The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
History - The Turquoise Coast around Kalkan is steeped in history with old Lycian rock tombs, Roman amphitheatres and a sunken city for the discerning historian to explore. Various guide books are available in the apartment as well as a copy of 'The Lycian Way' by Kate Clow which features maps of rural walks around the old Lycian coastline. Must see places include Tlos, Sakklikent Gorge, Kekova (sunken city), Kale (ancient Fort), Pinar and the ruins and amphitheatres at Patara, Letoon and Xanthos. Patara is the birth place of Santa Claus and is currently undergoing excavation work to uncover its well preserved ruins underneath the sand.
Beaches - Kalkan is situated between two of the best beaches in Turkey. Kaputas, the second most photographed with its crystal clear emerald water and white sand (10 minute local bus ride), and Patara (30 minute bus ride) is a natural conservation beach where endangered Loggerhead turtles come to lay their eggs.
Scenery - The Turquoise coastline boasts spectacular views of the Mediterranean sea against the beautiful backdrop of the Taurus mountains. As you travel around it is hard not to notice the abundance of olive and pine trees, pomegranate, eucalyptus and cotton. Ancient Lycian tombs are randomly carved into the cliffs and tortoises roam freely. The most spectacular stretch of coastline is between Kalkan and Kas, and the stunning Sakklikent Gorge is nearby with its natural beauty and refreshing mountain water.
Shopping - Fethiye (1 hour by road) has a large market every Tuesday, Kalkan on a Thursday and Kas (30 minutes by road) every Friday. The nearby town of Kas has a relaxed bohemian feel to it and is definitely worth a trip.
Watersports - A full range of water sports, snorkelling, diving and kayaking can be found in and around Kalkan.
Boat Trips - Daily boat trips can be booked each morning from Kalkan or Kas harbour. Longer Gulet tours can be booked through a local travel agent.
Kalkan / Walking distance to town centre area
Kalkan is a hidden gem in the ancient region of Lycia on the South-West coast of Turkey, known as the Turquoise Coast. It is a charming, sophisticated bougainvillea covered fishing village with traditional Ottoman-style houses nestling in a breathtaking landscape between the Taurus mountains and the azure sea. Once a Greek fishing village called Kalamaki, it maintains its charm to this day with rows of cobbled streets that meander down through the whitewashed Ottoman style buildings to the harbour.
By day you can explore the quaint gift shops and galleries of the old town, have a Turkish bath or massage, take a boat trip from the harbour or have lunch in one of the many eateries which provide excellent fresh and locally produced cuisine. There is a small white pebble beach as well as a number of stylish beach clubs which are accessed by boat or free taxi service. If you prefer to escape the heat of the day, a taxi ride to the cooler mountain village of Islamlar is recommended to explore or have lunch at one of the freshwater trout farms.
At night Kalkan comes to life with shops, bars and the sounds of live jazz or Turkish music playing from candle-lit roof terrace restaurants that look out across the glowing white dome of the mosque and the harbour. Most hotels host traditional Turkish nights (open to non-residents) with belly dancing shows and buffet or barbecued food.
Komurluk, one of the best locations in Kalkan is an exclusive area affording spectacular views of the sea, ‘mouse’ and ‘snake’ islands, the old town and the picturesque harbour. Komurluk has its own chic beach club set into the cliffs below the apartment where you can sunbathe, swim, dine or relax in the bar. Komurluk is a peaceful area, yet only a ten to fifteen minute walk to the centre of town where you can find shops, restaurants, the harbour, local beach, bus station and transport to other beach clubs.
How to get there
There are many regional airports in the UK operating reasonably priced charter flights (First Choice, Thomas Cook, XL Airways, MyTravel, Onur Airways, Freebird) to Dalaman Airport (approximately one and a half hours drive to Kalkan) or Antalya Airport (approximately three hours). Easyjet are also now flying from Gatwick to Dalaman. Most airlines operate during the summer months (April to October), although some airlines operate through the winter months. For great comparisons of flight prices try travelsupermarket.com, travelrepublic.co.uk, airflights.co.uk or aegeanflights.com.
We are happy to organise transfers or provide the website/contact details of a local travel agent who offer excellent private air-conditioned transfers or car hire to and from the airport of your choice. Transfer costs from Dalaman Airport are £50 each way for a car and £60 each way for a minibus.
Please note that all UK citizens visiting Turkey need to purchase a £10 tourist visa (payable in £sterling) on arrival before passport control. It is a multiple entry visa valid for three months.

Guestbook
"Having been on holiday to Turkey many times in the past we can honestly say that this one was the best. Kalkan is a beautiful place and Number Two Komurluk Apartments is without doubt one of the prime locations in the area, the apartment itself was superb in every way. The furnishings, the fittings, the decor, the layout, in fact the lot. The only problem was that at the end of two weeks we had to come home! If we choose to holiday in Turkey again we wouldn't dream of looking anywhere else". Stephen and Frances (Birmingham) October 2007.
"Just a note to say how much we enjoyed your apartment. Fabulous view, great location. The apartment was very comfortable and your caretaker delightful and most helpful". M & G Hall (Argyll, Scotland) September 2007.
"The holiday was brilliant! We all love Kalkan, it's so beautiful and everyone is so friendly and the apartment was perfect. Umit looked after us really well. If only we could have stayed longer!" C & S McDonnell, S Crump & T Denslow (Plymouth, Devon) September 2007.

"We had an excellent time in Kalkan, the apartment was superb and the views were simply breathtaking. We would not hesitate to recommend your apartment to family and friends. I would also just like to mention that Umit was excellent, nothing was too much trouble and the apartment was kept immaculate". The Donaghy family (Prestatyn, Denbighshire) August 2007.
"Wonderful, idyllic, peaceful, we felt like we were in heaven. It was the most relaxing holiday we've ever had! Your apartment was superb and so well-equipped. We didn't want to come home we had such a wonderful holiday, and would recommend it to anyone. Just wished we could have swung the 2 weeks! Nevertheless we definitely will be going again if you would kindly allow us to use your lovely apartment some other time." P Halstead & S Whiteside (Chatburn, Lancs) June 2007.
"We had a great time in Kalkan and thoroughly enjoyed our stay in your beautiful apartment. The apartment had everything you could possibly need for a relaxing independent break. We were especially impressed with the views from the balconies and wish we could wake up to that every morning. Kalkan itself is a lovely escape from the usual hectic tourist resorts. We would recommend the apartment for anyone who is looking for a peaceful, relaxing break". J Brady & K Allen (Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands) May 2007.
