The Argolis Region
Tolo (Tolon) is a well organised tourist resort situated on the coast in the Southern Peloponnese in the Argolida Prefecture.
Tolo, also known as Tolon, originally a fishing village is approximately 12 kilometers away from Nafplion, the first capital of Greece.
The seaside village of Tolo is build in an amphitheatrically shape along the sandy beach stretching as far as the harbour. The main beach of the village is called “Psili Ammos” meaning “Fine Sand” and is perfect for swimming and sunbathing. The clear, clean sea is shallow and as such particularly suitable for families with small children.
Tolo, where Amaryllis hotel apartments are situated, is well know for it's many excellent fish tavernas and good traditional restaurants, some situated right on Tolo beach.
Bars and nightclubs playing Greek or foreign music and plentiful in Tolo and the evenings can be as lively or as quiet as you would like to make them.
Tolo resort offers many facilities for the holidaymaker including supermarkets, banks, an internet cafe, post office, dry cleaners, hairdressers etc. There are also a number of tourist offices where one can book trips to Spetses or Poros islands nearby, a excursion to Monemvasia, Nafplion, Mycenae, Epidavros Theatre and any other of the numerous sights and areas close to Tolo.
From Tolo visit the uninhabited islands of Romvi and Koronisi in the bay, hire a boat to explore other beaches of the area such as Plaka (around 2 kilometers away from Tolo), Vivari Beach (around 3 kms) and Kondili beach (4kms approx.) or try your hand at watersports such as windsurfing, sailing and waterskiing.
Tolo has the advantage of being in a central position for visitors wanting to visit all the amazing historical sites and places of interest in the Peloponnese all year round.
Nafplio (Nafplion) was the first capital of the newly liberated Greece for a few years before the government was transferred to Athens.
A fascinating city, full of historical monuments, castles and wonderful architecture, the town of Nafplion attracts visitors all the year round. It is one of the most popular destinations for Greek tourists for weekends and holidays in Greece with the tavernas and cafeterias that line the streets of the old town and harbour always alive with people.
Walking around the narrow streets with their overhanging balconies left over from the Venetian occupation one cannot but help stopping and window shopping in the many gift shops with their extraordinary wares spilling out onto the pavements. Nafplion has become a renowned centre for Greek worry beads in recent years and visitors will find many workshops and also a worry bead museum.
Coffee is a big part of life in Greece, "drinking coffee" is a social event and many hours are spent with a cappuccino watching the people go by.
One cannot fail to notice the Palamidi castle towering above the city which was built by the Franks and the Ottomans, worth the ascent of 999 (not confirmed) steps up to see the fortification. the Acronafplia castle is also part of the make up of Nafplion, as is the Bourtzi castle in the centre of the harbour, supposedly one of the most photographed forts in Greece.
Visit Syntagma Square, home of the Archaeological museum and Trianon, the Bavarian lion, the promenade lined with cafes, Saint Spyridon church where Kapodistria was assassinated, the Folklore museum, the Military museum and many other places of interest or why not organise a trip to the Ouzo museum and factory just outside Nafplion.
The Peloponnese Peninsula is reached in a Southerly direction from Athens and separated from the mainland of Greece by the Corinth Canal. On travelling to Tolo one passes through the county of Corinthia (major wine producing region) and on to the Argolida. The Argolida is a citrus region, orange, lemon and grapefruit trees line the roads and the scent during the spring is heavy in the air.
The Peloponnese has played a crucial part in Greece's history and has many monuments of historical interest as well as a unique natural beauty. The counties, Arcadia, Lakonia, Achaia, Korinthia, Mani, Ileia and of course Argolida differ dramatically in their scenery. Some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece are found in the Peloponnese, alongside world famous archaeological sites such as Olympia, Mycenae and the Ancient theatre of Epidavros.
Many visitors to Tolo use the area as a base and a place to relax combining culture and beach for their vacation in Greece. Hire a car or book a guided excursion to visit places such as Mystra, Kalavrita, the "wine roads" of Nemea, Ancient Nemea, Ancient Korinthos, the Corinth Canal or just explore the local area.
Locally, Ancient Tiryns also deserves a big mention being just 2 or 3 minutes outside Nafplion, being a World National Heritage site as does Argos which around 20 mins from Tolo and the oldest continually inhabited city in Europe. At the end of the sandy beach of Tolo there is a small cove named Kastraki where Ancient Asini is found. This is the port that served Mycenae during its reign and the Asini that we are reminded of in Homer's books "The Odyssey" and "The Iliad".
There are many activities in which to partake during a visit to the Peloponnese, kite surfing, go karting, skiing (there are two ski resorts in the Peloponnese which are operative during the winter season) and any number of others.
