The Dalmatia region

The view out to sea is dominated by the islands Brac and Hvar, both of which are accessible by ferry from either Makarska or Split (or even the popular 'fish picnic' boats that leave Baska Voda for day trips every day). Hvar is a very popular destination of the rich and famous, has a beautiful port and is the source of some of the better 'plavac mali' grape variety wines of the area.

The mountain which peaks behind Baska Voda at St. Ilija (1600m) is part of the Biokovo range and dominates the Dalmatian region. Activities on the mountain include hiking and mountain biking...however caution is strongly advised as with any mountain.

Perhaps the most famous of Croatian cities, Dubrovnik, is within reach of a day trip from Baska Voda by both bus and hire car. The Bus journey takes around 3 hrs and any trip requires a passport as there is a short journey over a Bosnian bridge! The time taken to get to Dubrovnik however is richly rewarded as the ancient walled city is rightly world famous. Other similar but smaller medieval walled towns (the Venetians had a habit of coming down the coast with bad attitude!) include Trogir - 20 km west of Split, Korchula - on the island of the same name, likewise Hvar. All of which are world heritage sites.

Krka National Parkis also do-able as a day trip. These are worth accessing via the river boat, and expect jaw droppingly beautiful lakes, waterfalls and industry from the medieval times being demonstrated using the water power.

Mostar is also a town worth a vist, it is a medieval town with strong middle eastern influences in architecture and food. A magnificant bridge dominates the old town, off which local heroes jump from for a few euros! The charm and beauty of this famous area certainly make this a worthwhile day out.

Baska Voda

Baska Voda is one of the oldest holiday destinations in the Makarska region of Dalmatia. The people who live here orginally had their homes higher up the mountian where they cultivated their crops amongst the hand made terraces which can still be seen today. However once modern tourism began to take advantage of the benefits that a beautiful beach has to offer, Baska Voda was immeadiately an obvious destination!

Now Baska Voda has excellent recreation and dining experiences, and a number of world heritage sites within reach of the adventurous daytripper. There are extensive beaches in Baska Voda itself which also extend for many miles up and down the coast which make for amazing scenic evening walks. A famous spot in nearby Brela simply known as 'The Brela Rock' is well worth a walk to. Sunset is an amazing time and Brela also has good food should you require dinner on the way back!

Should you want to break up the endless hours of relaxing on the beach, Baska Voda has plenty of activities to offer both in the town itself and in the the local area. Water sports are obviously close to hand and the variety of choice can be bewildering from jetskis and parasailing to scuba diving for the novice and up, and a submarine! (well...sort of!)

An excellent day out can be had white water rafting on the River Cetina. The trip is easily arranged through the local tourist office, ask for an arrangement to have 'Peka' at a local konoba (Inn) after the rafting. This is a traditional roast lamb meal and well worth trying.

Restaurants can be found either in the town itself or even amongst the pine woodland that extends down to the shoreline offering simple pizza's (although with local ingrediants are as good or better the the Italian originals!) to BBQ'd fish.
