The Crete region
Crete is an island with an exquisite 1,000 kilometre-long coastline dotted with numerous coves, bays and peninsulas, which afford a multitude of soft, sandy beaches along the beautifully blue Mediterranean Sea. After all, it's among the finest in the world and has established Crete as one of Europe's most popular holiday destinations. And, of course, the island's historic importance in today's world as the home of the Minoan civilization with important archeological finds at Knossos, Phaistos and Gortys, is evidenced by the tens of thousands of visitors to these sites each year.
However, Crete is the largest island in Greece - the fifth largest in the Mediterranean - and, within its diverse area of more than 8,000 square kilometres, there are many other jewels just waiting to be discovered by the more adventurous explorers of holiday treasures.
Chania / Platanias area
The city of Chania lies at the east end of the Gulf of Chania , a wide embayment between the Akrotiri peninsula in the east and the Spatha peninsula (also called Rodopos) in the west. It covers a significant part of the small Plain of Chania and borders with the hilly suburbs of Profitis Ilias, Agios Mattheos and Kounoupidiana towards the east, with the villages of Vamvakopoulo, Nerokourou, Mournies and Perivolia towards the south and with the coastal areas of Chryssi Akti and Agioi Apostoloi towards the west.
The city enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate , with sunny dry summers and mild rainy winters. During the period between April and October, clear-sky weather is almost an everyday feature. The atmosphere is always warm, but fierce heatwaves (temperatures above 38 C) are not very common, since the prevailing Etesian winds ("Meltemia") blow from northern directions and pleasantly moderate the conditions. Intervals of sunny days are frequent during the windy and rainy winter as well.
How to get there
Chania Airport is the nearest to Aghia-Marina about 40 minutes' drive, while Heraklion Airport is 2 hours away.
We would recommend Chania for convenience.
From the UK there are many options: Charter flight direct to Chania on Tuesdays, booked through Airflights.co.uk ( 0800 083 7007) , First Choice ( 0870 850 3999) , Freedom Flights ( 0870 163 3000) Avro (0870 458 2841).
