AVEYRON ATTRACTIONS & THINGS TO DO.
No matter what your pleasure you will find somthing to keep you occupied in this beautiful and diverse area of France; whether it be relaxing in the sun, discovering the many historical sites, visiting the markets or extreme sports!
For all general information visit: http://www.tourisme-aveyron.com
FOR YOUR CHILDREN.... because happy children make happy holidays!
In the heart of the Aveyron not far from the truely magnificent Millau Bridge, designed by the French structural engineer Michel Virlogeux and British architect Norman Foster, it is the tallest bridge in the world and this fact alone is generally a lure for your children, as is 'Micropolis - cité des insects' a fascinating, fun and educational day out for all the family no matter the age. Visit the web site for all information at:
There are various places to take your children swimming, most communes have public swimming pools and everyone is welcome. (fees vary from place to place but none are expensive) To find out where they all are you can visit:
or ask us and we will direct you to all those we know!
There are also what is known as 'Plan d'Eaux' which are lakes where swimming and watersports are permitted, the biggest (not just in the Department of the Aveyron but in the whole of the Midi-Pyrenees Region) and by far the most popular of these is 'Le lac de Pareloup' near Salles Curan in the south Aveyron, the journey takes about an hour but is well worth it; take a picnic and make the day worthwhile....
If it is extreme sports that you are looking for (lots of grown ups enjoy this too!!), again there is a vast array of activities designed for those of a physically active nature ranging from kayaking on the Lot River or Climbing in the Gorges du Tarn to Paintballing and Accrobranching and much, much more.... There are many websites detailing these activites including the following :
Last but not least (and I have by no means covered everything here) I would like to mention the small town of Clairvaux, just a 20 minute drive from our holiday home, which hosts such a wealth of activities suitable for children of all ages you will be spoilt for choice!
Also at Clairvaux is a wonderful and very resonable family restaurant where a menu full of regional speciialities as well as meals designed for the less discerning palettes are catered for throughout the summer months.... We particularly enjoy the freindly atmosphere and the fact that children who are bored with the whole 'eating thing' are encouraged to wander about with the many different animals and birds that are kept there for just this purpose!
This restaurant is popular so it's not advisable to just turn up, there is no website but the phone number for reservations is 0565 72 71 40, if your French is not up to telephone conversations please ask and we will gladly help.
Cransac is famous throughout France for its Thermal station ( http://www.cransac.fr/thermalisme.html ), in the 1800's thousands of peaople visited the health spa each year due to the reputed healing properties of the water, including royalty!!
Today, the spa offers many treatments and is still frequented by clients the length and breadth of the country.
Aubin, once a thriving market town boasting over 40'000 inhabitants, is now a sleepy French village with just 4'000 people residing, most having left when the coal mines were closed in the 60's. The old town, where you will find a good restaurant (see link below) still attracts many visitors each summer and the Mining Museum (opposite 'Le Marie' is busy from May until October.

"A most peaceful retreat"
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here with my 2 children, albeit basic facilities it had everthing we needed for a comfortable and relaxing stay after a busy day exploring the area. Shops and good resturants within easy reach and the manager was extremely helpful with lots of advice and tips for places to visit. Local walks with breathtaking autumninal views really made it for us. I wouldn't hestitate to recommend.
We are pleased you enjoyed your stay and look forward to seeing you again in the future - Many Thanks
