Villa Kapare stands on the edge of the hillside at the end of the traditional Cretan village of Kokkino Chorio, where the famous movie “Zorba the Greek” was filmed , on a quiet, enviable position, 40 meters only from a little square in the heart of the village. It was the main Cafenion (traditional coffee bar) of the village and without doubt its most captivating feature is the huge vine covered terrace on the seaward side with absolutely mesmerizing, panoramic view of the coastline below. There, in a bygone age, the old men of the village, sat looking out the Souda Bay, wondering when the next pirate ship might appear over the horizon!
Villa Kapare is ideal for those who wish to have peaceful vacation, with everyday swimming in the sea at the nearby beaches and to experience the hospitality of the Cretan people and the local traditions, with the added advantage of enjoying breathtaking panoramic views of Souda Bay and White Mountains.
The villa is within walking distance of a mini market, with everything you may need, and a tavern serving excellent Greek food at convenient prices. A small beach with clear blue water called “Koytalas” is 2 minutes away by car and the main sandy beach of Almyrida is only 5 minutes away. At Almyrida village there are also a variety of traditional tavernas, café bars and shops and some water sport facilities are offered, such as windsurfing, snorkelling and canoe.
High double gates open onto a vine covered veranda and from here an entrance door leads to an airy ground floor living area, with stone floor, burning stove, and decorated touches of a cretan traditional village style. To one side a large breakfast counter with pine shelving separates the fully equipped kitchen (see amenities list). Against one wall is the large dining table and chairs and opposite here doubles doors lead out to the huge main veranda covered by a vine arbour with panoramic view. Here a large patio table and chairs can offer a marvelous breakfast staring at the blue sea or a romantic dinner watching the captivating sunset.
On the other side of the living room there is a sitting area with a fitted sofa, plus chairs and a coffee table grouped around the warm fireplace. Beyond here seven stone-steps lead up to a small hallway with doors off, to a full bathroom with washing machine, plus an airy and spacious double bedroom with a window offering wonderful sea view. Off the hallway to the rear is a further bedroom with a double bed and window overlooking the entrance courtyard below. This bedroom also has two single beds (one bed can easily turn to a sofa) into a sleeping gallery above and accessed by a small pine staircase. The sleeping gallery has its own little windows looking out over the rooftop towards the sea. Both bedrooms have adequate wardrobe space.
The property benefits from extensive gardens, olive trees, vines and fruit trees, which the guests are free to taste. The lovely courtyard area provides the perfect spot for relaxation and cooling under the fresh shade of the vine arbour, or for a very peaceful sunbath under the vital sun of Crete.

The Chania Prefecture region
Crete has everything you that could possibly want from a holiday: soaring mountains that are snow capped from November to June, many great walking trails including Europe's deepest gorge, ancient archaeological sites and Minoan palaces, quaint villages, sparkling clear blue seas with tavernas serving freshly caught fish, golden beaches, glorious wild flowers in the Spring, and a variety of delicious foods which are all made from healthy home grown produce.
As incredible as the island is, it is the Cretan people who will make your holiday truly memorable. Descendants of the Minoan's, one of Europe's earliest civilizations, and shaped by centuries of struggle against oppression, the Cretans are as rugged as the mountains, fiercely independent but passionately friendly.
Villa Kapare is located in the Apokoronas region, east of the beautiful town of Chania. With its stunning Venetian harbour, quayside bars and restaurants, what better place to relax and watch the world go by. In the narrow streets behind Chania's harbour you will find tavernas, bars, the famous covered market, and many local shops selling handicrafts, textiles, jewellery and hand made ceramics.
The climate of Crete is a temperate Mediterranean climate and the weather is characterized by long hot, dry summers and mild winters. The Spring can be warm and sunny during the day but still have cooler evenings and is perfect for walking.
The village Kokkino Chorio is famous for its role in the film of “Zorbas the Greek', based on the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis the internationally famous Cretan writer, in which the protagonist was Anthony Quinn. Kokkino Horio taverna and mini market are only 200m from Villa Kapare. The family run-taverna has delicious food and very friendly owners (Zacharias and his son Yiannis) who know everything about the village and the surrounding area. During the summer months there are occasional live Cretan music nights at the taverna (once a month or so), which are a lot of fun.
There are little whitewashed houses and narrow streets that wind around the village centre. At the village kafenion you can find older locals who were used as extras in the film, and they will happily show you photos of themselves with Anthony Quinn. Just 1 minutes by car from Villa Kapare is the famous glass blowing workshop and taverna that serves organic food and wine. Here you can watch glass being blown in the traditional manner, into amazingly beautiful products including lampshades, ornaments, decanters, plates and bowls.
The coastline below Villa Kapare is famous for its sea caves. At cape Drapano, approximately 10 metres under water, is the impressive Elephant Cave, an area 60m² full of stalactites and stalagmites of various shapes and colours. There is also Koutalas cove, which is a rocky inlet with a small stony/sandy beach.
Plaka village square is lined with mulberry trees and is just 2 km away. It has 5 tavernas, an Italian restaurant, 2 well stocked mini markets, a hair dresser, and 7 cafes.
The lovely village of Almyrida is only 3 km from Villa Kapare, and is built around a pretty crescent shaped sandy beach, with a small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are excellent tavernas, café/bars, bakeries, a jewellery shop, mini-markets, gift shops, a pharmacy and a lot more. Also in Almyrida there is a scuba diving office, a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans. There also offices for tourist information, boat trips, horse riding, guided walking tours, and guided coach excursions.
A few minutes by car from the villa, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas (Vamos, Litsarda, Douliana, Kefalas, etc). There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio, lace makers in Gavalohori, and silk makers in Kalamitsi. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 40 minutes away by car.
