About this location
The Chania Prefecture region
Crete has everything for the visitor: soaring mountains that are snow capped from November to June, many great walking trails including Europe's deepest gorge, ancient archaeological sites and Minoan palaces, quaint villages, sparkling clear blue seas with tavernas serving freshly caught fish, golden beaches, glorious wild flowers in the Spring, and a variety of delicious foods which are all made from healthy home grown produce.
The villa is located in the heart of The Apokoronas Region just east of the beautiful town of Chania. With its stunning Venetian harbour, quayside bars and restaurants, what better place to relax and watch the world go by. In the narrow streets behind Chania's harbour you will find tavernas, bars, the famous covered market, and many local shops selling handicrafts, textiles, jewellery, hand made ceramics and leather goods.
The climate of Crete is a temperate Mediterranean climate and the weather is characterized by long hot, dry summers and mild winters. The Spring can be warm and sunny during the day but still have cooler evenings and is perfect for walking, birdwatching and looking at the wild flowers. All in all Crete is absolutely perfect for your Villa holiday.
Gavalochori is a traditional cretan village with great historical importance for the Apokoron area. There are remnants and artifacts from Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman eras. Many of the village artifacts are now housed in the Historical and Folklore Museum which is located on one of the village’s narrow streets.
On the outskirts of the village and only 100 metres from the villa there is a lovely picnic area beneath a thicket of shady trees next to old Venetian Wells. The village square is still very much the focal point of village life. The main kafenion/taverna is a beautifully renovated stone building which is run by friendly residents. There are excellent tavernas within walking distance offering local dishes at reasonable prices. In the village you may also find two mini markets, a café and a bakery.
The lovely coastal village of Almyrida is only 4 minutes by car from the villa and is built around a pretty crescent shaped sandy beach with a small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children. Lining the beach are four excellent tavernas, nine café/bars, two bakeries, a wonderful jewellery shop, five mini-markets, three gift shops. Also in Almyrida there is a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans.
A few minutes by car from the villa, there is a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio, lace makers in Gavalohori, and silk makers in Kalamitsi. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 35 minutes away by car.
