Carpignano Salentino:

Carpignano Salentino close to the sea, especially near the beach with the beautiful natural Alimini lakes, near also the famous Otranto, which is linked with by a direct route (without passing through intermediate towns, so very easy), and Torre Dell'Orso Sant'Andrea, it will amaze you with its welcoming inhabitants, peace, relaxation, dining with excellent cuisine, factors that have made it a tourist destination. Very old municipality of the Basso Salento has a large feud surrounding (among the older of the place, frequent the archaeological finds as excavations result). The town of peasant origin, is in a strategic position, therefore, is experiencing strong growth and is often preferred due to its proximity to the beaches and the best quality / price ratio compared to the seaside resorts. The expansion involves both tourist and productive aspects, there are in fact different settlements mainly artisanal . Carpignano Salentino has a beautiful historic center, with a network of lanes, connecting the square with clock tower, the Old Church that branch for reconnecting with the inner ring road, covering the ancient inhabited nucleus. The extension of the feud surrounding favored farming and breeding; it is no coincidence that here important trade shows and features take place, such as 'The Fair of All Saints' in the "All Saints" Day. Another very popular event is 'la festa te lu mieru' (wine festival), held the first weekend of September in the entire municipality. The appointment, a must for Salentini, takes 3 days and attracts visitors from all over the heel, partly because it is a very old festival, one of the first festivals of the Great Salento. Another event to remember is the heineken festival, with participation of local and Italian band, a major musical event. There are also numerous events held in the Live Music Arena, a large room in the industrial area, constantly enlivened by concerts and clubbing. Among the eateries, we can mention 'La Locanda' and 'Zia Maria', which have agreement with us, you will receive a treat and a 10% discount with our membership card . Carpignano Salentino is part of the belt of towns in the Salentine Greece, organizers and promoters of the famous 'Notte della Taranta'.

Carpignano Salentino

HISTORY AND BACKGROUND of Carpignano Salentino
Before seing part of the history of the town, we briefly describe a curiosity about Colombaia Tower: This tower houses inside a large number of pigeons. The tower with cylindrical base is internally composed of many cells, where these birds live and nest. The reason why there is an architectural example of this kind, very common in ancient times in Salento, be sought in the necessities of the local population, to have food and fertile land. The pigeons, on one side are a great source of protein (they were taken at night from the cells, during sleep),on the other they produce high amounts of excrement, a good fertilizer for the fields. The double meaning has therefore created the union. The presence of man in Carpignano Salentino date back to ancient times, and this is evidenced by the presence of some menhirs: the menhir Grassi and the menhir Croce Grande or Staurotomèa. Recently in the historical center has been found a tomb dating back several thousand years before Christ, so very old. The territory was certainly subject to Roman rule, the center in fact stands along the old road axis Trajan Calabra. After the Byzantine domination of Salento, Carpignano belonged to the Thema of Longobardia founded in about 892. Of the period, remains the important Byzantine Crypt of Santa Cristina, with frescoes dating from the tenth century. In the Norman period, the hamlet was granted as a feud and later with the advent of the Angevins saw a succession of feudal families, among which stood out the Del Balzo in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. In 1574 came under the control of people who remained until 1604 when the estate was purchased by Fabrizio Lanario. From 1663 until the early nineteenth century belonged to the Ghezzi Dukes. During the Kingdom of Italy was the seat of the county district. According to a widespread but not very plausible interpretation the town's name derives from the one of the Roman centurion Carpinius on the model of other toponyms traced to the name of Roman leaders considered their founders. In fact, the most supported thesis is a derivation of the root Messapian Karp ("stone" "rock"), so Carpignano mean "point located on a hill."
