The Paphos District

Paphos/Pafos is situated on the island's south-west coast and sheltered by the Troodos mountains which provide winter skiing just an hour's drive away. Its old town of narrow streets rests on a cliff about 2km inland overlooking the sea and merges with a newer town of expanding commercial, retail and residential suburbs.

The Paphos area is full of archaeological treasures, so much so that UNESCO has included it in its World Cultural Heritage list. These treasures include extensive mosaics from the Houses of Dionyssos, Theseus and Alon, only recently discovered after 16 centuries beneath the soil and still being excavated to this day. Adjacent to these is the ancient Odeon amphitheatre and ,just a few hundred metres further west, the vast array of underground tombs of the island's ancient kings and rulers.

Other places of interest worth visiting include the harbour which is guarded by a fort built in 1592 AD;

Latsi Bay (Polis); Akamas Peninsula; Aphrodite's Baths; Aphrodite's Birthplace at Petra tou Romiou; Lara Bay turtle sanctuary; Avakas Gorge; St Georgios of Pegeias Isle; Lempa Village;and St Neophytos Monastery.

Its good road connections make Paphos a perfect base from which to visit other parts of the island. Polis on the north-west coast is just 30 minutes drive, Troodos mountains 60 minutes and the capital Nicosia (Lefkosia) about 120 minutes. Pathos International Airport is just 15 km distant via the B6 (currently undergoing upgrading as is the airport itself to provide a new terminal) or slightly longer via the excellent A6 motorway.

The climate in Paphos is hot and dry virtually all year and tempered by frequent and welcome sea breezes. It has 335 days of sunshine with, in the summer months, at least 12 hours of sun each day. Even in winter months, the temperature rarely drops below 15 degrees C during the day. Rainfall is low and limited mostly to winter months when it can be short and sharp, but in the last few years even this has been in short supply.

Kato Paphos

Kato Paphos, which means "below Paphos", starts at the base of the town "cliff" and stretches to the sea. It is focussed around a picturesque harbour guarded over by an ancient fort. The harbour is filled with colourful fishing boats and pleasure craft and lined by open-air fish restaurants. This is the place to be on those endless balmy evenings.

Starting at the harbour, which benefits from a large FREE car park, and stretching eastwards for over a kilometre is a seaside promenade lined with shops, restaurants and hotels. The stretch of promenade nearest the harbour has recently undergone a significant facelift involving repaving and the removal of the old sea wall to open up the front and turn it into one of the most attractive and relaxing tourists areas in the whole of Cyprus. Also recently opened is a mosaic pathway running by the sea and connecting the harbour with the Tombs of the Kings area, with plans to extend it all the way to Coral Bay.

THINGS TO DO

There is so much to see and do in Kato Paphos and the surrounding area; many of the World Cultural Heritage sites are here and there are a number of very good museums in the town above.

The west coast coastline varies from sand and pebble beaches (three in Kato Paphos) to secluded coves and rugged cliffs. Coral Bay with its sandy beach and watersports is 15 minutes drive away, and Paphos water park with its many slides and activities for all ages is just 5 minutes drive. At the harbour you can hire a speed boat or take a trip in a glass-bottomed boat.

OR WHY NOT TRY:

Jeep or Quad Bike Safaris;

Karting;

Golf - there are three courses nearby;

Skiing - in the Troodos mountains in winter

Paragliding over the sea;

Walking - there are 48 signed trails covering 200 km throughout the island;

Paphos Aquarium;

Paphos Bird and Animal Park;

Kathikas Donkey Farm;

(Maps and guidebooks can be found in the penthouse for your reference.)

EATING & DRINKING

You will be spoilt for choice here because Kato Paphos has literally hundreds of good eating places to suit all tastes and budgets. Most restaurants have good vegetarian selections, too. Local wine and beer is excellent and cheap. And if you are self-catering, the Carrefour, Orphanides and Papantiniou supermarkets are first rate, but don't overlook the numerous small but well equipped baker's with their mouth watering pastries.

“Paphos Penthouse stay”

Reviewed 11 Aug 2019

Really lovely apartment with fab all round balcony and sun terrace with a pergola. We had a great visit in July/August 2019. The apartment was clean and well equipped including beach towels. The pool is great and we only ever saw one other person in it. We ate out most nights Pambis a few times the chicken kebab was amazing. Namaste is and Indian street food restaurant which was fabulous we also ate at the grill house opposite corner to cafe Nero which was also lovely. Gillian the owner was really responsive and when the air-con in the livingroom wasn’t working it was sorted in 24hours. Tandy the on-site manager also very responsive and put in and excellent welcome package which was very handy after a late and delayed flight. Thanks for a great holiday xx

Owner's reply: Thank you for a lovely review Hilary . So glad you enjoyed the apartment and had such gastronomic delights. Come again soon ! Regards

Great Apartment but even better huge private sun terrace. Our first time in Paphos, we really fell in love with it. So much to do and see. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

Owner's reply: Thank you so much Rachel - we are so glad you enjoyed and especially with the children. We look forward to your visit next May. Thanks for choosing us !! Kind wishes , Gillian

We have just returned from a wonderful week in the sun. The penthouse was amazing and was like a home from home. Gillian has thought of everything to make the stay perfect. We were really impressed with the roof terrace and spent many hours up there soaking up the sun and having bbqs. We would highly recommend staying here and we would love to stay again when visiting beautiful Paphos.

Owner's reply: Hi Rita - thank you for your lovely review. We are so glad you enjoyed yourselves. You are welcome back any time!! Kind wishes - Gillian and Anthony

“Family holiday to Paphos”

Reviewed 21 May 2017

Lovely place both inside and out, located close to Paphos town and harbour in a very peaceful area. Modern apartment with all the facilities you need to make your stay a relaxing one. The kitchen has all the cooking appliances necessary if you want to cook your own meals and there is a BBQ on the roof terrace which we made use of one evening while taking in the views over Paphos with the sea in the distance. If you prefer to eat out which we did quite often there are some lovely restaurants in the area.Bedrooms are comfortable, one has ensuite plus there is a separate bathroom. The apartment has 2 TV's so I was able to keep up with the news back home and watch my favourite rugby team play while I was away. The roof terrace is huge with sun loungers and a place to sit in the shade while you read a book or sip a cold drink. Nice swimming pool which is shared between the other apartments however we rarely saw anyone else using it and had it to ourselves. The harbour is a relaxing 25 minute walk on the route we took however there may be a quicker route but its an easy walk as its all flat and was nice to take in a bit of the locality as we strolled along. There are orange trees growing along the route and the flowers looked amazing. I would recommend you hire a car, its very easy to drive in Cyprus its just like being at home. Undercover parking is available to keep your car cool in the heat and there are some amazing places to visit all within 1 hour drive and some as close as 15-20 minutes. The harbour has a free car park too so if walking is a problem its just a 5 or 6 minute drive. A weeks car hire is approx 200 Euros and they will even pick you up from the airport. I would highly recommend this place as it has everything you need and would definitely return again in the future. Good value for money.

Owner's reply: Hi Gareth - we really appreciate your detailed review of our property and so glad you enjoyed yourselves. We hope to welcome you again someday soon. Kind wishes Jill and Antonio

“Lovely Appartment with everything you need and more!”

Reviewed 23 Apr 2017

This is a lovely modern apartment with a balcony around the property perfect for your sunny breakfasts outside! The facilities are clean and excellent and the kitchen has everything you need if you want to cook as a change to eating out. The apartment has a shared swimming pool (a little bit cold in April but refreshing on a hot day!) and the roof top terrace is really spectacular giving you views across Paphos and a great place to sunbathe and chill out in the evenings! The apartment is close to everything you would want to see in Paphos, you can walk to the centre of Paphos but we hired a car so that we had the freedom to travel a bit further a field when we fancied it. A lovely comfortable apartment a great place to come home to after a busy day of sight seeing or relaxing on the beach! Would highly recommend, like a home from home!

Owner's reply: Hello Siobhan - we are grateful for your excellent review and look forward to welcoming you and family again before too long. Paphos is truly exceptional and we are glad you appreciate comfortable surroundings . Thank you Kind regards

“Excellent Accomodation in Kato Pahos”

Reviewed 4 Nov 2016

I stayed in Penthouse 201 for 2 weeks in September 2016. This was my first visit to Cyprus.We travelled as a party of 3 the first week,and myself the 2nd week. the Apartment came as a very pleasant suprise.it is beautifully appointed and very comfortable.It is fully air conditioned and has doors and windows in every room which gives a wonderfull (and needed) through passage of air which cooled the Apt down. The bedrooms are very comfortable,one en suite,both a large size and with everything needed to ensure that the stay will be effortless. The kitchen is superb and has a "fresh water" tap which supplies limitless drinking water. Hot water plentfull! The property has a huge roof terrace which is private, and has everything needed for a comfortable stay. there is also a pool for the apartments (4 I think) in 2 weeks we were the only people to use it.It is 30ft x 15ft approx and was a beautifull temperature...felt like it was a heated pool! Bus stop about 5 mins walk away and local pub/restaurant "Pambis Diner" which has a nice menu and great prices. Quick tip about buses.....get a 20 euro weekly bus pass.It will pay for itself again and again! taxis ...be carefull and agree prices before travel...we were fleeced several times. generally I found Cyprus and Paphos to be "Grown Up" with lots of very nice traditional eateries;the Harbour area is a joy to walk around or sit in one of the bars overlooking the Bay,again Prices not steep at all. I contacted the owners of the Apartment several times before the holiday about several matters and general advice;My emails were replied to promptly, even once when they were on holiday themselves..very much appreciated! Do not hesitate in booking this Apartment,I hope to return in the near future.

Owner's reply: Yet again a lovely response. Thank you so much. Its always good when guests give detail because these are the things that matter! We look forward to welcoming you again Donald. Regards

Really excellent place! My wife and I enjoyed a much needed break here. This is a really well equipped apartment with an amazing private roof terrace and a shared pool. The beds are really comfy and the place is spotlessly clean. The harbour with excellent restaurants and bars is within walking distance down the avenue and there is also a good bus service which stops almost right outside. Getting to and from the airport was very easy to arrange. A great base to explore the island or just to stay put and relax in comfort. Highly recommended.

Owner's reply: Thanks for yet another lovely review! We are so glad you enjoyed yourselves and found our apartment to your liking and convenient for the sea front and harbour. We hope you will be able to visit again some day soon.

We had a very relaxing stay. The roof terrace was the selling point for me and certainly delivered. Lovely and quiet and fridge was great. Apartment is very well equipped if you wished to cook etc, but we only used kettle for morning cuppa. The bus to the harbour was always on time and bus stop only 2/3 minute walk away. We had to contact Tandy during our stay and response was prompt and problem solved. Only downside was the 25 minute walk down the motorway to the sea where we knew of a couple of nice restaurants and unfortunately the bus didn't go that way. Once again, thanks to Jill for ease of booking etc

Owner's reply: Thank you for your review . We need to correct two points 1. The apartment is nowhere near a motorway. It is situated in a quiet residential area. The route to the front which we take regularly is down a tree lined avenue and across the road which locals call the road to the 'Tombs of the Kings '.Then follow side streets to the front . Of course the amount of time this takes depends on your walking speed but we have done in 15mins. 2. The very regular and reasonable bus takes you to the harbour where there are myriad restaurants at all prices ( the famous fish restaurants can be seen in one of the pics) and are literally 5 mins from the bus . In the other direction the spectacular sea front restaurants await you. Again literally 5 minutes walk. Please be sure to view the map to get the exact location .Wevhope this helps future guests.
