Apartment | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 5
A stroll early in the morning around Kassiopi’s pretty horseshoe harbour is sheer bliss in the summer, walking when the day is at it's coolest and watching the sunrise over Albania seeing the thousands of young fish swim in and out of the brightly coloured bobbing boats or walking up to the ruins of the castle, you could almost believe time has stood still for this beautiful Mediterranean village.
As well as historic sites and pretty scenery Kassiopi also tempts visitors with excellent swimming in crystal blue waters from pebble coves that surround the village.
The countryside and mountains around the village make for excellent walking and the views are absolutely breathtaking.

The Ionian Islands region
The name Kassiopi, legend has it, comes from the god Kassios Zeus worshipped by the Phaeceans who settled the island in 2000BC. Zeus was the protector of land and its borders, “Kassi” means frontier and “opia” as in the medical word myopi means sight, therefore Kassiopi loosely translated means a vantage point or lookout.
Kassiopi's religion, as in most of Greece, is Greek Orthodox and the village church of Our Lady Of Kassiopi is full of myth and folklore. Legend has it that a man wrongly accused of theft in the sixteenth century had his eyes removed as punishment, blinded he took refuge in the church where he dreamt he was touched by the hands of god, when he awoke his sight had been restored.
Kassiopi has a wealth of history and was once a township rivalling Corfu town itself. A thriving centre between 227BC and 336AD the Romans used Kassiopi as an important naval outpost, it had its own coinage and temples. The ruins of the castle built in the fourth century looms over the harbour
Local festivals take place on 8th May + 15th August in celebration of the local church which is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Originally the site of a pagan temple.
Towering above the harbour of Kassiopi is an old Byzantine fortress rumoured to have been built on the site of the holiday villa of Nero, the Roman Emperor.
The village has a playground, sailing school, water sports and tennis.

Travelling abroad as a carer for a disabled friend can sometimes be a daunting experience but our stay at the Manessis Apartments in Kassiopi made it a trouble and stress-free experience.
From the moment of our arrival we were made to feel like friends who had arrived for a visit, rather than paying guests. Nothing - absolutely nothing - was too much trouble for Diana, the apartment owner/manager. There was a (free!) welcome pack of groceries (bread, milk, tea, coffee, butter etc) waiting for us, plus several varieties of Diana's homemade jams and a homemade Greek style bread and butter pudding which was totally delicious!
We had a ground floor apartment with two large, light and airy bedrooms, both of which opened onto a shady private terrace, with access to a tree shaded garden and from there directly onto the harbour side. A spacious kitchen and a newly fitted shower room were sited behind the bedrooms. There isn't a lounge as such but with such an inviting private terrace, who needs one?
Diana was most concerned for our comfort, even to the extent of phoning a music bar on the other side of the harbour which was (illegally) playing music into the small hours to complain that they might be annoying her guests, although with the double glazed windows closed and the air-conditioning and/or ceiling fans on I didn't actually hear anything at all from outside and slept like a log every night. We tended to go out fairly early each day and get back in the early afternoon, thereby avoiding being out in the car at the hottest time of day. On the first full day, I had settled Sarah (my friend) comfortably on a sun-lounger in the garden whilst I went for a swim at one of the nearby beaches. Whilst I was away, Sarah mentioned to Diana that she was fond of a gin and tonic in the afternoon and so I discovered that a gin and tonic of almost Biblical proportions was on the table beside her when I got back - as there was every afternoon for the rest of the week!
The location of the apartments simply could not be bettered. Right on the harbourside and a couple of minutes stroll from the shops and other amenities. Because of my friend's disabilities, a hire car was a must for us. Parking in many places on Corfu is difficult to say the least, but at the apartments I was able to park the hire car on the private drive, enabling level access to the apartment entrance - important for wheelchair users.
We visited a number of places on Corfu during our week - most of them very attractive indeed - but we were always glad to be back in Kassiopi. It felt like coming home each day and when we left at the end of the stay it was really quite upsetting. I have no hesitation in recommending the apartments to anyone looking for an ideal place to stay on Corfu - and Sarah and I will most certainly be going back as soon as possible!
