Further details indoors

The Old Bakehouse combines old-fashioned charm with modern facilities. It is light, spacious and peaceful.

The triple aspect sitting room which seats four people has an open fire. The modern kitchen opens onto a private terrace. We supply all the basics (salt, pepper, cooking oil etc) and just ask that you replace like with like if anything runs out.

The bedroom has a wardrobe and chest of drawers, and the fully fitted bathroom has a bath with shower over, washbasin and toilet.

Further details outdoors

The Old Bakehouse is situated in the grounds of Camp Hill which extend to about 45 acres. The main house was built in 1827 for Sarah Wedgwood, daughter of Josiah Wedgwood who founded the famous pottery company. Charles Darwin, who was Sarah's nephew and married his cousin Emma Wedgwood, was a regular visitor. We offer a tour of the house for those who are interested.

The gardens were originally landscaped by the previous owners between 1938 and 1983 and contain arguably the finest display of rhododendrons in the country. There are many paths and clearings to explore and it is a great place for children.

Although less than 2 miles from the village of Baldwins Gate you could be in the middle of nowhere. Everything you see is a part of Camp Hill and almost the only thing you can hear is the birds. These include woodpeckers, owls, rooks, house martins, tits, wrens and many more. At dusk there is a great display as they settle down to roost.

If you are feeling stressed or just want to get away from it all, Camp Hill is a fantastic place to unwind, relax and rediscover a sense of peace and wellbeing.

Further details

We were the first to stay at the Old Bake House and had a very enjoyable week, very comfortable and well equipped. The location and grounds are fantastic, ideal for walking, cycling or just relaxing, nice quiet country location, we will definitely be returning.

The Heart of England/Peak District

North Staffordshire is something of a hidden gem with both fabulous countryside and places of interest to visit.

Stoke-on-Trent with its Potteries is at the heart of the region, including a number of pottery museums and associated retail outlets. In addition there are several theatres, cinemas, a water park, dry ski slope, and shopping centres.

The Peak District and historic spa town of Buxton are less than an hour away by car. Bakewell, Chatsworth House and Alton Towers are only a little further. In the other direction there is Shrewsbury and mid Wales or Chester and the North Wales coast..

Newcastle-under-Lyme

Close to the cottage is the conservation area of Maer where Josiah Wedgwood lived and Charles & Emma Darwin were married.

Bridgemere Garden World is about 7 miles away and the Dorothy Clive Gardens are within 3 miles.

Slightly further afield is the Trentham Estate with its formal gardens (including barefoot walk), restaurants, shopping village, boat trips and monkey forest. The recently opened Potters Wheel, which has 42 eight-seat capsules, offers spectacular views of the surrounding area.

Keele golf course is within 10 mintues drive and there are various opportunities for walking, cycling, horse riding, fishing and paint balling.

In the nearby village of Baldwins Gate is a butcher and general store which sells excellent local meat and other produce.

There are several pubs in the area, most of which also serve food, often using locally sourced ingredients.

"A hideaway adjacent to a historical home in beautiful countryside."

We thoroughly enjoyed this little two-story apartment in a restored former Bakehouse. The staircase between floors was frightening to a woman in her late 70s who is somewhat unsteady on her feet, but … More

"Great cottage. Great location."

A lovely cottage in beautiful grounds. Well equipped. Bedroom and bathroom are downstairs and lounge and kitchen upstairs. Open fire in lounge and radiators in all rooms. Very easy to access motorway and main roads but you wouldn't know it as it is so peaceful. It is hidden and we didn't realise we were there when we arrived. A notice or signpost at the cottage would help. Very reasonably priced too which was a bonus.
Many thanks.

"Interesting place to stay"

We love the area, beautiful surroundings and all amenities up to high standard. Property quirky...bedroom and bathroom on ground floor...kitchen and lounge above. Location good for access to lots of interesting places to visit....National Trust, Shrewsbury, Ludlow, Market Drayton....even Trentham Gardens and Alton Towers. All round one of the best we have stayed in, and we have been staying in cottages in this country for over 30 years.

"Wonderful weekend in a great place!"

We loved the quirkiness of the Old Bake House and the fabulous open fire that really brought the sitting room to life on the 3 cold January nights we were here. Some good friends joined us for the Saturday evening and we enjoyed a home-cooked supper, by the fire - lovely! Katharine & Martin were just great and we really enjoyed looking around Camp Hill House itself. We're looking forward to seeing how the renovations progress over the years. We'll definitely be back.

"The perfect getaway in a beautiful and peaceful location."

We stayed here with our 3 month old son. The Old Bakehouse had everything we needed. It is located 10 mins from junction 15 of the M6, but you cannot hear it! The only things that break the silence are the wildlife and the logs crackling on the fire. The gardens and views are stunning and you can walk through the woods on various trails.

Close by are various farm shops where you can buy local produce at competitive prices. Also there are pubs not too far away that offer excellent home cooked food. The Red Lion in Market Drayton we found to be the best in terms of quality of food and value for money.

We recommend visits to Trentham, Shrewsbury and Ironbridge.

The owners showed us around the main house and explained its history to us. Ask for directions to Eye Rock for a stunning view of the house. Also Martin provided me an axe and saw to chop wood which I enjoyed alot.

Overall this was one of the best weeks we have had away in the UK and we are looking to book again some time next year.
