The Hebrides region

Often referred to as The Isle of Harris, Harris is the southern part of the island of Lewis and Harris, the largest of the Outer Hebrides.

The ferry port of Tarbert is the capital village and is home to a range of restaurants and small shops. It naturally divides Harris into the largely unspoilt, mountainous north - a magnet for hillwalkers - and the more populated south with its numerous villages and sweeping white sandy beaches. Those at Husinish, Luskentyre and Scarista are often regarded as being the most spectacular.

And the locals - known as the Hearach – are as justifiably proud of their Gaelic heritage as they are of their stunning landscape.

Home to a distinct, spiritual and lively culture, these safe and friendly Hebridean communities enjoy a more relaxed pace of life and extend a warm welcome to all who visit them.

Harris and the nearby islands of North and South Uist, Benbecula and Barra offer a wide range of traditional cultural events and visitors often find themselves joining in with the local highland games, agricultural shows, ceilidhs and hogmanay celebrations.

This unique Hebridean culture is founded on strong religious beliefs and Sunday - the Sabbath - remains a special day on Harris. It’s a day where you can relax, reflect and spend precious, unhurried time on your own or with those who are closest to you.

The Isle of Harris really is a truly special destination.

White sandy beaches, spectacular scenery and warm Gaelic communities. Fascinating wildlife and challenging outdoor activities in the backdrop of an unspoilt wilderness.

And not forgetting some of the freshest seafood in the world.

Explore Harris on foot, by car or by public transport and you’re sure to find exactly what you are looking for.

From the Clisham Ridge to the less challenging 25 mile Harris Walkway, Harris offers a variety of walking routes for all levels and the fishing opportunities are endless in the clear coastal waters and lochs.

Visitors are welcome at the Harris Golf Club – a nine hole links course with stunning views over the Atlantic and whatever your religious beliefs or denomination, you’ll find a warm welcome at the many Presbyterian churches on the island. There's also a regular bus service between Tarbert and Husinish Beach every day - just ask at the Tourist Information Office in Tarbert for more information.

We can’t list all the attractions and activities that our island has to offer but here are a few that we think you should certainly consider ...

Sea Harris is a well established local tour company specialising in scheduled and chartered boat trips to the fascinating world heritage site, St Kilda, and other nearby islands. If you have the time, we would highly recommend this chance of a lifetime to see how the St Kildans lived a century ago.

The Seallam! Visitor Centre in Northton is an interesting collection of art, music, books and exhibitions and a chance to discover your Highland ancestry.

The North Harris Trust is a community organisation and charity that develops and safeguards the rich natural and culture heritage of Harris. Over the past decade they have repaired and extended many of the beautiful hill, beach and mountain paths and you can also join them on various eagle, seal and general wildlife walking tours.

One of the most remote and ancient monuments in Europe, the Standing Stones at Calanais in Lewis attract tens of thousands of visitors every year – fascinating, spiritual and awe-inspiring.
