The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur region
The city of Nice occupies an exceptional natural site in the heart of the French Riviera as Côte d'Azur is often known in English. That Mediterranean coastline of the south eastern corner of France, extends from Menton near the Italian border in the east to either Hyères or Cassis in the west. It is a privileged crossroads between the Alps, Provence, Corsica and Italy. Blessed by a sunny, temperate climate, it attracts visitors from around the world.
The Côte d’Azur lies between the mountains peaks of the Alps and the shimmering turquoise Mediterranean. This coastline was one of the first modern resort areas which the British upper class at the end of the 18th century made famous. With the arrival of the railway in the mid-19th century, many aristocrats, wealthy people, writers and artists used to come on holidays, such as Queen Victoria and King Edward VII, when he was Prince of Wales, as well as the Rothschild family, Somerset Maugham and later on, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Edith Wharton and Aldous Huxley. After World War II it became the home of many celebrities, such as Elton John and Brigitte Bardot. It remains to this day, one of the most sort after destinations in France and is ideal for family and group holidays as well as romantic city breaks
Here you find yourself between the Mountains and the Deep Blue Sea. Go from walking in the Mercantour National park or skiing in the Alps to watersports and sunbathing on the local beach. A high quality public transport with a standard fare throughout the Côte d'Azur region of 1.30 euros links Nice to the Mercantour ski resorts at Auron, Isola 2000, Valberg, St Delmas le Selvage, Tende val Casterino, etc. (ideal also for hillwalking in summer). Nice offers the rare possibility of going skiing in the Alps in the morning and spending the afternoon on the beach!
Nice is also within a short journey to nearby St Paul de Vence which is a beautiful town full of Arts and Crafts as well as Grasse with its perfumeries and Biot with its glass blowers. Ventimiglia is an excellent town on the border of Italy that can take less than one hour to reach. The Friday market is particularly well known due to the low cost diverse range of products available.
The Côte D' Azur is renowned for sunshine, glamour, elegance and style, there's so much to do in the area with a lot of events during the year such as the Nice carnival in February, the Menton citrus festival, the Cannes film festival and the Monaco grand prix in May, and the Nice jazz festival in July, so there is always something to keep you occupied. There are also some excellent walks around Cap Ferrat peninsula and Cap D' Ail into Monaco where you can admire the villas of the rich and famous. There are excellent beaches to visit at Cannes, Villefranche, Beaulieu-Sur-Mer and Cap D'Ail. If you hire a car, you can explore the medieval perched villages scattered in the hills across the region or travel over the border into Italy for some fresh pasta lika Mamma used to make!!
The French Riviera also contains the seaside resorts of Antibes, Juan-les-Pins, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Fréjus, Saint-Raphaël, and Saint-Tropez, and surrounds the principality of Monaco, with a total population of over two million.
That region is a major yachting centre, with marinas along its coast. According to the Côte d'Azur Economic Development Agency, each year the Riviera hosts 50% of the world's superyacht fleet, with 90% of all superyachts visiting the region's coast at least once in their lifetime.
The Côte d'Azur is the perfect holiday destination all year round. Winter is comparatively warm (average 53f December - March and rarely below 41f) and summer an average of 75f but can hit Mid 80f in July and August.
Known for its hot summers and mild winters, as a tourist centre it benefits from 300 days of sunshine per year.
Among the Riviera's many attractions are its beautiful beaches along its 115 km of coastline, lovely seaside promenades, interesting museums, famous landmarks and other tourist attractions such as18 golf courses, 14 ski resorts and 3,000 restaurants.
The Alpes Maritimes offers a great choice of places of interest to discover, leisure activities, relaxation, culture and traditions. At the heart of the French Riviera, this department offers everything to charm visitors: an important architectural and cultural heritage, the sea for both water sports activities and relaxation, beaches of sand or pebbles, authentic and peaceful inland countryside, a multitude of mountains for sport activities, picturesque and idyllic villages, preserved gastronomic traditions and an incredibly mild climate.
In order to visit all those places, in town or outside, Nice offers a very impressive public transport system with the brand new tram (opened dec 2007) taking you from one end of Nice to another to the efficient bus and train network taking you to Monaco/St Tropez/Antibes/Cannes. Nice port is also nearby where there are regular ferries to Corsica and great options for short cruises up the coast eg to Monaco.
On the other hand, Nice is a major transportation hub in Europe. The low-cost airlines now offer frequent flights to the Nice Cote d'Azur Airport from London, Paris and other cities. A High-speed rail service is also available to Nice from Paris.
Activities near Nice:
Many visitors to Nice enjoy a day excursion to the city state of Monte Carlo, Monaco or the seaside towns of Antibes, Juan Les Pins, Cannes, Saint Raphael, Fréjus and Saint Tropez.
A journey to Italy: Vintimiglia, San Remo or Genova.

A day on Cap Ferrat, visiting Ephrussi de Rotschild Villa, villa Kerylos and the village of Saint Jean.
A drive to the medieval village of Eze which overlooks the sea 700 meters higher, with the opportunity of admiring the breathtaking landscape from the high and middle Corniches between Nice and Monaco.
The famous sculptor Cesar has been quoted as saying that “Nice is like a woman city. We love her passionately, we may leave her, but we always return to her”. Nice is indeed the capital of the glorious French Riviera, the perfect resort for sun lovers, with its spectacular coastline during the sunny summer months and mild winters, where you are able to sunbathe, paddle in the azure sea, swim, water ski, parascend, jet-ski, or simply stroll in the fresh early morning air, blissful sun, looking at the calming sea, or even only sip a smooth cocktail.
Tourists visiting Nice will find plenty of sightseeing opportunities all around the city. Many of these are historic and date from the greek and roman times as well as the 17th century when Nice belonged to the Kingdom of Savoy from which it separated in 1860. Some of those monuments are the magnificent Palais Lascaris, the Cathédrale de Sainte Réparate and the buildings of the Monastère Notre Dame de Cimiez. Also of interest for tourists in Nice, is the Cathedrale Orthodoxe Russe St. Nicolas, and also the Phoenix Parc Floral de Nice, the city's main botanical garden. Culture abounds in Nice and the city boasts a number of good museums, such as the Matisse Museum, Chagall Museum and the renowned Museum of Contemporary Art.
In the Vieux Nice or Vieille Ville (Old Town) near the Place Massena square, you find narrow streets curving in irregular fashion between old buildings with red-tile roofs, just as with any medieval village of the region; there are shops of clothes and gifts, etc ., but particularly typical small restaurants where you can taste some typical niçoise food such as pisaladiere, pan bagnat, socca or hand made raviolis. In the Vieux Nice is the Cours Saleya, the most famous market of the city where flowers and local food produce are sold during most of the week and a large flea market take place on Mondays.
Nearby is the Park of the Chateau which is situated at the top of the hill that overlooks the city, on the location of a former 1706 castle. The view from the hill shows the stunning breathtaking beauty of Nice. There are several ways to reach the park; one can drive to the top, take the elevator, climb the 213 steps from the bottom to the observation platform or take the “Petit Train Touristique” which begins its journey from the Promenade.
The main tourist attraction in Nice is the PROMENADE DES ANGLAIS, which is 200 meters from our apartment and stretches about 7 km around the Baie des Anges, a favourite "promenade" since the Belle Epoque at the turn of the last century. Always covered with flowers, this wonderful walk looks out onto the beaches on one side, and luxury hotels such as the Negresco on the other. At all hours, people come here to watch the sea, sunbath, jog, cycle and roller skate. There are a variety of water sports available and beach volleyball is the activity of choice of the local youth. On a fine evening, why not have dinner at one of the many restaurants directly on the beach?
Nearby you will find Rue de France, the pedestrian shopping street which runs roughly parallel to the seaside. This area is full of shops, including some exclusive clothing boutiques, and restaurants and cafés with outdoor terraces - a great place to sit and watch the world go by, while you eat or drink.
Our apartment is precisely located at the corner of the Rue de France, near the pedestrian street in the very exclusive Carré d’Or area of Nice (or Golden Square), which is sandwiched between four of the most famous streets in Nice: Boulevard Victor Hugo, Avenue Jean Medecin, Boulevard Gambetta and the world-famous Promenade des Anglais. This area is characterised by superb turn-of-the-century buildings.
There is a unique ambiance here that has to be felt to be understood. From Salsa bars to French Brasseries, this area gives a chic European-style terrace-living that suits those who prefer a more relaxed venue. Have a look at the modern art gallerys that adorn the street, or around the corner join the bustling 'Zone Pieton' and enjoy the shops, bars and cafés, fancy restaurants.
There are several very chic bars within walking distance from the apartment that generally serve crudités and excellent wines and cocktails. The ambient atmosphere, together with music and people, that are well behaved, make in all a very pleasant evening.
Visitors to Nice also enjoy dining at the restaurants located along the French seaside. Wonderful seafood, French wines and Italian and French cuisine can be enjoyed at many seaside restaurants in this Mediterranean city.
In Carré d'Or, the 19th century Palais Massena features impressionist paintings from the Nice school. The palace, located 200mts away from the apartment, also contains ceramics and French folk art.
