Further details outdoors:
Ample parking is available with a garage that can provide shelter for motorcycles or pedal cycles if requested in advance.
There is an inner gated garden of approximately quarter of an acre to enjoy. The 17 acres of privately owned croft land is also there to be enjoyed and can be accessed from gates on either side of the garden. Each access provides a unique way to enter and explore the croft. Either go through the righthand side gate looking out over Stein and down along the slope next to the neighbouring highland cattle, or through the lefthand gate, carefully accross the top of burn, past the ruins and down the farside, crossing the burn once again in the middle - over the top of the waterfall - or down the croft by the meandering burn ...your choice! Whichever you choose, whatever the weather, you will have an amazing experience which will vary every time you do it! If you are feeling bold you could even try clambering down under the waterfall and paddle in the pool! But please be careful - and supervise children near the steep sides of the gorge/waterfall.
You can enter Lusta seashore from the gate at the far bottom right and side of the croft. The shore is rocky so take care.
Further details
Electricity
Please turn off radiators/towel rails when not required – electricity on Skye is very expensive but we would like to maintain our policy of not charging separately for heating to keep the letting process as free from admin as possible for you
Pets
Well-behaved dogs (maximum of two) are welcome by prior arrangement at a charge of £20 per week per dog.
No other pets allowed without prior permission.
Please do not let your dog on any furniture/chairs/beds and provide your own dog bedding. A dog stainless steel water bowl is stored under the sink in the kitchen.
Dogs must not be left in the property unsupervised as this can result in considerable damage to the property and distress to the pet.
The inner garden (approx. 0.25 acre) is sheep fenced and with all three gates shut is safe for most dogs. However, the actual croft land (approx. 17 acres) outside the garden fence ususally supports a herd of rare Hebridean sheep. You are welcome to walk your dogs here but please keep them on leads well away from the sheep.
Please ensure you pick up any dog mess from the inner garden and dispose of it in plastic bags in the dustbin.
Smoking
Please do not smoke in any part of the house or conservatory. (Obviously if you do smoke outside please dispose of any butts safely in the dustbin.)

Enquire nowThe Hebrides / Skye / Isle of Skye region
The Isle of Skye (“The Misty Isle”) is an island of outstanding natural beauty situated of the west coast of mainland Scotland and is the largest and best known of the Inner Hebrides.
The Cuillin Hills, The Old Man of Storr and the Quirang have long been favourites with climbers and walkers alike. The fascinating indented coastline also means you are never far from the sea. Naturally, both mountains and sea provide a haven for wildlife which abounds on the Island. There are frequent sightings of seals, porpoise, dolphin by the ever near shores, with rarer sights of otters, basking sharks and whales. Whilst Sea Eagles are plentiful and even magnificent Golden Eagles have been spotted with some regularity.
The native language is Scottish Gaelic, although 99% of the spoken word heard is English.
Ferries to the Outer Isle (Lewis, Harris & North Uist) run regularly from Uig, just a 30 minute drive from Lusta cottage and guests often continue their holiday by taking in a trip to another beautiful Scottish island.
Portree, the capital of Skye is approx. 20 miles (25 minutes by car) and here you will find shops, a busy harbour, numerous cafes and restaurants and a modern library with internet access and an excellent swimming pool located in the High School and open to the public. Annually in August the Skye Highland Games are held in Portree when the town becomes alive with the sound of the bagpipes! This is a great day out and well worth a visit.
The Waternish / Lochbay area
Waternish is a fabulous place to use either as your base for exploring Skye or simply for enjoying the local amenities and relaxing in the peace and tranquility of the area. It is the central of the most prominent peninsulas to project north west into the Minch. It is an extremely pretty area with much croftland and forestry overlooking stunning sea views at every turn.
There are several places within a few miles of Lusta Cottage that are worth a visit. These include "Fairy Bridge" dating from the early 1800's and apparently named because it was believed to be the haunt of fairies ......we always say "Hello" to them as we pass the bridge anyway........rumour has it that the Chief MacLeod was given the famous "Fairy Flag" by his fairy wife (before she left him returning to her own people) to be waved only three times if the MacLeod Clan were in danger. The flag has been waved on two occasions and is now kept in Dunvegan Castle.
At nearby Trumpan (5 minute drive from Lusta Cottage) you will find the remains of Trumpan Church where almost the entire Waternish population were massacred in the church in 1578 as a result of clan warfare between the MacLeods and the MacDonalds from the neighbouring island of Uist in the Outer Hebrides. There is a fantastic viewing area opposite here where you can enjoy superb sunsets. The churchyard itself has to be one of the most spectacular places to be buried in the world!
Nearby you will find the path leading to the Waternish lighthouse for those of you who enjoy walking.
Leaving Waternish, it is only a short 15 minute drive to the village of Dunvegan where you will find the magnificent Dunvegan Castle, home to the MacLeod Clan. The Castle and its beautiful gardens are open to the public and well worth a visit. There are also small seal boat trips that can be taken from here (one of our annual favourites!) and fishing trips that can also be organised from here. Parts of the castle can also be hired for social events and weddings. It is also possible to drive from here along the banks of Loch Dunvegan and then walk a reasonably short distance by foot until you come to the beautiful Coral Sands beach.
The social focal point of Waternish is easily the Stein Inn, just a short walk down the Lusta cottage croft. There are also local Ceildhs (Scotttish Dancing and live music) held several times during the year at Waternish Village Hall.
We are very fortunate to have both the Stein Inn and the Loch Bay Sea food restaurant within walking distance from the cottage (approx. 0.75 mile by road or a 10minute walk down the croft). The Stein serves excellent food in their splendid bar area as well as in their non- smoking restaurant. The Loch Bay Sea food restaurant is a family business run by David & Alison and is renowned on the island for its sea food specialities. Reservations are recommended for both. The Stein also has a very pleasant pub garden which fronts the loch – perfect for watching sunsets over the bay.
Our good friends Ian and Gill Williams at Braefasach, Waternish have also just opened a small café within their art gallery serving tea, coffee and homemade cake!
Shops
There are no food shops, or indeed any shops at Waternish except for art and craft shops/galleries (see below)
Sunday Papers can be ordered in advance from the Stein Inn!
Portree has the recently opened CoOp slightly out of town on the Dunvegan road. This is the largest supermarket on the island and sells pretty much everything you need. In Portree town itself there is a butchers, small supermarket, newsagents and toy shop, pet shop, hardware shop, Boots chemist, camera shop, florist, chocolate shop and various other sports and tourist shops together with some great coffee shops (our favourite is Café Ariba). Jans Vans is also out on the Dunvegan Road and is a huge hardware/garden store that sells all sorts of useful things!
Dunvegan has a small general store, two bakers with coffee shops, a chippy, a health food shop, and a fishing tackle and gun shop together with a few restaurants/hotels and tourist shops.
Post
There is a Royal Mail post box approximately 100 metres from the cottage where mail is usually collected at least once a day.
Local Art and Craft shops and Galleries
Brae Fasach Gallery
Ian Williams runs the splendid Brae Fasach Gallery in which he creates, exhibits and sells his original ceramics and paintings. There is also a selection of framed photography of Skye by Ray Reader and the unique collection of fine art and ceramic highland ponies for sale by Gill Williams.
Ian also runs pottery/painting workshops by prior arrangement.
All the paintings/photos in Lusta are kindly provided by Ian and Ray.
Skye Skyns
Next door to Brae Fasach is Skye Skyns, a 5* tourist board award exhibition tannery run by Clive and Lydia. It is a fascinating place to visit and they are happy to provide a guided tour of the tannery downstairs. Upstairs their shop sells wonderful sheepskin rugs, waistcoats, slippers etc and various wool related products.
Dandelion Designs is another delightful gallery and gift shop down by the waterfront run by Pat and Cathy.
Activities
The following activities are a few of the many pursuits readily available on Skye – more details are found in the lever arch file in the lounge or the notice board in the kitchen. Left home in north wales with a foot of snow on the ground. Got to Lusta Cottage with only sunshine in sight. Cottage was clean, warm and cosy with views that changed every hour. Camera was overworked from the moment we arrived. The walk down by the stream via the waterfalls and along the shore took us straight to the Stein Inn. A most welcoming pub with good food, especially the fish. The location was everything we wanted and coming back each day to Lusta cottage from various sites around was always special and will live with us. We plan to go back and to advise others in our large family to book a week or two at Lusta. Thanks to Craig, Sue and Gail. |

The highlight of my trip to Scotland was sitting in the observatory of Lusta Cottage and enjoying the splendid view while sipping a warm cup of tea! We watched the sunsets, the rainbows and the sheep grazing on the croft below us. It is the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and I had not felt so relaxed in years! The cottage was cozy and bright, and provided ample space for the six of us. Our two young children loved running around the cottage and were kept entertained with the toys and DVDs that were available. The owners were very friendly and helpful. They provided a lot of useful information about the cottage and the surrounding area (where to eat, where to shop, where to hike, etc.). I was initially concerned with its remote location, being far from the places that we wanted to visit, but this great cottage makes the drive back and forth all worth it. I would definitely stay here again. Highly recommended! |
