Description from owner

The cottage has been renovated throughout, keeping all its charm and character with stone walls and original oak beams. Comfortable and spacious with French doors leading onto your own private patios, set in the 2 acre garden, swim or relax in the gorgeous pool area, surrounded by lush green countryside, the cottage now has unlimited free Wi-Fi,. Le Vieux Cerier is a little hamlet with a church and bar, local riding centre, 5 minutes drive from the quiet village of Champagne Mouton, where you will find all the essentials you will need. We are also only a 25 minute drive from Ruffec and Confolens, both being pretty towns with a full range of shops, bars and restaurants. Condac on the Charente River is also only a 20 minute drive, where you can swim, canoe, picnic BBQ or just relax.

The Poitou-Charentes region

The Charente is rightly famed for the beauty of its countryside, there are also some great towns to visit, including pretty Aubeterre - officially one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France - and its intriguing underground church, and Confolens, wonderfully situated on the River Vienne and host to an acclaimed international festival. And as so much of this region, the Charente landscape is studded with châteaux, including the impressive La Rochefoucauld château (open to visitors) and the château at Verteuil , scope for cycling, fishing and nature-based breaks.

The River Charente – conduit of the old cognac route in the past – offers plenty of scope for day trips on boats or longer trips on barges and river boats as well as canoeing and kayaking locally.

Again, you will have no problems finding things to see and do in this part of the Poitou-Charentes. This is where you find Cognac – both the town and the famous cognac drink (take a tour of a cognac house) – and the historic town of Angoulême with its historic, atmospheric town centre, great bars, restaurants, and nightlife.

Royan is a lovely seasside town with a fantastic seafood market, nearby is La Palmyre Zoo where there are 1,600 species, among them are several endangered species, such as the White Rhinoceros, which the zoo is helping to save with breeding programme. The lovely gardens of Jardins du Monde with electric boats to ride on and a butterfly house, is also a great day out. . La Rochelle on the coast is one of the most fascinating small cities in France, with a great location and harbour, excellent restaurants and lots of other tourist attractions too – such as the La Rochelle Aquarium and the Maritime Museum which is housed on historic ships.

Champagne Mouton

Champagne Mouton has a bank, post office, supermarket, petrol station, pharmacy and various other shops, a hotel, restaurant and bar, the village also has a small market on Tuesdays and Fridays.Famous Nanteuil has 2 excellent restaurants and Verteuil is very picturesque with great bars and restaurants both 15 mins drive from the property.. The village of Condac has a good restaurant, which used to be a mill, overlooking the River Charente. The restaurant has an amazing terrace which is open in the summer with great views to go with the great food served here, there is also a disco next door which opens at the weekend. Confolens is a very pretty medieval town which sits on the banks of the River Vienne. It also hosts a music festival in August, where you can experience all kinds of music and dancing from all over the world. Angouleme is a great place to visit with its vast array of bars and superb restaurants, its historic buildings and its fabulous shopping. There are also tours around the distilleries in Cognac, Futurescope at Poitiers, Vallee de Singes, golf velo rail and nautical activities at the lakes.

All in all there is something in this part of France to suit everyone. All the towns in the chosen photographs are within an easy 30 mins drive from the property.

Very Good

“Comfortable gite”

Reviewed 3 Jul 2013

This gite was just perfect for us and offered all we needed for our week in the Charente . Jude and Paul were so helpful and friendly and instantly made you feel very welcome and comfortable. The gite had all the character you would want and the french doors provided loads of natural light. We enjoyed making use of the sunny outdoor area for eating out or just relaxing and the pool was perfect for cooling off. We found the people in the area so friendly and welcoming and we loved the region. This is a great location to explore this beautiful area.

“Friendly relaxing holiday”

Reviewed 18 May 2013

We stayed at "Le Vieux Cerier" for 2 weeks in order to prospect for a house to buy in the region. We enjoyed staying at the cottage, it was very peaceful and we made good use of the bikes and walked many of the well marked paths in the area. Paul and Jude were very friendly and helpful and it was through them that we found our "dream house". It was a shame though about the weather which was unseasonably cold and wet. The cottage provided all amenities and there is a supermarket not far away. The historic towns of Confolens and Verteuil are well worth visiting and easily reached by car..
