Location description from owner

The Umbria region

At the geographical centre of Italy, Umbria is 'the Green Heart of Italy'. It is easily reachable for the Adriatic and Mediterranean Coasts as well as world-famous cities like Rome, Florence, Sienna, Assisi, Pisa, etc.

Add to this, Umbria's famously fine cuisine, numerous exuberant festivals, its inimitable art, culture and architecture, and the incomparable time-honoured Italian welcome, you'll definitely want to return to La Serena in Umbria time and time again!
Nestled between Tuscany, Marche and Lazio, Umbria has fantastic variety in its beautiful and dramatic landscape.

Enjoy a relaxing holiday amidst rolling hills, vineyards and olive groves. Umbria's historic cities are living museums of art and architecture, bursting with exuberance and celebrating that reknowned Italian love of fine food, wine and beauty.

Some of Italy's most distinctive medieval towns are to be found in the hill towns of Umbria. Perugia, a 20 minute drive from "La Serena". is its largest, most cosmopolitan city, with dozens of galleries and wonderful Italian shopping. It is also famous for it's great Chocolate Festival, and the world famous Umbria Jazz festival. Orvieto boasts a proud Etruscan history and an unrivaled Gothic cathedral. Assisi, famous as the birthplace of St. Francis and for its magnificent basilica, is one of Umbria's essential sites. Spoleto also has a magnificent cathedral but also two world famous arts festivals and famous ancient aqueduct.
Between these larger towns are a host of charming and evocative towns like Deruta (home of Majolica ceramics), Bevagna ('Gaite' Ancient Crafts Fair), Todi (Antiques Fair), Spello ('Infiorata', the festival of flower decoration), Montefalco (famous for its textiles and wine), Trevi and Amelia, which make perfect excuses for a drive amidst the spectacular scenery of Umbria.

Florence, Siena, Rome, the Mediterranean and Adriatic coasts and winter skiing in the Apennines are within a 2 hour drive!

Umbria is also famous for it's local feste - festivals. Umbria Jazz enlivens Perugia in the summer and Orvieto in the winter. Spoleto is the home of the Festival of Two Worlds (Festival Dei Due Mondi) one of Europe's longest running arts and music festivals. More recently TodiArte has brought festival culture to Todi's summer, while culture of another sort is celebrated each Autumn at Perugia's chocolate festival.

Along with its art festivals Umbrians celebrate a rich variety of historical festivals. gubbio hosts two of the most famous, the Corsa dei Cieri or the Race of the Candles and a crossbow tournament the Palio della Balestra, but almost every Umbrian village stages its own. Montefalco's Fuga de Bova and Foligno's Jousts of the Quintana are typical of these medieval pageants which celebrate Umbria's past with historical re-enactments, costume parades and games.

Castiglione della Valle

Lake Trasimeno is the 4th largest lake in Italy, but has the largest surface area. Surrounded by rolling hills, Lake Trasimeno is one of the region's main tourist attractions, offering a broad selection of facilities from ports to beaches, and lots of restaurants. The area of the lake included in the Parco Regionale Lago Trasimeno includes a stretch of land at the water's edge and extends to towns rich in history such as Passignano sul Trasimeno, Tuoro sul Trasimeno and Magione. Also worth visiting are the towns of Castiglione del Lago; Città della Pieve; Paciano; Panicale; Piegaro.

Lake Trasimeno is ideal for bathing with 9 well-kept beaches, where you can also hire rowing boats and wind-surfers. You can also take advantage of sailing schools, water skiing and wind surfing lessons. The water is warm from April to September and is analysed regularly to test for purity.

Around the lake you can also find 3 swimming pools, a golf course, horse riding, tennis and large open spaces for various outdoor pursuits.

The Trasimeno Navigation Service runs a regular ferry service between the major towns on the lakeside and the 3 islands in the lake.
