The Costa del Sol/Malaga region
Nerja is where the mountains of the Sierra Almijara come down and meet the sea. It is a Spanish town, not a 'tourist' town, in a spectacular setting between the foothills of the mountains and the sparkling Mediterranean. A place where clear fresh mountain water flows in abundance, making the village a paradise of trees, flowers and colour, all year round. It lies in one of Spain's richest farming areas; abundant with fruit, vegetables and flowers; this is known as the 'Garden of Europe". It is an area of outstanding beauty situated in the midst of a tropical valley where you will find olive groves, avocado trees, fields of wild strawberries and the greatest variety of exotic plants all encouraged by what is considered to be the best all year round climate in Europe.
Because of its unique location, and being protected from the north by the majestic, snow capped, Sierra Nevada range, Nerja has its own micro-climate and the soft dry air is known to be particularly beneficial to sufferers of respiratory and associated disorders. Nerja is essentially a Spanish village, with a kind and friendly community who will welcome you on every visit. Stroll through the narrow white-washed streets and you will discover interesting court-yards, colourful shops and local people simply sitting in the sun this is the typical Nerja atmosphere, unhurried and relaxed. You will find the magnificent Balcon de Europa stretching out into the shimmering Mediterranean. This splendid area paved with marble and with an avenue of palm trees is the centre of activity for many of the local festivals, or is an ideal place just to meet friends at one of the pavement cafes.
You will find a seemingly never ending choice of restaurants and traditional Tapas bars with delicious food and friendly service. Or, you may prefer to try one of the typically Andalusian beach restaurants where you can enjoy anything from freshly grilled sardines (a local speciality!) to Spain's finest Paella, having just watched it being freshly prepared over a wood fire.
Nerja / Parador-Carabeo area
Main Attractions The coastline itself here is unique in that the Mountains actually reach the shore and form majestic cliffs which shelter picturesque beaches and coves town authorities have imposed limitations on this zone to protect the area from mass tourism, it is quite different from the towns located to the west of Malaga the area contains a large number of springs, forming rivers and streams and therefore its name is appropriate. Nerja was called Narixa during the Moorish occupation which means "abundant spring" climate - the mountains protect from the winter north winds while the influence of the sea makes for milder temperatures in both winter and summer agriculture is rich and abundant due to this climate and therefore fresh fruits and vegetables of many exotic varieties are available year round fishing is also important to Nerja and you can watch the fisherman come back from their night fishing and sort their catch or fix their nets tourism is now Nerja's main source of income and as such the town is geared to providing great accommodations, restaurants and access to all the area attractions... Caves of Nerja - underground streams perforated the limestone of these mountains forming huge chambers and strange but lovely stalactites and stalagmites. The cave was inhabited as far back as Higher Paleolithic Age, 30,000 years ago and was used up to about 3,000 years ago. Sound and light equipment has been installed to provide easy access and viewing for the interest of tourists. One of the chambers has been converted into an original setting for the Internationally famous Festival of Dance and Music, held every summer since 1960, and seats some 800 spectators. During this summer festival, the Bolshoi Ballet and many renowned orchestras have performed in the past. Throughout the year there is the occasional concert held in this magnificent site where the acoustics are suberb. There are cave paintings to view and a museum, restaurant, cafe and other facilities.
Cultural & Festival Activities New Years - celebration held in the centre of town on the Balcon de Europa Easter - parade & Holy Week celebrated May 3rd - holiday when special foods prepared May 15th - Romeria de San Isidro - a pilgrimage involving gaily decorated carts and horses June 24 - Saint John's Day - to the beach to enjoy the speciality Torta de San Juan July 16 - feasts in honour of Virgen del Carmen which honours the sea and its importance Oct 9 - 13 - Nerja Fair in honour of patron saints of the town, Michael and the Virgen August December - the town is beautifully lit and decorated for the season In May and September, the Maro festivals take place, spectacles not to be missed. The procession starts in Nerja and finished at the Nerja Caves where the tradition is for families to eat, dance and sing the day away.
