The Paphos region

Paphos is a medium size town, with many hotels, restaurants and shops. There are several archaeological and historical sites of interests, including the Ottoman fort that guards the entrance to the harbour, the Roman mosaics and the 'Tombs of the Kings'.

Paphos is located on a coastal strip between the airport and Coral bay where there is a sandy beach. Paphos has all the attributes of medium sized holiday resort, incluidng a water park, which is located on the airport side of the town.

Taking the B7 out of Paphos itself you drive up the hillside to about two thousand feet and pass over a ridge into a cultivated valley..On passing over another lower ridge and through some villages you enter the Chrysochous valley with its abundant grape vines and olive, fig, almond and orange groves. On the right are the forested foothills of the Troodos mountains, on the left are the hills of the Akamas. In front of you you will see the sea as you descend through the valley towards Polis.

There are many well preserved Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Crusader, Lusignan, Venetian and Ottoman ruins on the island including the Tombs of the Kings and Roman mosaics at Paphos and the Amphitheatre at Korium on the old road between Paphos and Limassol. Kolossi castle, a well preserved Crusader castle, is located just outside Limassol.

A fragment of the true cross, found by St Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great, on her pilgrimage to the holy land, is said to be held at the monastery, (women not allowed entry), at the top of Stavrovouni on the road between Limassol and Larnaca. The Hala Sultan Tekke mausoleum, located by the salt lakes just outside Larnaca, is widely held to be the third or fourth most holy place for Islamic pilgrimage after Mecca, Medina and/or Jerusalem.

Snow falls at the top of Mount Olympus in the Winter and it boasts the most Southerly ski resort in Europe although it is very small and has a very short season.

Polis

Polis is at the Akamas end of Chrysochous bay which sweeps in a gentle curve for about 40 km from the Baths' of Aphrodite to Pomos. Beyond Pomos is the Turkish zone. Between Polis and the Baths' of Aphrodite is the marina at Latchi with beaches on either side. A cycleway runs along the beach between a camp site located in a small wooded area between the sea and Polis and the marina at Latchi. There is also a cycleway alongside the main road between Prodromi and Latchi. There are many restaurants at Polis and Latchi and at all points in between and beyond to the Baths' of Aphrodite. There is a go kart track on the Pomos road out of Polis and a ten pin bowling alley along with a pool hall in Prodromi.

The village of Neo Chorio is located on a hill about 500 feet, (150 metres) above Latchi. My apartment is on the outskirts of the village, with views over Chrysochous bay and the Troodos mountains

A wide range of water based activities are catered for at Latchi Marina. Tours to the bays around the Akamas can be made on glass bottomed boats or a boat can be hired. There are several beaches along the bay between the Akamas and Pomos. On the way to the Baths' of Aphrodite, past the Annassa Hotel there is a beach with beach bar and restaurant, water activities are catered for there as well...

The Baths' of Aphrodite can be used as a starting point for walking into the Akamas, although the marked Aphrodite and Adonis trails are very steep and uneven, not for the faint hearted or unfit, particularly in the Summer heat.

There is Cyprus Tourist Board restaurant at the Baths' of Aphrodite with sweeping views across the Chrysochous bay to Pomos.

Walking from Neo Chorio into the Akamas is less strenuous, the road can be followed to the Smigies picnic site, which is another entry point into the Akamas. Activities which are available on the Akamas include mountain biking, quad biking and horse riding.

The tracks and trails from Smigies can be followed down to the Baths' of Aphrodite, to Lara Bay where turtles lay their eggs or up the hill to Drousha, although a 4 wheel drive is necessary for vehicular access beyond Smigies. Drousha can also be accessed by a road from Prodromi, which carries on to Coral Bay.

A marked trail from the Smigies picnic site leads up to the top of Pisamoutou, where there are magnifcent views over the Akamas and Chrysochous Bay to the Troodos mountains in the distance. This trail is fairly gentle compared to the steeper parts of the Aphrodite, Adonis and Smigies trails and may be walkable for the less fit. The longer Smigies trail leads to an abandoned Magnesium mine and joins up with the upper Adonis trail. Following the upper Adonis trail leads you to 'Pyrgos tis Rigainas' a ruined monestary which is linked to the love story between the mythical Byzantine hero Dhigenis Akritas and the Queen of Cyprus known as Rigaina. An easier route here is via the track that runs along the ridge from the Smigies picnic site

I purchased this apartment about six years ago with a view to spending the Winter in Cyprus and then renting it out in the Spring/Summer/Autumn. Most of the teething troubles with the apartment and the complex have now been sorted out and I find it pleasant to live on the edge of the village of Neo Chorio. The locals are reserved but friendly when you get to know them and the village shops and taverns are always welcoming and good value for money. I enjoy walking in the hills around Neo Chorio and through the meadows down to the Baths' of Aphrodite, there is always a variety of wildlife to see and hear including the Egyptian fruit bats that frequent the village from their cave in a nearby ravine, the frog chorus from the village spring and the ubiquitous goats.

Neo Chorio is a peaceful village with a relaxed way of life although the marina at Latchi is only a short drive or walk away. My apartment gets the sun all day long. When it gets too hot on the front veranda, the rear veranda provides a comfortable alternative particularly in the late afternoon sun. The pool is not heated but you will probably appreciate this as you will need to cool off when the sun is at its peak! There are many walks around the village and beyond into the Akamas which are best explored in the Spring and Autumn or at dusk in the Summer when the sights and sounds of the wildlife provide a backdrop to the stunning scenery! In the morning you can wake up to the tinkle of the goats' bells or the sound of village church bells and choir on a Sunday!
