The Lake Como region

Lake Como has been famous and popular for centuries, due to its unrivaled beauty. It is still popular today for many more reasons: It is within striking distance of many interesting places - Milan, Monza, St Moritz and Lugano, to name just a few. It offers something for every type of holidaymaker from the sporty to chill-out to culture-vulture with water sports, golf, horse-riding, stunning villas and historic churches, shopping to die for (ask for our designer outlet guide), wine tastings, gourmet restaurants and some of the best pizzas you will ever taste at only €4 for a pizza margherita, you can't go wrong! It is also home to the island of Comacina and one of the most famous restaurants on the Lake, visited by everyone from Eisenhower to Clooney.

Argegno

Argegno, 20km from Como

A popular destination for tourists, Argegno is situated in a large inlet on the western shore of Lake Como at the mouth of the Val d’Intelvi. It has a pleasant climate and is mild even in the winter months. With its’ beautiful panoramic location, one can see from the headland of Bellagio to the north and as far as Nesso towards the south.

Argegno offers a surprising amount of facilities for a quaint lakeside fishing village – 5 good restaurants/pizzerias, 2 excellent wine bars (Enoteca and Bar Colombo), serving free snacks at aperitivo time every day. There are 2 banks with cash points and a small store. And you won’t be able to resist Andrea’s home-made ice creams (made with whatever is available fresh that day, including cucumber!). The scent of the bakery will draw you up the narrow alleyways to find fresh brioche (croissants) and bread, baked daily on the premises by Louisa. Buy fresh vegetables from Mario and ask him for one of his superb recipes – always served with smile and he speaks excellent English. If that wasn’t enough, the village also now boasts a beautician and 2 hairdressers!

Argegno is also within striking distance of all Lake Como’s treasures, as it is a main bus and ferry stop-off point for the rest of the lake. Villa Balbianello (Star Wars & James Bond) is just around the corner, Villa Carlotta a short ferry ride away, as are Bellagio, Menaggio and Varenna – get a centre lake ticket and visit all three in one day. The village is certainly of Roman origin, as it owes its’ name to the consul Publio Cesio Archigene. At one time Argegno was part of a defensive system, which extended as far as the ancient villa of Lenno and the Isola Comacina to obstruct the passage of invaders. The village is certainly of Roman origin, as it owes its’ name to the consul Publio Cesio Archigene.

At one time Argegno was part of a defensive system, which extended as far as Lenno and the Isola Comacina to obstruct the passage of invaders. The ancient centre of the village is very picturesque. It is crossed by the Telo stream and is divided into two parts, which are joined by an old stone bridge with a lancet arch.

It is possible to take a cable car up to Pigra (881 m), which is situated on a plateau with a beautiful view of the lake. From here it is possible to go on to the Valle della Camoggia, which is in the oasis of Argegno-Cima della Duaria, a conservation area. The road which runs along Val d’Intelvi also starts from Argegno and about 15 km along it one comes to Lanzo.

Things to see

The Sanctuary of Sant’Anna
This was built in the seventeenth century but it was subsequently renovated. Inside one can find stuccowork and frescoes from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

The Oratory of San Rocco in Pigra
Built in the fifteenth century, it contains frescoes from 1662 signed by S. Pozzi.

“Five star birthday location”

Reviewed 14 Jun 2015

We spent the first week of June in Lilla Villa to celebrate an anniversary. Villa Lilla was oustanding from the living point of view. The lakeview is second to none. The location of the Villa is good and you can easily reach both Switzerland, Belagio, Como and Milano to name a few. Having a car is almost a necessity if you want to tour around the lake. The owners, Beverley and Jonathan, were very helpful and service oriented. It seemed to us that they genuinly wanted their guests to have a great time at the Villa.

We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay. Thank you so much for taking the time to review Villa Lilla. It is important to us that you had a good time and we do everything we can to ensure that.

“Very friendly accomodating staff, beautiful place”

Reviewed 10 Jun 2015

Our flight was delayed by 3 hours and despite the already late check in the villa Lilla staff were happy to accommodate out arrival at 2am and even organised a light grocery shop for an impromptu midnight snack. Jonathan was very friendly and helpful and made us feel right at home. The villa itself was very impressive large enough to accommodate our large party with some spectacular picture opportunities - a home away from home. Will definitely consider the villa again especially as it so versatile with the option of taking extra apartments for larger parties

Thank you so much for taking the time to review Villa Lilla - we are so happy that it met with your expectations. Thank you for your positive feedback. It is important to us to know that our guests had a great holiday.

“Stunning view over lake como, it is true what they write!”

Reviewed 25 Jul 2013

Thank you Beverley and Jonathan, we had a great stay at Villa Lilla. Your welcome was Heartwarming and very informative. Villa Lilla is a beautiful house on a wonderful location with stunning views. Terras excelent, althaugh during summertime you need a parasol. Livingroom and kitchen OK, nice view again. Kitchen equipment sufficient. Sleeps 8 persons, masterbedroom great. 4 persons sleeps in the basement, might be a bit gloomy and dark, but use it for only sleeping it's OK. Driving to VillaLilla needs some courage, it is really very steep, so bring a powerful car. Shopping in Argegno, for bread and small stuff its nice, but if you want to cook a real meal, go for shopping at Bennet's shoppingcenter, Como Nord. One might argue that that the price might be high during the high-season, but in comparison with other rentals this Villa is value for money. This Villa is a good option for two small families. We sure will come back, its a great place to stay!,

So glad that you enjoyed your stay with us. Thank you for your review.

“Wonderful stay in Argegno at Lake Como”

Reviewed 22 Oct 2012

We stayed one week in this fantastic villa above the pictures town Argegno. It was to cold to use the pool, but in summer it must be very nice to have a swim and at the same time viewing beautiful Lake Como. The house is nicely furnished and you have the nice view from both living room and bedroom. The master bathroom was fantastic with a large bath. Only minus is the steep road up to the house, but you get use to it. We were happy that we were driving our 4W car. Make sure you visit Villa D´Este for a lunch or dinner at La Veranda, and have a walk in their park. Such a nice place. Can also recommend to visit Bellagio, Lenno, Mennagio, Tremozza, Como and of course Argegno

Thank you very much for taking the time to review the apartment. We are so glad that you had a wonderful holiday and we would love to see you again next year - book early though!

“Just as we expected, and more!”

Great views, lovely villa, spotlessly clean. Lovely area, plenty of great places to visit, good restaurants, hire a car to get the best out of the area.

“Lovely luxury villa with pool and incredible views!”

Reviewed 15 Jun 2012

Villa Lilla is a gorgeous large villa situated above the pretty village of Argegno on Lake Como. It is beautifully decorated and equipped with everything you could possibly need. The owners couldn't be nicer and are wonderfully accommodating. Perfect for a large family or couples travelling together. Strongly advise a car since the Villa is a fairly steep walk from Argegno which is a hub of ferry and bus transportation . We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!!

“Stunning location, amazing lake views, the perfect villa”

Reviewed 3 May 2012

it was a truly fantastic experience. The views were truly amazingly panoramic and the pool just seemed to merge into the lake below. The accommodation was perfect - with everything we could possibly need for a restful holiday. The place was so peaceful - with 180 degree lake views AND mountain views to die for! It was so good, we hardly ever left the poolside! The owners had thought of everything - BBQ, pool towels, plenty of sunbeds, umbrellas and the place was so well kitted out - very interior-designy, but cosy at the same time.
