The Murcia region
With over 300 sunny days a year averaging 22 degrees celcius Murcia is one of Spain's sunniest regions. The villa is situated between the Carrascoy Mountain Range near the City of Murcia and the beaches of Costa Calida or "warm coast" on the Mediterranean Sea. You can enjoy the clear waters and clean sands on the Mar Menor or "inland sea".
This area can offer a holiday for everyone. With a choice of fantastic beaches, cultural cities and monuments, shopping, golf, water sports, cycling, tennis, paddle tennis(pádel' in Spanish), markets, horse riding, eating out or eating in, exploring the local country side or just taking time to relax. It’s your holiday – you choose.
Murcia is a cosmopolitan city and one of our favourites, with its large shopping centres, markets and department stores - excellent for those who love to shop!
This city has a long history shown by its many examples of architecture and idyllic squares, streets, bridges and river walks. The Moors, Romans and Christians have all had a part to play in this city's history. It boasts some of the finest cinemas, theatres, museums, concerts, art galleries & exhibitions. Murcia is a wonderful setting to discover the many bars and restaurants hidden in idyllic squares where you can sit and pass the time of day whilst enjoying the fabulous Murcian cuisine in the centre of a real Spanish city.
The port of Cartagena is well worth a visit with its narrow winding streets housing shops, cafes and restaurants. The harbour offers a beautiful place to sit and relax in the port area in one of the many bars and restaurants, however it is well worth the more adventurous following the coast line to find those little cafes and restaurants hidden from the main tourist route.
The children really enjoy the water park (Terra Aqua Murcia) and animal park (Terra Natura Murcia) in Murcia, just 15 minutes drive away, or the beaches. The Mar Menor is very calm and 5 degrees warmer than the Mediterrranean , it is absolutly fantastic for small children and a great place to experience the Spanish way of life. If you would like to enjoy beaches with a bit more wave and excitement it is worth travelling up the coast, where the waves can be quite fierce.
Walking and mountain biking is a must for those who wish to explore the El Valle Natural Park and Carrascoy Mountains.
For those wishing to travel further afield, two of our favourite places are approximately two hours drive north to the Fonts Agua in Calossa and Guadalest. The water falls are not only beautiful but a great place to cool down and for the brave there is a diving board into one of the main pools or swim through the rocks to sit under the main flow. A definite must for those who want to experience the vibrance of the fresh water and those who want to watch. We tend to drive straight to GUADALEST which is an amazing hillside town, experience spectacular views, enjoy the cafes, shopping and sightseeing. A fantastic day out.
There is a whole heap of other exciting things to do and visit - we have made up a folder in the villa for you to refer to - remember if you want an active holiday look at it early in your holiday - if you prefer to look up the local restaurants and relax around the villa and resort then that's okay too.

FESTIVALS IN THE MURCIAN REGION
Murcia Spring Festival
when: April (annual)
where: Murcia
cost: Free
The spring celebrations blossom in Murcia very soon after Easter. The city is awash with colour and sounds as thousands of locals, dressed in embroidered regional costume, partake in the parades and parties of the Murcia Spring Festival.
Look out for the Bando de la Huerta on the Tuesday, when a grand procession of music groups, dance troupes and giant costumed characters winds through the streets. The parade's highlight has to be the travelling food carts - gather round as typical Murcian goodies of blood sausage, fruit, vegetables and wine are distributed among the crowds.
The following Saturday sees the bizarre burial of the sardine, where locals mourn the end of the carnival celebrations. Murcia's version of this nationwide custom involves an elaborate parade with a huge paper sardine and colourful floats, which distribute toys into the crowd. When the fish arrives at the Puente Viejo (Old Bridge), it is set on fire and a huge fireworks display marks the end of the festival.
Carthaginians & Romans Festival
when: September (annually)
where: Cartagena
cost: Free
The Murcian city of Cartagena presents the ten-day Carthaginians & Romans Festival. The event remembers the city's rich history with battle re-enactments, marches, a wedding, a circus and fireworks.
The festival traditionally opens with the lighting of a sacred fire and the inauguration of the Festival Camp beside the Estadio Municipal. On the final day, the fire is extinguished and a big fireworks display takes place.

Festival of the Holy Cross
when: May (annually)
where: Caravaca de la Cruz
Caravaca de la Cruz celebrates the Festival of the Holy Cross with the town's infamous race of the "Wine Horses" (caballos de vino). Riderless horses, wearing beautifully embroidered coats, race from the bottom of the town up to the castle.
The horse race takes place on the second day of the five-day fiesta. The caballos are led by a porter on each side, who must run as fast as their legs can carry them, while people line the route and cheer on the competitors. The only wine you are likely to come across, just in case you were wondering, is at Mass earlier in the day.
The tradition dates back to around 1250, when templar knights raced across territory ruled by the Moors to bring wine to those that guarded the relic of the True Cross (Vera Cruz), kept there since 1231.
During the rest of the five-day festival, locals celebrate at special church services, processions and historical re-enactments of the Moors and Christians throughout the town.

We had a wonderful time at casa Mendes. We wanted a quiet holiday where we could relax and we certainly did that. The villa is five star luxury. The clean pool was enjoyed by all especially my two daughters. Even the one year old was paddling at the more shallow end. We enjoyed lots of al fresco dining using the superb bbq areas and there was plenty of shade at all times. The resort is immaculate and my husband particularly enjoyed the golf. The villa is extremely well equipped and we found everything that we could want. We cannot rate Lionel highly enough for the help he gave us both before and after our holiday. We will recommend Casa Mendes to everyone. |

The villa is in a quiet residential street, it is very well maintained and the garden and pool are in excellent condition. There was plenty of outdoor space for the children to play on and for us to relax. BBQ was also provided and even umbrella's for the beach. The interior was also in excellent condition, tastefully decorated and everything you needed was provided. There were plenty of glasses, dishes and even plastic ones for the children, it has been well looked after and thoughtfully stocked. There is a selection of DVDs, games and books, the children were delighted. There was also wi-fi you just buy a card at shop. There was plenty channels to watch also. It was spotless when we arrived and we even were offered change of beds after 1 week. Washing machine and outdoor dryer were really handy to have too. |
