The Murcia region

Los Alcázares (pronounced "al cath er as") is situated at the very centre of the Mar Menor's west coastline. Originally a seafaring village, Los Alcázares was named after the palaces that were built by the Arabs. Today, its population of more than 6,000 and its many visitors share the wonderful climate, its promenade, long sandy beaches and marina not only during the summer, but the whole year round. The waters of the Mar Menor are so relaxing at any time of year, it provides long stretch of clean sandy beaches, (they are cleaned every day), the safe calm water provides an excellent playground for children of all ages.

There are plenty of beach bars, restaurants of all types in the town, from traditional Spanish tapas to European and Asian, Chinese restaurants and Wok buffets abound, the Spanish love Chinese food.

The Mar Menor is the largest salt-water lagoon in Europe, which is safe for all forms of water sport; it is non-tidal, crystal clear, and shallow never reaching more than 7 metres in depth and with average water temperature of 23 degrees. So if you are taking a sailing boat out, you do have to be careful of the sea floor. Even experienced sailors have been caught out. The area boasts up to 320 days of sunshine each year, over 3000 hours. It certainly beats the “grey” days of the UK. The temperature in the area averages 22 degrees rising to 29 degrees through June, July, August and September. The area is well known for Levante wind, which provides a cooling breeze at the heat of the day.

With all this glorious sunshine and warm water, the area is understandably known for a wide range of water sports, swimming, windsurfing, water skiing, jet skiing yachting and scuba diving. Boats, pedallos, jet skis are all available for hire. There is a Kite school on the beach of Los Alcazares, at the Los Narejos end, or northern area, which you can hire or have some training, they hold competitions at various times of the year.

Alternatively if you just want to sunbath there are over 73km of coastline featuring many beautiful, clean, sandy beaches. Those are in superb condition and receive “Blue Flags” all the time. Away from the water, interests such as golf in one of the 9 (could be more by the time you read this) championship golf courses that are all within 15 minutes drive, Roda Golf, La Serena, Mar Menor Gold and the 3 world-class 18 hole courses at the La Manga club, also with horse riding, cycling, and tennis. Or if you like walking you can visit the local towns and markets, we have a few, there is a local market on every day of the week, including Saturday and Sunday, selling fresh local produce direct from the farmers and all those kick-knacks you love to buy and take home, or take a bus ride to the historic city of Cartagena or Murcia.

Also if you prefer to relax and take advantage of the water healing abilities, the area is known for its spa water beauty treatments. Due to their chemical qualities, the waters from the Mar Menor are renowned for having many medicinal properties. The high concentration of salts and iodines, the stillness of the water as well as being shallow, and of course its exceptional temperature in winter as well as in the summer, all blend together to form a unique combination transforming these waters into the best treatment against certain skin disorders and other ailments.

Lo Pogan area is famed for the healing properties of its “mud”; many swear that it has significantly helped their rheumatoid and arthritic conditions. Apart from being the largest open-air spa, the Mar Menor is thought to be one of the best places to organise regattas and to enjoy the other numerous water sports throughout the year. There are several boat clubs along the coastline and many marinas where you can hire or bring your own boat, yacht, or other sailing craft.

Los Alcazares

There is a water centre on the beach which is a haven for water sports such as Jet -Ski's, kite surfing, sailing boats, parasailing, canoeing and fishing. The warm, crystal clear waters, shallow shore lines and beach inflatables also attract many families in the summer months.

There is a local market twice weekly where you can pick up some great bargains. A friendly post room (where English is spoken) is situated in the square of the town where you can pick up your daily newspapers, Internet access is also available as well as a hire car agency at this establishment.

There are various of sports pubs and there are many restaurants in the area, ranging from English food, Chinese, Indian, or international at very reasonable prices. There are also numerous alternatives if you want to eat in, there are English butchers, a supermarket within walking distance of the complex and a number of takeaways.

Check out the local tourist information for leaflets on different days out. There are three water parks a short distant away, as well as a zoo. There are various festivals held in the town each year, the most notable is the Water Festival in October, which the whole town attend, this consists of wind surfing races, barbecues and music of all kinds throughout the day.

Bicycles are available to hire locally. For more information see www.los-alcazares.com. For those who like Golf, the Mar Menor has three up market golf courses at hand, and also a driving golf range 10 mins drive away

"Lovely apartment in a great location."

Only a few hours away from the UK and one of the easiest transfers possible from the airport to the apartment; 10 minutes maximum. Ideal for those that want to get to destination as quickly as possible.

The apartment is very well appointed, with towels / chairs / washing machine etc. No need to take a lot with you if you don't mind washing during your stay. The air con was great and the balcony provided a lovely view of the sunset over the hills in the evening.

The complex is a gated community and was very quiet when we stayed (last week of June into July) with the added security of a nightly guard on patrol. The pool was not particularly warm at this time of the season, but provided a nice refreshing escape from the sun. There was also a pool guard on duty during the day.

It was only a 5 minute walk into the main strip for restaurants / bars and then another few minutes to the lovely beach. We stayed with two kids (4 and 6) who coped with the walk very well and loved the beach and the shallow waters of the sea. There are a few supermarkets close by, the Mercado and Lidl are both well stocked if you want to eat in.

Would recommend the road train for a bit of fun in the evening and spoilt for choice for places to eat out.

If you feel like excercising the promenade offers a great running route along the front.
