Location description from owner

The Dordogne region

This area is a lovely part of the Dordogne which is often overlooked for the area nearer the Dordogne river but it has just as much, if not more, to offer than that area and is less commercialised. With the peaceful River Dronne meandering it's way through the lovely town of Riberac where you can hire canoes to explore the river - the Dronne also goes through the beautfiful towns of Brantome, known as the Venice of the Perigord region and Aubeterre which is officially one of the prettiest villages in France. There is plenty to do from canoeing to tree walking - there are beautiful safe river beaches at Aubeterre and St. Aulaye and there are with water slides at St. Aulaye. Both have riverside cafes and toilets or enjoy a stroll through the villages and enjoy the cafes and restaurants available. There is also the fantastic lakeside beach at Lake Jemaye offering water sports, free kayaks for 30 minutes and woodland trails for welcome shade in the heat of the sun or just relax at one of the cafe's at the lake edge.

All the beaches have lifeguards during the peak season and the water is regularly checked for bathing. There are children's playgrounds at all of them and they are just great places that all the family can enjoy and relax at.

Allemans

Chauffour is located approximately 3kms inbetween the villages of St. Severin and Allemans where you can find bakeries, bars, postoffice, supermarket and lots more. You can walk or cycle from the doorstep on peaceful roads or follow the Cicuit of Roman Churches from Allemans and beyond. If you enjoy walking then the river is less than 2kms away where there is a weir and a lovely place to have a picnic or you can hire a canoe from Riberac or Aubeterre and meander your way along the River Dronne.

Aubeterre is officially one of the prettiest villages in France and hosts lots of lovely restaurants and cafes to soak up the french ambience. Aubeterre has a river beach so set up your chair next to the river and enjoy a good book. There are also beaches at St. Aulaye where there is also treewalking and waterslides. The beautiful Lake Jemaye also has a lovely beach and watersports and is a haven for wildlife. Enjoy a walk through the shady woods or just relax at one of the lakeside cafes.

The old water mill at Poltrot has tree walking for all ages and a free course for toddlers. There is a lovely café and Poltrot also holds local evening produce markets where you can buy and cook your own food and enjoy the lovely atmosphere. There is normally an open air cinema on these evenings too. Many of the local villages also hold similar markets and evening art markets and weekly Sunday antique and "empty your loft" markets which are great to browse around. There is normally fresh bread and local produce on sale too.

“A lovely place to stay”

Reviewed 8 Sep 2015

A large house set in a small hamlet. The pool was great for the kids to burn off some energy. Ask Malcolm for some bikes and explore the local villages & cafes. Nearby towns had plenty of shops for supplies. A short drive took us to river beaches, lakes, churches built into caverns, crazy golf, kayaking. Alternatively, with a TV, Wi-Fi and a great kitchen there was plenty of facilities if you wanted to stay in the shade.
