Enquire nowThe Hebrides / Skye / Outer Hebrides region
The main islands of the Outer Hebrides include Lewis and Harris, North Uist, Benbecula, South and Barra. Lewis and Harris is the largest island in the chain and are the third largest in the British Isles. Both are frequently referred to as individual islands, although they are joined by a land border.
The Isle of Harris / Amhuinnsuidhe area
The Isle of Harris has incredible diversity in its landscape. You will notice a stark contrast between the rugged, mountainous terrain in the North, the East coasts dramatic, rocky landscape and the numerous unspoilt golden beaches and fertile machair soil on the West coast.
Harris has the highest density of golden eagles in Europe and the 2 kilometre walk to the observatory located in Glen Meavag which is home to a nesting pair, is only a 15 minute drive from the accommodation.
For keen fishermen & sportsmen, the Amhuinnsuidhe Castle estate is within walking distance of the house and offers some of the best salmon and sea trout fishing in Britain as well as excellent stalking and rough shooting.
Now owned by the National Trust for Scotland, St Kilda lies 41 miles to the west of Harris. Populated until the last century, these volcanic islands have the most dramatic and foreboding landscape of anywhere in the UK. This World Heritage Site has the largest colony of guillemots in the world, the oldest and largest colony of fulmars, the biggest colony of puffins in Britain and over one million birds in total. There are several operators running trips around the waters of Harris and St Kilda, a trip that that will never be forgotten.
The Isle of Harris Golf Course at Scarista (50 minutes drive away) was described recently in a global Golf magazine as "one of the most picturesque 9-hole courses in the world." Overlooking 3 miles of unspoiled golden sands with the Island of Taransay as the back drop, it’s a truly unique golfing experience.
