The northern Spanish region of Asturias is known for its lush, forested landscapes, picturesque coastline, stunning beaches and array of religious sites. Medieval churches dot the mountain tops and coastal resorts are busy with beach-goers. Its exciting variety and rural splendour make it a popular holiday spot, ideal for a break in a Holiday Lettings rental.
Towns and cities in Asturias
The region’s capital is Oviedo. Wander along the historic old town’s cobbled streets to see its churches, squares, museums and elegant cathedral, before stopping at a churreria to enjoy sugar-sprinkled churros dipped in indulgent chocolate sauce. Oviedo’s newer quarters are a joy for pedestrians, too, with virtually traffic-free plazas and streets to explore.
Oviedo is in the heart of the Cider Route, so don’t miss your chance to taste this local apple speciality in an authentic sidreria. You can identify them by wooden beamed floors and unique, flavour-enhancing method of pouring the beverage from a great height.
Be sure to venture beyond the capital and explore some smaller Asturian towns. They range from quaint northern fishing villages like Luarca to beautiful inland towns like Cangas de Onís, nestled in greenery.
Things to do in Asturias
A holiday in Asturias doesn’t have to be all sightseeing in cities and towns, though. The region’s landscape provides endless opportunities for a more adventurous break. Why not try kayaking down the Sella River for fresh air and a shot of adrenaline? And if spectacular views give you a thrill, go for a hike in the Picos de Europa National Park. You can even look into the region’s ancient history by exploring the cave art of the Teverga Prehistoric Park.
The Asturian coast
Asturias boasts many beautiful coastal towns including Gijon, which is also one of the most popular. With bustling streets and a sweeping crescent of sand, it’s a wonderful blend of city and beach holiday.
Miles of beautiful beach extend along the coast, so you’ll likely find a deserted stretch of golden sand to call your own. Don’t miss the famous rock formations at Cuevas de Mar where centuries of crashing waves have worked their magic, leaving spectacular stone archways to admire.

3 bedroom apartment and house in Andrin, we do not allow pets
Beautiful house, town and beach!
We had an amazing time in the nice little town Andrin and our stay in the house of Maria Luisa. The host and her family were very friendly and helpful, and they made us all feel very welcome. The location of the town is perfect for climbing, hiking and surfing. Close by the house there are some tasty restaurants and it is walking distance to the closest beach. For us this was the perfect summer vacation and we hope to return next summer! …
Great views from appartment in idylic location
Lovely quiet fishing village with spectacular views from appartment - as shown in photos. Nearest beach less than a scenic 5 min walk along quaint cobbled paths and great for kids. Plenty of other beaches are a futher walk or drive away. Very limited wifi which makes a nice break! Parking is about 100m away near the medieval church. Owners met us at the church (easy to find) and took us to the house - they were very helpful and friendly. Great walks from the appartment to the coast and just a walk away dinosaur footprints in the rocks. Also good waves on the beach round the corner to body board in, while the local beach feels very beautiful, safe and fun. Overall a lovely place to stay in a spectacular location, the photo's do not do it justice. We would definitely go back. …
2 bedroom in Llanes
Great location for a two week stay in the town of Llanes- perfect blend of scenery, beaches, cafes and restaurants. Even on the rainy days, we were only a 5 minute walk to the municipal pool. Also very close to the train station and the bus station for trips to Ribadesella, Arriondas and beyond. The reception staff were always very helpful and the atmosphere of the complex is friendly but quiet at night. The shutters also ensured two weeks of perfect sleep. …
Great Villa Asturiana near the beach 2 km
We have just returned from a week in this beautiful region of Spain. There were 12 people in our party ranging from ages 3 - 77 and we all had a great time. Casona Margaret is in a rural location with short drives to the nearest town and beautiful beaches. The villa itself is spacious and well equipped with a rustic charm. The grounds were amazing with a lovely pool, tennis courts and a beautiful apple orchard to run around in if your 3 or watch the sun set over if you're not. Alex & his team were kind, attentive and efficient hosts and who went out of their way to ensure we had an enjoyable stay. I would not hesitate to return or to recommend this lovely villa in this gorgeous and diverse region of Spain. …

Great opportunity to explore real Spain - be prepared as little English spoken or on menues- but perfect for those who wish to venture off the beaten track. Stunning coastline, beaches and great for walking in well marked trails - inland more resembles the alps - and plenty of towns, villages to explore with real history. Casa Cudillero was the perfect bolt hole to return to after day out and full size bath was a treat. Already considering a return trip!! …
