Location description from owner

The Scotland region

Nestling in the rolling countryside of southernmost Lanarkshire, Ampherlaw enjoys outstanding views in all directions, but most notably to the south over Tinto Hill - a lovely morning or afternoon's walk.

The area has an exceptional wealth of historical and archaeological sites, and the nearby villages and towns of Carnwath, Biggar and Lanark reflect this with their interesting small museums and landmarks. The town of Biggar lies 8 miles to the south and hosts a range of independent shops, galleries and the famous Puppet Theatre. There are also some lovely independent restaurants and country pubs here.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of New Lanark lies only a few minutes' drive away and is a 'must see' while you are visiting the area.

For a bit of retail therapy, Livingston Designer Outlet is a 20 minute drive away and boasts many designer labels at greatly reduced prices. Livingston also houses our nearest multi screen cinema and numerous restaurants.

Edinburgh and Glasgow are only a stone's throw away for those staying a little longer.

When all your exploring is done, Ampherlaw offers a relaxing end to the day with its roaring stove and tranquil surroundings.

“What a find!”

Reviewed 9 Nov 2016

The facilities and welcome from Cass at Ampherlaw Farmhouse were outstanding. We stayed in six self-contained cottages during our recent visit to UK and they ranged from 'good' to 'excellent'. Ampherlaw was tops! Let's be honest - Carnwath itself is nothing to write home about. But there are such beautiful places to visit in the area, Biggar, New Lanark and Peebles being outstanding examples. Do remember though, you MUST have a car.

Thank you so much for your lovely review. I am delighted to hear that you found Ampherlaw to be the best self catering cottage that you have stayed in in the UK - what an accolade! The towns and villages that surround us are beautiful and we are so close to Edinburgh and Glasgow that guests find Ampherlaw the perfect base for exploring. Yes, a car is a must living 3 miles from the nearest town, although there are train links available close by to get to Edinburgh and Glasgow for those who prefer not to drive into the cities. Thank you again for staying with us, and we are so glad that you enjoyed your visit.

“Peaceful and relaxing stay.”

Reviewed 21 Aug 2016

We simply loved our time at the farm house. Cass and Charlie are excellent hosts. The accommodation is simply beautiful. The local towns make an interesting visit and the shopping centre at Livingstone is enough to satisfy any retail junkie! We would love to return and stay again.

Thank you so much for your lovely review of your stay at Ampherlaw Farmhouse. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay. We would love to have you back!
