Home description
A stroll early in the morning around Kassiopi’s pretty horseshoe harbour is sheer bliss in the summer, walking when the day is at it's coolest and watching the sunrise over Albania seeing the thousands of young fish swim in and out of the brightly coloured bobbing boats or walking up to the ruins of the castle, you could almost believe time has stood still for this beautiful Mediterranean village.
As well as historic sites and pretty scenery Kassiopi also tempts visitors with excellent swimming in crystal blue waters from pebble coves that surround the village.
The countryside and mountains around the village make for excellent walking and the views are absolutely breathtaking.

The Ionian Islands region
The name Kassiopi, legend has it, comes from the god Kassios Zeus worshipped by the Phaeceans who settled the island in 2000BC. Zeus was the protector of land and its borders, “Kassi” means frontier and “opia” as in the medical word myopi means sight, therefore Kassiopi loosely translated means a vantage point or lookout.
Kassiopi's religion, as in most of Greece, is Greek Orthodox and the village church of Our Lady Of Kassiopi is full of myth and folklore. Legend has it that a man wrongly accused of theft in the sixteenth century had his eyes removed as punishment, blinded he took refuge in the church where he dreamt he was touched by the hands of god, when he awoke his sight had been restored.
Kassiopi has a wealth of history and was once a township rivalling Corfu town itself. A thriving centre between 227BC and 336AD the Romans used Kassiopi as an important naval outpost, it had its own coinage and temples. The ruins of the castle built in the fourth century looms over the harbour
Corfu / Kassiopi area
Local festivals take place on 8th May + 15th August in celebration of the local church which is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Originally the site of a pagan temple.
Towering above the harbour of Kassiopi is an old Byzantine fortress rumoured to have been built on the site of the holiday villa of Nero, the Roman Emperor.
The village has a playground, sailing school, water sports and tennis.
