The Austrian Alps / Salzburgerland / Salzburgerland region

For those of you who have only ever skied or holidayed in France, Austria will be a revelation.

Zell am See/Kaprun is a paradise for skiers and boarders of all ages, sizes and abilities, with 132 km of downhill runs on the 'Shmittenhohe' at Zell & the 'Kitzsteinhorn' glacier at nearby Kaprun.

For the more experienced skiier there are over 40km of black runs, while for the less daring there are easy blues and a mix of easy & more challenging reds to help build your skills.

Boarders are spoilt for choice with huge, wide pistes, loads of off-piste opportunities, natural halfpipes and the new 30000m2 'Snowpark'. Cross Country fans have over 200km of trails available including a 5km night trail.

And if you tire of all this, there are over 15 other resorts within just 30km of the Chalet.

But probably the best thing about being here is the sheer beauty and character of the place. Traditional Austrian towns and villages are a delight in Winter or Summer, the scenery is just stunning and the people are great.

There is so much to do here and it's such a beautiful place to be.

Zell Am See area

The Chalet is located in a quiet cul-de-sac in Schuttdorf, the residential suberb of Zell am See and the site of the main ski lifts for the Zell area. The lifts are just 800m from the chalet and we offer inclusive transport to the lifts in our own private vehicle.

The Skiing is great, with something for all abilities at the local slopes and at nearby Kaprun where you can ski on the glacier all year round!. Plus within 30km of Chalet Gretl are a further 15 ski resorts.

A 5 minute walk from the chalet are; the local facilities of Schuttdorf inc. shops, restaurants, pubs, banks etc; the xc skiing, walking, rollerskating and bike trails; and the lake with sailing, swimming, windsurfing and parascending.

The golf club is a 5 minute drive as is the town of Zell with its many shops, icerink, swimming pool and other facilities.

There are some superb walks, many of which are on the well kept trails in the valley and around the lake.

How to get there

Salzburg airport is only 80km from Chalet Gretl.

www.thomsonfly.co.uk ; www.easyjet.co.uk ; www.ryanair.co.uk are all good choices for cheap flights.

Public Transport is very good in Austria. From the Airport buses go straight to Zell am See (1 hr 20) or bus to Salzburg station (15 mins) and train to Zell (1 hr 15 express, 1 hr 45 stopper).

NB included in the cost of your stay is free courtesy transport to the local ski lifts/golf course in our own private vehicle. Shops, restaurants, banks & pubs are a 5 minute walk from the Chalet.

Cars can be hired at the airport. Best to prebook. I've found www.auto-europe.com to be best and cheapest.
From the airport it's an easy and beautiful 1hr drive to the chalet.

Further details

Chalet Gretl was bought by two brothers, who got tired of the typical high prices & low standards of holiday hotels, chalets and apartments.

We are keen skiers (downhill and xcountry), road and mountain bikers, runners, skaters and walkers. Any details you require regarding your particular activity, ski conditions etc we will do our best to provide.

Our live in Chalet maid will welcome you to the chalet, look after you throughout your stay and provide you with local information.

Our aim is to make your holiday as comfortable, pleasurable and easy as possible, allowing you to just relax and enjoy yourselves, knowing that at the end of a tough day on the slopes, (or golf course or bike trails etc), you are coming back to good food and drink in your own luxuriously appointed chalet.

We love it here, I'm sure you will too.

Conditions

Chalet Gretl is a non-smoking environment (for smokers there are 3 balconies, terrace and garden). Sorrry no pets are allowed but children of any age are welcome and 2 cots and high chairs are available.
