The Dordogne region
There are lots of thing to do and see in the area and the coast is just over an hour and a half’s drive away.
Also within easy driving distance are Bordeaux, Bergerac, Perigueux, St Emilion, Brantome and many other towns of interest suitable for an easy day out.
A few kilometers up the road is the village of La Jemaye which has a huge public lake looked after and monitored by the local council and is free (including the use of kayaks). There is a designated (& supervised) swimming area which has a floating platform offshore for swimming to and diving off, as well as a playground, picnic area, forest walks (one with an activity theme which the kids love), restaurants and shop.
There are many opportunities to go kayaking, or if you prefer, other organized boat trips are available where you will see some of the stunning scenery along the Dordogne river.
The Dordogne is a beautiful region of forests and rolling hills with some of the best vineyards in the world creating some of the finest wines.
Our local village is only small but has a very good bar/restaurant which offers a lunchtime or evening service. The lunchtime menu is excellent value and has a good selection of dishes, including the best chips you will ever taste! The owners speak fluent English and are happy to cater for vegetarians (with a bit of prior notice).
There is also a butchers and a boulangerie/village shop so freshly baked goods are always available, including croissants, chocolatines, pain au raisin, baguettes etc.
The larger town of Montpon is about 10 minutes away and here you can find all the usual shops, banks, tourist information etc. as well as a fishing tackle shop. There is a free leisure lake with sandy beach, playground, water slide, snack restaurant and lifeguards in the summer.
The market is held every Wednesday morning where you can peruse a fabulous display of stalls which offer a wide variety of food and local produce, clothes etc.
Montpon also has a large Sturgeon Farm which is open most days to visitors so you can see how caviar is made and buy some as well.
Riberac is just north of us and is set in the Dronne valley. It dates from the 9th century and is at its best on a Friday which is market day and reputedly one of the biggest markets in Perigord. It is surrounded by Romanesque churches and there is a pretty circuit that passes by many of the little villages and churches of the region
In July and August there is a superb night market held every Tuesday evening by the flood-lit church in the village of Le Pizou which is about 10 mins away. The stalls are mainly food orientated and so the biggest decision is choosing what to eat e.g. duck, snails, mussels, paella, roast pork, spit roast lamb stuffed with couscous......There is no entry fee even though there is live music and dancing. It is a truly French experience and highly recommended for a fun night out.

"A perfect, relaxing get away from the rush of every day life"
This was our 2nd stay at Martin's Lakes with hopefully return visits still to enjoy in the future.. Great fishing on the specimen lake for the anglers in our party - with personal best weights improved on many times over the course of the stay. The gite was comfortable, very clean, well equipped & roomy. The pool just a very few steps from the gite was an absolute gift on those hot, sunny days. The view from the poolside terrace down to the lake a real bonus for those with an interest in wildlife, with daily sightings of interesting creatures to watch. Greg and Nikki are the perfect hosts, allowing us the privacy to really relax and enjoy their bit of heaven, but nearby if needed, with Greg offering advice and encouragement to the anglers. We cannot not recommend the whole Martin's Lakes experience highly enough - the perfect holiday for our party.

"Wonderful property, setting and hosts!"
This was our second visit of 2013 as we had enjoyed our Spring trip so much! Our party consisted of myself, my wife, her daughter and Bill my father in law. It's worth mentioning that Bill is disabled and in his mid 80's so finding suitable accommodation for our family can be tricky. No problems here though, single storey, low steps and a choice of two spacious showers made manoeuvering a breeze! There's plenty of space to relax inside and outside the villa and just a few steps to reach the car. Apart from a wide variety of fishing on site (I caught carp to 37 lbs) there are plenty of excellent and reasonably priced bars and restaurants within a short drive. The gite is very secluded and privacy is respected, but it's also reassuring to know there is always help and advice available from the very obliging owners next door. All in all, a superb property that we all hope to return to again very soon! Pete, Sally, Lizzie and Bill.

"Beautiful, relaxing, great fishing and perfect hosts"
I am a bit reluctant to post this review just in case the secret of this amazing place gets out! My husband and I together with our young daughter (5 going on 15!) stayed for two weeks in this amazing gite in the Dordogne. Montpon is just a short car drive away for all of the essentials and some local restaurants and there is a local restaurant in the village that is great for both lunch and dinner. My husband Keith enjoyed some great fishing in the gite lake a couple of hours each day during the dirst week and for the second week was joined by his brother and our nephew for some serious fishing on the specimen lake which we hired exclusively. Biggest catch was a 42lb carp with many 20+ fish during the week. Greg is more than happy to help and advise to esnure that you get the best reults. We take our own "gear" but Greg does have tackle available for hire. The gite was spotless upon arival and is filled with all appliances/utensils that you should need even if cooking lots. A bbq on the terrace is handy for cooking /dining al fresco as is the large table on the patio. The washing machine and tumble dryer are particularly useful and there is even a log burner if the weather turns unexpectedly cold. The bedrooms have mozzie mesh on the windows to allow the windows to be left open when you are after a little night time breeze after a long hot day without getting bitten to pieces and the pool is perfect for a quick dip or even a leisurely swim during the day. In my opinion there is nothing better than sitting on the terracce with a glass of vino watching the sun set down the valley behind the trees and deer spotting while taking in the stunning view. One evening while sitting on the terrace, a deer got so close, we were scared to breath just in case it could hear us and we scared it away! Nicky and Greg are perfect hosts and we can highly recommend the freshly laid eggs and honey produced by the their own bees - perfect on the feshly baked croissants we purchased daily from the village stores. We did not venture out and about that much as was very very hot during our stay but can highly recommend Riberac - good market on a Friday although sligthly too many Brits for our liking. We prefer Riberac on non market days and there is a great restaurant there called Citronier. A bit pricey but well worth it for the quality of food served. Overall a fantastic holiday and we have already booked for next year.
