"A comfortable, well-equipped apartment with character in an excellent location"
We stayed in the apartment for 12 nights in early September. Karin (the owner) met us at the airport and also took us to the supermarket. The apartment was bigger than we expected with a separate kitchen, combined living and dining area, a bedroom and bathroom. Outdoor space comprised sole use of a big terrace (both sun and shade) with furniture, barbeque and extensive views. We could just see the towers of the palace at Mafra in the distance.
The apartment is in the peaceful Estefania district of Sintra, five minutes walk from the market hall (fresh fish and excellent pastries) the museum of modern art and the stop for the antique tram which runs at weekends down to the coast at Praia de Macas. An easy 15-20 minute walk will take you to the main train station (40 minutes into Lisbon) and then downhill into the historic centre. We enjoyed this walk, which has great views across the town - and we appreciated being away from the tourist traffic.
Sintra is a perfect base for a holiday. We found plenty to do in the town itself - we loved the forest walking paths up to and around the castle and the Pena palace as well as exploring the pretty Sao Pedro district (worth a trip for a good lunch). A local bus service links all the palaces if you don't fancy the walk. The weather was good during our stay, with plenty of sun, but the mist can descend from the mountains - which is part of Sintra's romantic appeal. Karin provides a dehumidifier in the bedroom of the apartment and we found we did need to use it when the humidity was high.
Thank you for your hospitality Karin - we had a wonderful holiday.
