A very special place to stay with authentic Greek hospitality
This stay was one of the highlights of our holiday in Greece, where we stayed in many different places, mainly because of the personal input of the owners, Betty and Ilias. Right from the moment I started enquiries about the property, until we left, we felt like we were visiting friends, even though we had never met before.
Betty emailed us excellent instructions on how to get there (because we arrived the unusual way, by public bus): we phoned Ilias when we arrived from the local supermarket in Lefkogeia, and Ilias was there in 5 minutes with his pick-up, truck, loading our backpacks, and whisking us off to the apartment (which turned out to be a 2 minute walk from the supermarket. He then invited us to the farm they own on the outskirts of town, and we were treated to a personal tour of the property, meeting all the animals, etc. While sitting on their front porch, drinking raki, Betty came home, and we spent another hour or so, getting to know this lovely couple.
Betty has a university education from Athens and studied English. She has an excellent command of the language. Ilias, likewise, is very capable in English: he used to run a dive school in Athens and has lots of experience dealing with tourists. Together, they told us many interesting things about life in Lefkogeia, life on Crete, and life in Greece in general. This was the first time we had been able to engage with Greeks to such an extent, because there are few we met with such a good command of English.
We were treated to more of their hospitality during our short stay in Lefkogeia, and were really sorry when we had to leave, as it was like saying goodbye to lifelong friends!
Getting to the apartment: it is a gem! Set in a narrow alleyway, with Greek neighbours, it is an old building which has been lovingly and innovatively renovated by Ilias and decorated by Betty. The kitchen had all the equipment, pots, pans, cutlery, etc that one could wish for, and we were able to cook a few of our meals. That's because we were on a tight budget. The local Tavernas were excellent and very reasonably priced and we can highly recommend eating there too.The romantic bedroom was up on the top floor. It had a big balcony overlooking the town and surrounding mountains. I loved lying in bed listening to the swallows and the goats' bells and church bells in the mornings.
We did great hikes while there: one epic one along the gorge to Palm Beach (ask Ilias for directions) and several over the hills at the back of Lefkogeia down to the beautiful beaches in the vicinity. We snorkelled and saw some lovely reef fish while there. The waters were clean and beautifully clear. I highly recommend the museum in the nearby village dedicated to Papa Michalis for a deeper understanding of the yesteryear of Crete and the facts about the German invasion during WW2. …
Villa Despina 1
Friendly, sunny Crete
We spent nearly a month there. There were 3 families with 3 kids. We tried to find a place suitable for a group like this (separate bedroom with bathrooms, big kitchen and a dining room). There was enough space for a noisy company. The surrounding territory is spacey and not dangerous for playing. The villa is clean, well equipped and situated in a place without any other building. The owners are hospitable, kind and very friendly people ready to come and help 24 hours a day. every time we needed something they were eager to do a favor for us (buy a wheel for the car, find a doctor for a baby, clean the house, phone someone). Thanks a lot for everything. The food was home made and fresh for a reasonable price.
As for the beaches, one will need a car to reach the nearest. But they are really worth visiting. The sea is clean and warm and beaches are not overcrowded. I think is not my last visit there. Oh, yes, the price paid is really good))) …
Villa 5 Anemoi, let us travel you to the past century!
Perfect house, perfect holiday!
We were a party of six staying for one week. We were met by Betty who showed us the house and made us welcome. We had already shared several emails prior to the trip and by the time we met it felt like we were meeting an old friend.
We all loved the house with it's great charm and character but didn't take advantage of all it offered. We never set foot in the sitting or dining room neither did we venture into the lawned garden area but these facilities would be great in not so good weather. There was a shady central courtyard area with a large table and chairs and this is where we congregated to sit and plan our day have breakfast, read, play cards and relax and chat with a drink or two.
The kitchen was well equipped and as three keen cooks in the party we intended to cater more for ourselves but ended up mostly eating out in the local tavernas, all of which were good. We did buy lots of fish one night which we cooked on the gas BBQ.
The village is lovely and worth exploring the little lanes and saying hello to the locals as well as using the local mini market and cafés.
An evening spent at the farm of Betty and Ellias was one we will remember, where we were treated to great hospitality and lots of laughs while watching the glorious sun set behind the mountains in stunning surroundings.
This was a special holiday spent with my family and it certainly didn't disappoint but was sadly too short and I wished I had booked longer.
We explored the local beaches where we swam in crystal clear seas and ventured into Retymno and Spilli but other than that we didn't do much, didn't go far..........perfect!
Betty we will return!Xx …
Lovely cottage on a farm! Only 3 min drive distance from 4 magnificent beaches!
you can´t find a nicer one
We confirm everything written in the first review. The Farm was outstanding to stay at and our granddaughter loved every single animal. In the mornings we had a wonderful breakfast on the porch overlooking the farm. Betty and Elias were very welcoming and helpful.
One highligt was a wonderful barbecue together. We would recommend this place to couples with children very much. Our kids and our granddaughter called it one of their best holidays ever.
Now we would like to try the villa in lefkogia too.
