides, National Parks and wildlife reserves (such as the Camargue and the Cevennes), thermal springs and spas, grottoes and caves, and vestiges of the Languedoc's long history, including dinosaur bones and eggs, prehistoric human remains, dolmens and megaliths, geology, archaeology and palaeontology, Greek and Roman architecture, and everywhere reminders of the the Cathars, the papal Crusade against them, and the Papal Inquisition that followed the crusade.

Things to do in the Languedoc-Roussillon include a range of holidays, including naturist holidays and activity holidays. Sports include a wide range of land sports, water sports, air sports, mountain sports, winter sports, golf, hunting, shooting, hawking, and fishing. There are also numerous cultural activities, along with French regional food specialties, and Languedoc wines. Local festivals range from bull-running to the Fecos in Limoux and from sea-jousting in the north to celebrating la jour de St-Jean in the south by fire-jumping.

Marseillan

Marseillan is situated on the Mediterranean coast, bordered inland by the Canal du Midi and the Thau Bassin, and has the good fortune to combine the pleasure of both the beach and a small but undeniably charming port, much appreciated by yachtsmen. Marseillan has retained its typically southern French authenticity where the sun-drenched accent of its inhabitants will warm your heart and invite you to enjoy some unforgettable moments of relaxation. During the year many activities are programmed. Sports, culture, markets, the seaside resort takes on a party rhythm. Every Tuesday sees a local produce market in the Town Square and in the summer Friday evenings have a great craft style market. There are many festivals with fireworks and music throughout the summer.
Don't miss the great beaches of Marseillan-Plage as well as it's many seaside resort type attractions like the fun fair, go-karting and a flea market.Meze has a smaller beach with a picturesque harbour with lovely restaurants. The Etang de Thau is one of France's foremost Oyster Parks so visit Bouzigue on a Sunday to see the locals and enjoy the seafood !
Many towns nearby offer history and culture, Pezanas has wonderful art and craft shops/boutiques and more.
Montpellier offers great shopping and travel a little further for the castle at Aigue Mort.
Carcassone is another wonderful castle to visit featured in many films.

“Sweetheart of a property!”

Reviewed 7 Oct 2012

This is such a sweet property in a charming well- maintained village. Lots going on day and night, time is marked on the hour by the local church bells. The interior is fresh and clean, with winding staircase leading to adequate sized bedroom and larger than average bathroom and shower. Despite a personal wish for a slightly moe comffortable bed, i I wholeheartedly recommend it as it represents good value.

“IDEAL HOLIDAY HOME”

Reviewed 9 Apr 2012

This small house has been lovingly and tastefully setup for a comfortable stay. The location is in the old town and minutes walk from a a surprisingly large choice of bars and restaurants and delicious French shops. There are no views to speak of but the outlook onto the narrow street is pleasant enough (apart from the road works that were under way when we were there). Things that would make the place better would be a wi fi connection (especially useful if you have ongoing travel to organise). Although the bathroom has been done up nicely, for someone from the new world who hasn't seen shower curtains since the 1960s, it's a little bit annoying using the "shower in the bath" setup. Also even tho' it was only March we had trouble finding a parking spot near the house- god knows what it would be like in the summer. But these are minor gripes and we enjoyed the place immensely and of course the little town of Marseiilan is delightful and an ideal base for that part of France.

Owner's reply: Thank you so much for taking the time to review our house,we haven't had any comments about the parking in the height of the summer in the past three years, there is usually a space to be found. That said it is true that Marseillan is no longer the best kept secret and it seems to attract more people each year, so it can get very busy in the summer months as it is so lovely. It was good to get some feedback! Kind Regards Stacy Wright
